It wouldn't be too much for us to spend - as in, clearly we could afford to - we just genuinely don't want to. We probably will when they're older, but right now, our kids are quite young, and we have a really lovely time doing what we're doing. I don't feel comfortable in "rich" places. It's probably the same reason my one designer handbag has sat unused in a dust bag for 20 years!
Also - I realise this is contradictory, but although I want to provide for our kids, I also don't want them to feel "wealth trapped". I know some people who do jobs they really don't enjoy and probably wouldn't have chosen, because they grew up with a very high standard of living - ski holidays and 5* trips to Barbados - so anything else felt like a downgrade. They felt their career options were limited to ultra high-earning professions like finance and law to keep up the lifestyle their parents had got them accustomed to. You need to be able to enjoy a rainy week in a lodge or a caravan - it's a life skill!
I have a grip - a grip on my finances! We should be able to retire by our early 50s - which for our generation is virtually unheard of. Then we'll have more time to travel. I won't be doing it in a pair of Louboutins - but that's OK.
