I married an illegal immigrant - AMA

I married a man who entered the UK as an illegal immigrant. After 5 years of relationship and two years of living together, we applied for his visa on grounds that he is my ‘durable life partner’ (this was while EU law was still applicable in the UK, I’m a EU citizen with settlement status). We went via an immigration lawyer and were upfront about the fact that he entered the UK illegally (not that this could have been concealed anyway). The application was successful and he was granted pre-settled status. We then got married a couple of years later and had a child.

I will answer any questions, but might not engage in wider discussions about illegal immigration, there are enough threads about that topic and this is an AMA.

Doesn’t anyone else find the idea that having no clue who a person really is ( if they are using false documents, and are in a country without the knowledge of the legal authorities) just a bit worrying? Isn’t that what used to be called the Fifth Column?

Theres more to worry about than tax avoidance and service use IMHO

I think many of us have highlighted this already, though? It means that companies like the one that hired OP’s DH knowing he was using fake documents are putting the community, their staff and clients at risk as they have no idea who these people are and cannot run criminal background checks on them. It’s an horrendous thought that people coming into your home are not who they say they are and have not been vetted. It’s just another layer of criminality on top of the tax evasion and fraud.

The construction company my boyfriend would for employs workers from all of the world, but none of it is cash in hand, and I assume if they’re foreign the relevant documents are in place so they can work legally. Not a huge company, small to medium. I’ve also worked in the past for a subsidiary of Laing, same process.

why would you assume that when you've been told he was working ILLEGALLY using someone else's ID.

Appreciate that and that most companies don’t break this rule - but OP expressly stated that he was employed by a company that knew he was using a relative’s [ie fake] ID, and if they were happy to do so for him, they would have done so for others.

I meant for the foreign workers at my boyfriend’s company.

Yep that’s illegal and dishonest. Says more about the company though really.

This mass immigration crisis is the only conspiracy theory I have ever believed in but each passing day makes me believe there is something going on. All across the West - not just here.

The only thing 'going on' is poverty and climate change plus access to transport that isn't feet. The so called Great Replacement Theory is racist drivel propagated by bad actors who want to be in charge and spread lies to get there.

Drippingfeed · 26/03/2026 18:11

Eta for those attempting to claim that we are the easiest or most welcoming country and anyone suggesting otherwise is ' a troll"

They have read the stats. The UK has taken fewer refugees/ immigrants than a number of other European states

So sorry for the inconvenient facts when your minds are already made up...

The Immigrant Population in the European Union

Summary The share of foreign-born individuals in EU countries has increased from 13.6% in 2023 to 14.1% in 2024. After peaking at 6.2 million in 2022, migrant inflows dropped to 4 million in 2023, with 77% coming from non-EU countries. Ge...

But the UK has a much higher population density than for instance, France.
