Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

My secret is the world’s best cleaning lady, if that helps..

OhHellolittleone · 30/08/2025 13:05

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 10:33

I don’t have many delicates to be honest! I do all the whites together and we have light grey towels and the darks together.

Low standards…! lol

I sometimes do white washes but we don’t have many whites so it feels like a waste. I bung all our stuff in together. Husband wears white T-shirts under his shirts so I don’t think they need to be dazzling. His white shirts are all done at the dry cleaners.

OP I’m like you. Our house is never too bad, laundry and cleaning doesn’t feel like too much. We do it as we go. But we do have a fortnightly cleaner who keeps us honest. She changes our beds and does more of a deep clean. We also need to make sure all is tidy before she comes.

Reanimated · 30/08/2025 07:25

I think we must have different kinds of households. Laundry isn't just a pop a load or two in on Saturday morning job here, it's a load a day or system meltdown.

We call say the laundry has reached ‘critical mass’ at this point.

BusWankers · 30/08/2025 13:11

Katrinawaves · 30/08/2025 12:34

In the dullest conversation ever…

@BusWankers Google tells me that a 10kg machine can easily handle 3 towels, an entire set of bedding, 3 pairs of jeans and 20 shirts/Tshirts plus underwear in a single load.

Can we now just assume that the OP is not a liar but just has a bigger washing machine than you do?

No it can't...not all at once!

I have a 8kg and can do a set of double bedding and maybe a towel... So there's no way an extra 2kg of room will fit and an additional 3 pairs of jeans, 20 tshirts, another towel plus underwear.

LittlleMy · 30/08/2025 13:13

@Kitchenbattle i know you said, you’d love to make this a career but don’t think it would pay well but maybe in the future you could consider loaning yourself out for a fee to help kickstart a good routine for people like me 😅. I’m single, no dependants and in the last two years for various reasons, my house has turned from perfectly tidy and generally okay at any moment in time to really very very bad and I just can’t get on top,of it.

I think you’d be great at a ‘no judgement just support’ troubleshooter style person to almost ‘coach’ into sustainable routines and even give advice on best cleaners etc.

I think something like this would really help galvanise me into action. I have this coming week off work specifically to get on top,of everything - second time I’ve taken a week off for this reason as the last time I just had a sort of overwhelming paralysis of being frozen into an state of anxiety every day and I just couldn’t do anything other than move one pile of mess into a different spot. Sounds very pathetic indeed as I type it all out but this has never ever happened to me before. I should add this coincided with the onset of peri, a relationship break up, recovering from a shoulder impingement and fractured metatarsal. But anyway, wish me luck for this coming week! 💪🧽🧹🧼

BusWankers · 30/08/2025 11:52

No not all....
. I just don't understand how she squeezes a weeks worth of a family of 4 washing into basically one load. She must be using a load for the bedding each week, as she does 1 set of 3 each week... So how is she doing it?

I genuinely don't understand how she's fitting it all in...

It reminds of a poster who claimed she did her (1 person) washing once a fortnight, in a normal washing machine, including towels and bedding.... Just impossible!

Edited

These are my loads today…the dark didn’t fill the machine so I could have put a load of bedding in with it. I don’t really know what else to say…

How many people in the house, and how many bedrooms?
Separate dining room, lounge, kitchen?

These are the main factors in winning

NamechangeNightNurse · 30/08/2025 13:21

Butterflyarms · 30/08/2025 12:03

In that case I am impressed and jealous. I feel I spend all my time cleaning, to the detriment of spending time with children etc, and the house is still a tip 😭

Do you think it makes a difference that everyone is all in together? Or is it the lack of junk and random sentimental possessions? What's the biggest thing?

Also, where do you hang damp towels and wash cloths? Mine are over a door to air...

The biggest thing is " One Touch"
You put things away where they belong
Coats, bag , shoes -on coat rack, cupboard/ peg/ shoe cupboard
Wrappers -bin
Cups-dishwasher

If you just chuck things down then you have created a second job of then having to tidy up and put them away then when you need to clean you have to sort all the crap out first, it's tiring and draining.

Laundry, wash, dry, put away -Do all of it on one day then you don't have washing everywhere

Damp towels go on heated towel rail
Yes regular dejunk and monitor what comes in

Brindlegirl · 30/08/2025 13:21

Money, space, storage make it easier but I know a family who live in a large house with big bedrooms, several reception rooms etc who have lots of mess.

The spacious hall is full of dumped stuff, the living-room has an ironing board up permanently and a basket of unfolded clothes to be ironed.

In the fairly new kitchen you can't see the worktops.

They could have all their stuff in one of several spare rooms (just two adults and one teenager at home) but I guess the untidiness doesn't bother them.

WithOnlyTheMemories · 30/08/2025 13:23

I'm reading this whilst psyching myself up to do the tidying 😂

I feel like I do bloody loads of housework, and we have a regular cleaner, but our house is a complete tip and never visitor-ready.

I'd like to figure out where we are going wrong but I think the key things are that DH is not tidy at all, so I'm really the one pushing everything all the time (and the kids are super messy) and secondly we have far too much stuff everywhere. I am a spendaholic so probably guilty of perpetuating that one.

Mapletree1985 · 30/08/2025 13:25

A bed unmade is not as tragic as a life unlived, as my mum used to say.

i am very much like you OP, I have a baby now so getting to grips with keeping the place clean while also letting little one be free. Have you any tips for the baby stage? I have a place for everything, I declutter regularly, I don’t stay in on the weekends to clean for hours but I clean as I go along, like to notice and do. I’m not very on top of washing, that’s my downfall.

One thing I do with washing (and these may seem overkill) is I try to plan it…if I’ve been wearing dark clothes all week, I don’t put on a white T-shirt on Friday, as I know I’m not going to be able to wash it (I’m not going to put that in on its own). My dd has just started secondary school and her shirts are white now so that theory can’t be followed any more. But I try to do that where possible.
I buy light grey towels because they can be washed with darks or whites. So I keep it as easy as possible.

for baby stage. Those caddy’s with the necessities to hand are very helpful and can sit at the side of the couch.

washing at that stage can be tedious yes but I think even though it’s not economical I would let it build up too much. I would do little and often. Wear similar colours to baby so that they can all be washed together. And go easy on yourself. ❤️

If you would like to make a career of it OP, what would you suggest for a family with similar age DC to yours, living in a three bed semi (smallest room a box), galley kitchen, no space for washer and dryer, one reception, one (very small) bathroom, light coloured carpet from previous occupants, with no money to replace yet? Budget is extremely tight so no option to throw any money at the problem.

Nevereatcardboard · 30/08/2025 13:30

Do you ever sit on the sofa for a whole weekend, scratching yourself, watching TV and dropping biscuit crumbs everywhere? I suspect this is where DH and I are going wrong and why the house is messy! 😀

OP has a 10kg washing machine which holds double an ordinary washing machine. So every load for her, is 2 loads for other people.

However, it does seem that she's economical with what she washes. I'm the same. Three in our house and I do 2 6kg loads every Saturday. Anything that doesn't fit in, waits till the following week.

4 people, 5 bedrooms…one used as an office and one used as a den/library. 2 en-suite and 1 main bathroom (that my ds uses) and a downstairs loo. Kitchen/diner, utility, sunroom, sitting room.

You don’t have toddlers or ADHD so im not interested 😆 My house is clean for a home with 2 under 5 but its CONSTANT upkeep and a lot of work. Sometimes I let it get messy, but it’s always clean. I suspect it would always be tidy if my children were the same ages as yours as my husband and I don’t create much chaos.

Saladbar · 30/08/2025 13:33

You sound rich and have a huge house also. No little kids and work full time. I’d be shocked if your home wasn’t clean and tidy? Much easier to keep bigger homes tidy as you have a place for everything. And with pre teens who would be making a mess? This post is an odd brag 😆

I’m laying on the couch right now with a cuppa. I was up and showered and out early, did a few errands and had brunch. Got home and had an unexpected visitor. (Hence why I’m only finishing the laundry now. It’s lashing here so one load is in the dryer and the other is in the machine.

don’t you ever worry about the environmental impact of all your wipes and using the dryer?

Well my kids were once smallies and I had the same standards then. It’s just how I work. I was a sahm for a good few years years too. I’m not rich. We earn well yes but I’m not loaded.

This is the second time I’ve used the dryer in about 4 weeks…i don’t understand how you expect me to dry my clothes on a wet day otherwise? The wipes I admit aren’t the most environmentally friendly but I try my best and that’s all we can do I suppose.

You dont seem to understand that having a dryer (or perhaps space for one), or even space for a 10kg washing machine, is a luxury many won't have... and its luxuries like this that mean you can keep things tidier alot more easily than other families.

I dont actually buy everything you're saying anyway.

Not whilst people are doing 12 plus washes a week!

I totally understand that everyone doesn’t have a 10kg washer. Please don’t think you know what I know or think. What are you not buying? Im claiming to have have a unicorn in my garden or anything.
