You can obviously find street after street in West London where semi-detached houses cost £2m (in fact, good luck finding a non-derelict semi in Chiswick for that) - but it doesn't mean that the people buying them are "normal", average earners!! It means that the abnormally high earners are concentrated in the same desirable postcodes. I have to be honest, it's slightly painful to have to explain this!

Normal and average is not the same thing at all. It’s rather painful to have to explain that. As I said “normal” depends on definition. Generally it means usual or typical. A normal, typical house in Chiswick costs what is normal for the area. It’s just not normal for the country.

Newyearawaits · 06/03/2026 23:57

How lovely OP, you describe a lovely life that has you have built together.
Probably appreciated more as you aren't from wealthy backgrounds.
Sounds luxurious.
As someone who has experienced poverty in the past ( no money for nappies /food /gas meter etc), I truly appreciate that I no longer have to struggle financially. I certainly am not wealthy but consider myself to be comfortable financially. A million miles away from your wealth.
I am very independent (influenced by single parenthood) and am very proud that I have worked for everything I have. The thought of having to depend on my husband /partner for financial support and to fund my lifestyle is something that I would never feel comfortable with.
Your lifestyle is a very privileged one, filled with material richness, good for you.
Do you ever feel uncomfortable with the fact that it comes courtesy of your husband?

DisconnectedDrainpipe · 06/03/2026 23:57

Do you have an indoor pool? I do plus a sauna and jacuzzi/ hot tub.
Villa in Canaries outdoor pool.
But still to me I'm not rich rich.. I'm lucky l don't have to worry about money.. for myself or my family..

Iho · 06/03/2026 15:50

That's interesting. What would you class as rich?

In all honesty, I wouldn't have said 'rich' either, but you're obviously extremely financially comfortable.

We have a somewhat comparable life, minus the cars (one car family) and second home in the South of France rather than IOW. DH doesn't now earn at that level, as we've downsized, and I run a small creative business. However, even at the height of our earning power - which was similar to your DP - I didn't think that we were 'rich.' I don't think I've ever even thought about it like that.

The word 'housewife' though? I can't believe anyone would choose to use that word in 2026!

But this isn’t an area-specific discussion. It’s not “I’m a Chiswick-based rich housewife, but of average means for my postcode AMA”. This is all about the OP being in the “abnormal” situation of being of “above average” means - nationally. She is the 0.5%, and the fact other people also exist within that 0.5% isn’t really relevant.

Capricornandproud · 07/03/2026 00:04

Good on you both OP - and fuck the begrudgers! You sound grounded and straight forward, and I would love your life. I’ve just paid off £8k of arrears and struggling to find the last £1000 - you are so so right. Money doesn’t buy you happiness but it removes SO MUCH stress. I feel like I’ve worked from the age of 16 and always had to worry about money.

Enjoy every second and every penny!

PrinceYakimov · 07/03/2026 00:04

How did you get into sailing? Do you stick to the Solent or do you cruise farther afield? Do you hire a skipper?

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 07/03/2026 00:07

Do you feel in any way vulnerable?

Oohd · 07/03/2026 00:08

My husband has a boat over on IOW and worked for property developer locally 😉

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 07/03/2026 00:09

Most important question for anyone wealthy

Do you give your kids whatever they want or do they weekly pocket money they have to budget that’s in line with being ‘a regular kid’

When your kids get to 15/16 will you insist they get a part time job that becomes their ‘pocket money’ as now they are young adults and needs to start making own way /learning value of money etc

Im working class from
nothing but minted now ( Im ‘self made rich’ as it were not DH ) but I will be damned if the kids get it on a plate by virtue of their birth to us at a different point in life than how we were born, They have wonderful lives but I’ll be buggered that they get more in hand as teens pet out putting some graft in themselves

It is an area specific discussion - specific to Lincolnshire. OP views herself in the context of her Lincolnshire bubble. Living in SE she might see herself differently.

The thread is not “I’m a housewife of above average means’” she specifically said she as rich, which, again depends on definition.

Oohd · 07/03/2026 00:11

Nothing to tell,he is over on IOW working on his boat .

Mumofteentwins · 07/03/2026 00:17

God the number of people who don’t read the thread before posting.

The OP has said multiple times she loves him. She’s said she doesn’t do regular charity donations but donates to go fund mes and helps out her family. And people asking the same thing.

I’d like to know - aren’t you afraid of being recognised on here? There are so many revealing details that I’m starting to think this isn’t real, or maybe you just don’t care? The salary as a property developer doesnt ring true to me either, as PP said you’re much more likely to take the money in a different way.

It is not perfectly normal to own a house worth 3m. Only 2.2% of houses in the entire GB are worth £1m or more. You have to be earning a well above average wage in order to even qualify for a mortgage, regardless of deposit. I'm not saying the house doesn't look like a perfectly normal house, but don't pretend they aren't privileged to afford it.

Well of course they earn well above the average wage, sure the average wage in the UK is a pittance! Yes they're both in the top 1% of UK earners, but many normal people are. It's only £180K pre-tax to make the top 1%, which really isn't massive in this day and age. Of course, it's a hell of a lot more than average, but average earners aren't going to be able to afford the expensive properties.

I disagree, my BIL/SIL work very hard, they are no more privileged than many other folk. They've just always been sensible, worked hard, knuckled down. They are perfectly normal people who earn very well (in my opinion, but not rich or wealthy). They haven't come from any privilege either.

thecomedyofterrors · 07/03/2026 00:31

Do you give generously to charity?

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 07/03/2026 00:36

BillieWiper · 06/03/2026 23:17

I'm sure it's cute but I'd be much more likely to go for Spain or South of France if Greece or something for a second home. Or in a seaside in UK a bit less logistically difficult to get to.

I imagine for the sailing.

I love that some people don't consider this person rich!

I know it’s ridiculous. Someone said they only considered hundreds of millions as rich, well fingers crossed Posh Spice will be along in a minute and we can all ask her anything. Although her house is only worth about 75 mil, so that poster probably considers her skint too.

And the person that said ‘a girl in my office has a Mercedes’ is just being ignorant. There’s a big difference between a £30k A Class and a £200k G wagon. And many of us can spot the difference.

BeanQuisine · 07/03/2026 00:51

Do you try knickers on in shops?

Moveoverdarlin · 07/03/2026 01:03

Fookin ‘ell, there’s some bitches out tonight. You sound lovely OP. How old are you?

We could afford to fly on private jets. We don't.
As in direct debits? No.
Nice food. The house. Plants. I like shoes and bags.
No. I don't really have a jewellery collection. I have my engagement ring, wedding band, eternity ring, a nice bracelet and necklace and some diamond earrings. Maybe worth £150k.
No, I'm size a size 12 brunette. I am white.
I don't feel a power imbalance.

We could afford to fly on private jets. We don't.

I don't know anyone at your level who feels they can afford to fly private. A London-NY round trip would cost over 1/6 of your annual income and that's at the lower end of pricing.

ultracynic · 07/03/2026 01:50

Do you socialise together much with your mates / his mates and their partners? Have friendship groups merged despite mixing in different circles?

Interesting AMA, like many people I dream about quitting work!
