@Iho Does your husband feel a sense on purpose in his work?

Yes, I would say so.

Do you have any unfulfilled dreams?

No. One of biggest dreams was to be able to look after my mum and dad in old age and I have been able to do that.

Yes, the hostility is sad but a lot of people are struggling and feel hopeless

It's a tough time for a lot of people 😞

Did you want more kids?

No. They are teens, one is an adult.

My DH earns this but we're not as wealthy as you as his salary has only gotten this high in the last couple of years. I still work- partly because I love my career but partly because I don't want him to resent it if I'm sitting around while he's working hard. Not that he would but i worry about that. Do you think you do your own cleaning because you need to show you're busy? Sorry if this sounds rude, I can't think of a better way to ask it!

Buttercream101 · 06/03/2026 22:04

I'm sorry OP but I think it's awful you don't give anything to charity.

I'm on a decent salary (high earner) and I've probably got 4 or 5 direct debits now. I've always given regularly to charities as soon as I earnt a comfortable amount.

From what you've told us you care about your animals. So why don't you support an animal charity? If you like sailing you could think about RNLI or how about IOW air ambulance.
You say you know what it's like to be poor so why not donate to the local food bank or homeless charity? Rather than random people why not donate money towards cancer research.

It blows my mind that your husband earns £600k and you've not even set up £10 pm to Battersea dogs home.

TheMorgenmuffel · 06/03/2026 22:05

Im very very poor. Can I have some money?

But seriously, do people you vaguely know hint or ask you for money? Has being wealthy now affected long term friendships?

Iho · 06/03/2026 22:05

FusionChefGeoff · 06/03/2026 20:43

What’s the fist thing you’d cut back on if you had to start spending less?

Whats the last thing you’d cut??

Probably shorter holidays.

Funding uni for the kids.

But you’re not a rich housewife. You’ve just got a rich husband who supports you with his money. So really you’re just a housewife. Not a rich one.

So all the money her husband earns is his? That’s not what marriage is about.

champagnetrial · 06/03/2026 22:08

You mean 170k in your current account? Because you presumably have an investment portfolio also to consider yourself 'rich'?

In which case, my question is, are you worried about the value of your investments now that Trump is intent on bombing everything (and oil is currently 1.35 a litre whereas this time last month it was 58p.)

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 06/03/2026 22:12

goz · 06/03/2026 21:47

Oh come on. 1.2million a year apparently and 1% of your income on a two week holiday is too much, get a grip.

It wouldn't be too much for us to spend - as in, clearly we could afford to - we just genuinely don't want to. We probably will when they're older, but right now, our kids are quite young, and we have a really lovely time doing what we're doing. I don't feel comfortable in "rich" places. It's probably the same reason my one designer handbag has sat unused in a dust bag for 20 years!

Also - I realise this is contradictory, but although I want to provide for our kids, I also don't want them to feel "wealth trapped". I know some people who do jobs they really don't enjoy and probably wouldn't have chosen, because they grew up with a very high standard of living - ski holidays and 5* trips to Barbados - so anything else felt like a downgrade. They felt their career options were limited to ultra high-earning professions like finance and law to keep up the lifestyle their parents had got them accustomed to. You need to be able to enjoy a rainy week in a lodge or a caravan - it's a life skill!

I have a grip - a grip on my finances! We should be able to retire by our early 50s - which for our generation is virtually unheard of. Then we'll have more time to travel. I won't be doing it in a pair of Louboutins - but that's OK.

Love these!

What animals do you have?
Have you had any cosmetic surgery?
What model Mercs do you drive?
If asked, would you help out at dh company?
Favourite shoes?
Do you ever buy own brand products or are they branded?
Do you always have a full tank of fuel?

Thanks!

An Irish Wolfhound. A tropical aquarium as I find them so relaxing to watch. We keep chickens. I'd love a goat but they eat everything in sight.

I have botox. I've never had surgery.

A G Class and S Class.

It has to be Louboutin.

I tend to buy branded, but I always have.

I like to keep the tank above 60 miles.

I think your patience in the face of hostility has been very classy OP.
Your lifestyle sounds lovely and it’s great that it works so well for your family and you are able to help other people you care about.
Please can you tell me about your pets?

How much did you pay for your Oyster? Were you and DP into sailing before becoming rich?

£220k. We both love the sea but sailing wasn't something we could really get into before having the funds.

These details are getting very specific and outing. How many people in Lincolnshire live in an 8 bed Victorian manor with a property developer husband, 2 adult sons, one doing maths at a top uni, used to do admin at a hospital, size 12 brunette, with these specific pets and cars. Anyone who stumbles across this and knows you will know exactly who you are. I'm wobbling on this thread now.

Goats are amazing pets but don’t get a single one as they are herd animals. 3 Pygmy goats at least.

Op - can you answer my questions please - I'm so nosey!

Sorry which one was it?

OP posts:
ShakeNCake · 06/03/2026 22:27

OP I think you're handling this thread very well. Obviously lots of people are struggling financially and so this kind of post can feel hurtful, but I appreciate your measured responses.

My question would be, if you are in some ways already living a retired lifestyle, do you see yourself doing this for the rest of your life?

I notice gardening is a passion and you have a gardener, but you don't say cleaning is a passion and yet yoy don't have a cleaner. Why did you do it that way round?

And do you have any big dreams that wealth has or will let you achieve?

Iho · 06/03/2026 22:27

JLou08 · 06/03/2026 21:36

Are you bothered by the negative comments on here OP?
I pity the people that make them. Ironic that some think a rich person would have something better to do than post on MN. You don't need money to find something more enjoyable than social media, yet here we all are.
I imagine those saying that you aren't that rich are actually poor themselves and their jealousy is leading to them trying to put you down. Which seems ridiculous, it sounds like you're living your best life and enjoying not having to worry about money.
I'm surprised at how many people think a career is needed to feel fulfilled, does that surprise you? Do you think some of them are lying to themselves to help them cope with being tied into working for a living?

I'm not bothered at all.
Yes and yes.

You've answered the first batch but me and another person wondered why you don't donate to charities - not a criticism just wondering as it's one of the first things I'd do if I was in a position of having tens of thousands excess cash each month.
