I am a woman earning £1million a year. How do you cope with so little money?

Countrygirlxo · 22/03/2024 01:46

Good for you 👍🏼

Cabincrew1 · 22/03/2024 02:18

Is there something in the air ? All I’ve seen all day on social media is braggarts some pretending to be humble but failing miserably 😂

backatschool · 22/03/2024 03:43

A little harsh...there were lots of requests on the other (bonkers) thread asking for an AMA from high earning women (rather than households)...

Shhhhivegotasecret · 22/03/2024 11:00

Yes there is a huge difference between a mum earning £500k and being married to a high earner.
OP - do you feel like you have to make a lot of sacrifices?

TheBeesKnee · 22/03/2024 11:02

What do you like about your job?

Newsenmum · 22/03/2024 11:03

Why are there all these posts atm? Personally find it a little tone deaf. Yes you are very rich. A lot of people are struggling. I don’t really want to head about it.

Wishitsnows · 22/03/2024 11:04

Do you feel you can ever switch off even on holiday? Was your previous role on similar money or was it a big step to get your current role?

alwaysmovingforwards · 22/03/2024 11:07

Do you work senior for a company ie salary / bonuses / LTIPs or are you running your own business(es)?

OldMrsHempstock · 22/03/2024 11:15

Are your DC aware of having a lot more than others? Do you move in very wealthy circles, so it's normal to them? Do they have a luxury lifestyle or do you live more modestly?

Alljan · 22/03/2024 11:41

evidently not trying to offend anyone, just shed some light on something that there seems to be an interest in but low visibility to. To answer questions posed:

I am in a corporate role in a US tech firm so shares are a big part of my pay. I do not have the risk tolerance for self employment! I like my job a lot because I lead a great team and i get to work on hard problems.

I can switch off on hols to a certain extent, checking messages say twice a day but I try not to ‘work’ just firefight if required.

Kids are not really aware. We live in an expensive SE area thus overall standard of living is quite high. I am also trying to build up savings and pay off mortgage so if anything happened to me their futures are super secure.

have been earning this type of money for 2 years and maybe over 250k for last 6.

😂

Softycatchymonkeys · 22/03/2024 11:44

What car do you drive?
what’s your most expensive bag?
where do you shop?

Portu · 22/03/2024 11:44

When you firefight do you use a hose or an extinguisher?

Posery · 22/03/2024 11:49

Can you tell us in vague terms about your careers trajectory? Eg university degree, first job etc etc

Have you made sacrifices to get where you are? Was the job responsible for the end of your marriage?

Would you do the job if it paid less or is the money an important part of it?

Posery · 22/03/2024 11:50

And thank you for this, it’s really interesting.

Fannyfiggs · 22/03/2024 11:56

Thanks for sharing and actually answering the questions 😊

Have you always worked in tech? If not, how did you get into it.

Alljan · 22/03/2024 12:02

State educated then studied economics at a uni famous for its placement years spent working. I attribute placement to being a big springboard to being able to get an investment banking grad scheme job (which was very male and oxbridge 18 years ago). Hated that job due to hours and egos so moved after 18 months into consulting then to tech 10 years ago.

Worked long hours probably til I hit director level and then they actually reduced because you move from doing the work to being accountable for it. Now prob work 45 hours a week.

Job indirectly contributed to marriage breakdown. I was much higher earner than him and not able to put enough time into being the elegant home maker he preferred.

Job is not my vocation. The money and relatively balanced life is why I do it.

Why have you still got a mortgage? Are you quite bad with money?

Good for you. You’ve clearly worked extremely hard.

Not bad with money. Divorce was expensive as are properties here.

What's your take home pay OP? Do you feel rich?
Do you think people with huge incomes like yourself should be taxed more?

Also, do friends and family know or treat you differently /expect you to pay for things/ ask for handouts?

Mangolover123 · 22/03/2024 12:24

Good for you, great to see a women at the top of her game.
Great to see you were state educated and have taken the opportunities that have come your way to get here you are. Hard work, savviness and having the confidence or balls to take opportunities to get you to where you are today. I would like girls and young women to read your post and see it is possible.
Well done you!

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 22/03/2024 12:27

Good on you!

refreshing to see a post like this when most on MN get slated for talking about husbands salaries.

can I ask how old you are? Do you have a lot of family/ex/paid support with your children to allow for hours and travel?

darkchocolatecoffee · 22/03/2024 12:28

Thanks for the thread. Will you be educating your kids state or private? Sorry if it’s been asked upthread already.
