didmt you say you didn’t like or enjoy the corporate world when you were in it but then later on you mentioned you worked as hospital admin.

I wouldn’t class hospital admin as corporate!

I think it means - and I would agree - that the trappings of wealth associated with a £600k salary are not noteworthy.

The difference in experiences of someone earning 60k and 600k are not huge, if you’ve got DC you’re not regularly flying business on your own cash, let alone flying private. You’re still doing a week in centreparcs at half term. Your week skiing might cost 12k, but your getting a fairly mid range experience, probably in Austria not France. School fees for three kids are likely a stretch as is buying a new car outright.

I’m not denigrating that experience but it’s not what most people would think of when they think about how the rich live.

I don't think it's true that the differences of someone earning 60 versus 600k are not huge. We're talking about combined salary here, would a couple with a combined salary of £60k really be able to afford centre parks at half term plus skiing? If you're on a combined salary of £60k I don't think you'd be sending kids to private school either. With three kids and a mortgage, I don't think a combined salary of £60k would give you much extra for holidays, eating out luxuries at all.

Even if the difference is being able to send three kids to private school and afford an annual skiing holiday, I think that's a very significant difference.

You make it sound like the OP achieves nothing. I know it’s very unfashionable but perhaps she has supported her husband and this has allowed his career to flourish. She has also raised her children in a home that is stable, having thought through choices in education, looking to give her children the opportunity to flourish. How dare you belittle all of this.
Woul you respect her more if she had had some career that involved her being remote from her husband and kids but earning a huge salary?

It amazes me that you have picked my post, amid all the incredibly bitchy, snide posts in this thread, to chastise me for belittling the OP!? I don’t say anything belittling. I asked an open question and expressed that in many ways I would love to live this life. And my question about stasis is based on what she herself has said. I don’t say stasis is bad, but she has not mentioned sharing in Driving towards goals with her husband. Even her philanthropy is a day to day one off decision on donations. Gardening is largely about maintaining, growing slowly etc… she has said she is a homebody…. So there are many things that suggest an inner peace and a lack of ‘drive towards other things’… this drive is something that is exhausting and I think is often too much a part of modern life. It is not a judgement. Certainly not a belittling. My question is a genuinely open one - once you remove the imperative of working to survive… what happens to the inner engine that many of us are slave to? Sorry if my question hit some sensitivity for you though.

OP better put her universal credit claim in! She’s positively pauper levels!

It is not like me to be motivated to respond harshly (or even at all) to an empty thread but gosh - you’ve all that wealth, and time, don’t give to charity, don’t volunteer, don’t have any interesting hobbies, spend lots of time cleaning, even your holiday home is somewhere boring. I’m baffled!

Do you think you’ve made any kind of positive contribution to this world? Have you personally achieved anything?

She has two sons.

You're not rich. Your husband is. Stop boasting about nothing.

They are a family, who are rich. What is it with this place that people find normal relationships weird or something to slag off?

And yet here you are, still feeling like you must get your 2p in.

paloma7 · 07/03/2026 10:34

I think Lincolnshire is probably among the areas with the lowest house prices in the UK? So £2m would get you a lot more for your money than in the SE or London. Lincolnshire also had one of highest Brexit votes - people in places like Boston were particularly threatened by 'immigrants taking our jobs' yadda yadda yadda because a large factor in the economy around there is food processing etc - aka jobs British people don't want to do. Hence high unemployment, exacerbated by lack of investment in this area. So I can see how if you have a bit of money round there, you would indeed feel especially loaded and 'different.' Whereas in many parts of London, you would have a very different perception of 'rich.' It's all relative and this thread really highlights the inequalities that persist across the U.K.

Re my question about shopping in Selfridges ( because I love going to the Oxford street one and seeing the designers in real life). I'm looking for a Mulberry bag as come into some money that was for a stressful reason, it's set aside to blow. Getting a designer "thing" is a experience.

I love looking at the Hermes, Tiffany, Steif bears etc. It's a nice experience out of the ordinary. Is getting a new Chanel bag like ordering online from Next? Or does it still feel like a treat?

I don't think I will ever buy the Mulberry bag. It seems to be about the "searching for it" I have been to three Mulberry shops and bought nothing which has been nice too. Excuse my spelling

Why not get a vegan bag - eg. Stella Mcartney? All that money and nonsense for what is essentially a dead cow. If you really must get a leather designer bag, why not get a second hand one already in circulation? There are so many in great condition - people have them sat in their wardrobes for years, never used.

It’s true, though. I noted her saying she hadn’t enjoyed the corporate world, thought ‘Fair enough’ and then saw her saying she’d worked in hospital admin, which is about as far from the corporate world as you can get. It seems a very slight basis to dismiss the entire professional world outside the home on, especially when the OP is in the fortunate position of having the money and leisure to train for any form of meaningful work.
