I’ve had another baby too so am now a tandem feeder. Happy to answer any questions.

I still breastfeeding my almost 6 year old, so hello from me...and well done!!! I have never tandem fed, so my question is about that...do you ever feel totally touched out?

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 05/05/2025 14:14

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why? Why not stop at 1 year or 2 etc

Thank you. Same to you. I am fortunate that I can honestly say I have never felt touched out, even when feeding the two of them together. I know some mothers do feel like this.

This is really really disturbing

Not a dumb question at all.

It wasn’t something I particularly set out to do. Things just evolved this way. My goal originally was to get to six months, then to a year then to two.

There was a time when I thought I’d need to wean to conceive again, yet it turned out that just reducing feeds was enough (although this isn’t the case for everyone). I then thought DS might wean during the pregnancy. Yet he wanted to keep going and I was happy with that, so there was no reason to stop really.

So when will you stop?

muggart · 05/05/2025 14:29

congratulations op i think that’s a brilliant effort.

my question: has he/ she ever mentioned it to their friends at school? is that a potential issue you’ve wondered about?

MarxistMags · 05/05/2025 14:30

Surely there is no need for BF after the age of 3.eg as the child is getting enough nutrients and vitamins from food. I find it odd and self indulgent to still be doing it. And a child of school age is super weird. If his class mates knew he would be teased unmercifully.

Justfreedom · 05/05/2025 14:30

Breastfeeding 5/6 year olds mental if you ask me.
The mums i know that have breastfed kids stop around 12 months or so.
But 5/6 year olds no way to far imo.
There ive said it.

There's plenty of things I wouldn't do in public but are perfectly healthy! I didn't feed my older child in public because he only fed before bed, but I imagine many don't because of perceived judgement.

My DS self-weaned just before his 5th birthday. I fed my eldest DD until she turned 3. I tandem fed for anout 3 weeks bit I think the change to the milk put DD off.

No questions to ask right now!

I suggested many times to my 4yo DS that he might prefer milk in a cup, but he was adamant he wouldn't! Feeding definitely wasn't self-indulgent!

Hercules12 · 05/05/2025 14:32

You’re very brave op to post as lots of people won’t understand as it’s not their own norm. I bf ds until he was 4 and dd until 3. Well done!

breastmilk doesn’t magically lose its nutritional value when a child reaches a certain age, just like dairy milk doesn’t stop having nutritional value at any point.

Why?
At almost 6 i think school and drinking from cups and eating from plates not being breastfed.
Or am i missing something.

SunshineAndFizz · 05/05/2025 14:35

Do his school friends know?

Haha...you've not met my child

Stunted 🤣🤣

She's bright, independent, happy, healthy.

How is doing something biologically normal (the natural weaning age can be anything up until 7ish) stunt a child?

WinterMorn · 05/05/2025 14:36

muggart · 05/05/2025 14:33

breastmilk doesn’t magically lose its nutritional value when a child reaches a certain age, just like dairy milk doesn’t stop having nutritional value at any point.

By that rationale, nobody would ever stop breastfeeding.

CorneliaCupp · 05/05/2025 14:36

Why would you do this?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/05/2025 14:37

The lastEmperor ofChina was breast fed until he was at least 8.

Didn’t end well for him.

This!!

jackstini · 05/05/2025 14:37

How often do they feed? Has starting school changed anything?

Dd self weaned around 2.6 when I was pregnant with Ds - think my milk was changing. Ds was almost 3 when he stopped - at that point it was only bedtime or if he was ill/hurt

I wonder if people don’t realise it’s usually only a 1 or 2 times a day max at that age - not like they are on you as often as a 1 year old!

Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2025 14:37

I have told DS that I will no longer BF him once his GCSE's are over
