Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

When do you clean the fridge, oven, skirting boards, inside the cupboard, window, front door under the couch and cushions etc and how often do you do those? It's things like that I can't be arsed with though the fridge gets done every couple of weeks when I've been shopping id love to just get a cleaner to do those things.

Pastaandoranges · 30/08/2025 10:18

Do you havr random stuff all over the house, my kida seem to move stuff around the house all day so everything is in its wrong place by the end of the day and their rooms are upside down. How do you either stop this happening or tidy it each day?

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 07:41

🤣🤣 I wish I was thinner, I’m 5’3 and I weigh 9.5 stone, I’m a solid size 10.

Off topic here I know, but how can you be a size ten? I’m 5 foot 8 and weigh 9 stone 3lb and I’m a size 10!
Clothes sizes are so confusing!

Tartantotty · 30/08/2025 10:18

Great, well done!

In my experience many people live in a tip, particularly here in the UK. I lived in Scandinavia (Denmark and Sweden) for many years and folk are really proud of their houses - keeping them tidy and clean and welcoming.

I wonder if laziness' has something to do with this, or just being disorganised and lacking in any pride of place.

Exactly! Good question. It’s all that kind of shite that is the hardest to keep on top of.

SErunner · 30/08/2025 10:21

I’m the same OP. Our house is always tidy, always ready for guests. And like you, I just do everything as I go along so nothing builds up. Hoover daily, mop floors every other day or sometimes daily if needed. Laundry every day and put it away as soon as it’s out (I don’t iron anything). Bathrooms thoroughly cleaned once a week but wiped down most days. Everything has a place, it goes back there as soon as I’m done using it. We have 2 children and 2 dogs. I also have realised just how tidy I am after reading that other thread!

cornbunting · 30/08/2025 07:52

Surely that's because it's they've only just gone back and it's a part-week? Not exactly sinister.

My son wears a shirt for 2 days (if clean in appearance and odour free). So 3 per week. I don't consider that sinister either 😅Same for trousers.

BackToLurk · 30/08/2025 10:27

I’m naturally messy. My son is naturally messy. My partner is tidier. What are you top tips for turning for turning my frankly grimy chaos into tidy perfection? Where do I start?

99bottlesofkombucha · 30/08/2025 10:29

I don’t know if this is my dream life or if it’s so entirely foreign to our whole family that if it was my life I wouldn’t be anything like me anymore 😂 but we have a much more chaotic schedule too, longer work hours and 3 dc who do a lot of sport, do like toys and do not like tidying…

riverofjordan · 30/08/2025 10:30

I still don't understand the laundry situation! Do you have low standards for care of clothes? I wash only whites with whites to keep them bright, some things need a 30 delicate wash, some things need a 60 wash with added treatments, some things need a soak first, and on and on. ?

MaudlinGazebo · 30/08/2025 10:32

I’m interested in this “other” thread if anyone can direct me please?

Briningitallin · 30/08/2025 10:32

I went into my neighbour’s house yesterday, was that you @Kitchenbattle .

I’m reasonably clean and tidy but how do you achieve that ‘always ready for visitors look?’

I don’t have many delicates to be honest! I do all the whites together and we have light grey towels and the darks together.

I have no idea, it’s my shape I presume. Solid size 10.

The only thing out in my kitchen is the kettle.
Everything is in the cupboards.
I don't have ornaments out.
I cleared my mother's house out when she passed and it took months, then I went back home and did the same to my house , so our son's aged 30 don't have to go through the same.I am 51.
I don't but things for the home only disposable, this is all since my mum's passing 8 years ago and feeling angry at all the tat she had kept , she hadn't even sorted my Grandmothers things or her husband's after they died.
I leave the house tidy before work and before bed , and our house is tidy incase of a rare visitor.
It took 9 months to empty my loft and double garage , I did a free to good home on everything in the garage on marketplace.
My weakness is Christmas tree's and decorations / room decorations. There were 6 trees in our loft that I had forgotten about.

Fridge gets cleaned when shopping is being put in. Oven gets cleaned after I cook something particularly “spitty” so last Sunday I cooked a roast chicken. Dp cleansed the over straight after while I cleaned the table and stacked dishwasher. I’m not the only one that cleans so that’s helpful.
inside cupboards is the same but they are not jam packed either so easy to clean.
Skirting boards I just do randomly…I will sweep, mop and wipe down usually on a Friday straight after work. WFH on Friday so that helps.
Dp will lift the couch when I hoover, never anything except dust there tbh

I thought I was the only one 😆 I clean as I go along or when something catches my eye. If I cook, I wipe down surfaces and wash and clean sink area, stove, backsplash etc..when I’m in bathroom, I’ll wipe down sink and mirror, clean toilet after I’ve used it, wipe down shower etc,.if I walk past dusty skirting board, I’ll bend down and give it a quick wipe etc. I guess as a result my house is guest-ready at any time too! Guest room bed is dressed and ready if anyone needs to stay over unexpectedly. Yes I have children (young adults now!) but the house has always been like this even before they were born when I was working full time too…oh, and I have three labradors and five cats on top of it all..

OpheliaNightingale · 30/08/2025 10:40

@Kitchenbattle Why is your kitchen a battle?

BusWankers · 30/08/2025 10:40

Imbusytodaysorry · 30/08/2025 08:40

Seriously ? Maybe her dd isn’t at the stage /age of needing to wear a new shirt every day. maybe she isn’t a messy child and also keeps it clean .

Urgh, who re wears shirts?? Kids are grubby and school is dirty.

Gross.

Just saying that flushing wipes is a no no, even ‘biodegradable’ ones from an environmental viewpoint.

I don’t flush the wipes.

I'm quite organised and also know where everything in the house is.

My undoing is all the stuff they bring home from school, brownies etc.

Do you have some sort of system for this other than it lies there long enough for them not to be upset when it goes in the recycling! I suppose a separate playroom would help.

And what about cushions? In my house they end up all over the floor constantly or the kids snuggle up with the throws. How do you avoid that because I am ready to forego all soft furnishings at this point in time 🤣

They can snuggle up on the couch and of course the cushions end up on the floor…I just tell them to pick them up or I do. Once we leave the sitting room it’s tidied again.

And some people are obsessive.

For most of human history and in many parts of the world the idea of needing a clean shirt every day would be incomprehensible.

I do a wash a day, I don't have a laundry basket, clothes get left at the top of the stairs every night and then we put half a load on in the morning. We don't iron, we fold from the line or the dryer.

Do you wash everything together regardless of fabric or colour?

Yes I do! I didn't for years but fabric and dyes are different these days. I do bedding on a higher temp so that goes on separately.

BusWankers · 30/08/2025 10:48

I can't get over the fact a family of 4 only does two loads of washing a week!

That's 28 pairs of pants, 56 socks, at least half a dozen bottoms, a few bras, 20+ tops, 4+ bath towels, hand towels, tea towels, coats/hats etc, bedding, blankets/throws etc

And probably more if swimming/sports etc.

Even with a 10 kg washing machine that's still one load just for bedding and a couple of towels. So how you're cramming? All the rest into another wash is beyond me
