What do you feel are the biggest cultural differences between your upbringing in Poland and that of British culture? I know you say you wish you could move back, but is there anything you LIKE about the UK? (Asking as a S African born immigrant raised/adopted into a British Asian household!)

Sorry don't want to hijack your thread @RealReginaPhalange but one thing did make me laugh, kind of! My host family put a bottle of red wine on the table for our first breakfast and offered me a glass. I obviously refused because it was 8am and when I politely questioned it, was told that they thought Brits drank alcohol all day!! Is this a common misconception about us?

Oh no not at all! Its usually what they say about us, we like to drink

Nope, i think english houses can be very clean (used to be a cleaner 17yrs ago here!)

i think people are waaaay to strict here with kids and not helping young adults as much as we do in poland (obviously its not always the case)

besides dentist services, polish and english nhs is pretty much the same

i forgot about my latest discovery- CRUMPETS, love them, never had them until the few days ago. We dont have them in poland

Thank you for answering. Really interesting thread!

Yes crumpets are very English! Oddly one of the few foods I can't stand.

I asked the question about health services as the builder who renovated our house is Polish and lives here, but his wife went back to Poland to give birth. I didn't want to ask why (might have been language barrier as she was still learning English).

That is so funny. My son's partner is Turkish (not a practising Muslim and does drink alcohol socially) but she was appalled to find out people serve alcohol after funerals here. I had never given it a thought.

Might have been to have her mum/sister/best friend with her. I know someone who went to their home country to give birth because she wanted her mum with her and her mum couldn't travel to her.

You know what the Nazis were doing to the Poles, right? you understand that in WW2 we were allies with Poland, right? You understand that many, many Polish people have paid into the UK treasury coffers, right? You know the UK and Poland still have close bonds, right? You understand that without our Polish population our NHS would be screwed, yes? Do you even know where Poland is on a map?!!

OP, how many languages do your children speak? And have you given your children Polish, Asian or British names?

Well yes as I went to visit various family members the 100% Polish vodka came out at any time of the day 🤣 the Polish and Brits are truly kindred spirits ❤️

Yes! I was in Poznan 4 years ago staying with a friend's family. Booked a dentist appt and it was great, got appt straight away, treatment brilliant and cost a fraction of UK prices

Bloody love Poland ❤️. The people, food, public transport, weather, architecture, houses -it's a brilliant country and Polish C&A (which we no longer have) is so much cheaper and better stocked 🤣

It puzzles me why Poles are here as I'd move to Poland in a heartbeat

Glass is always greener on the other side😃

RealReginaPhalange · 27/11/2025 19:42

@CautiousLurker2 i actually like most of the things in the UK, even the weather although i am starting to get fed up with the rain lately.

School system is completely different, free universities, different houses.

I could move back only because i wish to be able to see my family and friends more often. I still do feel home sick sometimes. Its like being inbeetwen two worlds. You dont feel you belong any more where you grew up but also you don’t exactly belong where you live, yet you have two kids who only knows life here and this is their childhood.

@honeylulu i am afraid she could also go there because she is more comfortable and not trusting system here. My cousin doesnt either, i feel completely different though. We get antibiotics and other medicine prescribed ALL the time, here you get paracetamol first if you are not well or coming down with something. You give birth you go home next day (I appreciate its not the case if you have some complications but otherwise it’s pretty standard), in poland you dont go out so quick, especially after c section it is usually a week at a hospital. I gave birth twice here and comparing to my friends in poland, cannot really complain, both places are fine. Although child benefit is much much higher in poland!

I on the other hand hate that tradition and dont drink myself 🫣 we are going to have christening soon and there wont be any alcohol…very not polish way🫣

I think Reform is misplacing their anger little bit. But when polish people talk politics it always ends in an argument so will skip this one😂

Will answer the other teo later

How many pierogi do you plan to make for Christmas?

Which place / city / town would you recommend to move to in Poland, with best opportunities getting a job as English speaker?

In all big cities you can still find few opportunities for English - native speakers ( not as many as used to be ), look at : Warszawa, Krakòw, Gdańsk, Poznań,Wrocław

Battytwatty · 27/11/2025 20:01

Hi OP. No questions for you but I just wanted to say I adore Poland. Been to many of the cities there. Food and vodka to die for.

I’ve heard Polish dentistry is better and less expensive than what we get here. Do you agree?

My grandfather who was polish used to go back to Poland to go to the dentist!
