Just got back from my first Disney cruise. I had loads of questions and couldn’t find any answers on here before we went so thought I’d do an AMA in case anyone else wants to ask :)

Do you think it’s the kind of holiday two adults could enjoy without children?

Do you have to share a table with other guests at dinner? Is it easy to request a table for just the two of you if it’s a romantic getaway?

If you love Disney then absolutely. If you are not really Disney fans then there are better cruise lines for a romantic break.

Disneydance · 03/09/2023 07:15

@HoneyPotts there were lots of adults without children there, but they seemed to be die hard Disney fans? If you’re into Disney then definitely! If not then I wouldn’t as it’s very ‘disney’ onboard

i requested a table for just us on the app and got it. I didn’t want to sit with other people so it was my top priority

Considering cruise ships are even worse than flying in terms of carbon footprint, when you looked out to the sea did you ever get a pang of guilt?

HoneyPotts · 03/09/2023 07:47

I’m a die hard Disney fan. Don’t think DH shares my enthusiasm. I’ve noticed they do shorter 2 or 3 day sailing from Florida so that might be a compromise for us. Thanks for answering.

I never have on the 8 cruises I have been on. I go on a cruise once every 2-3 years now (used to be yearly before covid) I know people who fly off for weekend breaks and have 4 or 5 holidays a year so why should I feel guilty for having 7-14 days away every 2-3 years? A lot of cruise lines are also getting a lot better with sustainability and are making great inroads for cleaner cruising.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 03/09/2023 12:35

What sort of cabin were you in?

The logic of this is as valid as ‘I know people who fly-tip and pimp raw sewage into rivers so it doesn’t matter if I litter.’

No its all about personal responsibility. Do you never fly? Do you have a car?

We never fly, we have a green car and do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. So I don't feel guilty for going on a cruise every 2-3 years.

I can’t remember the last time I flew, and no, I don’t have a car. I’ve never had one.

I agree with these concerns.

I agree with these concerns.

Same here. I feel that we are getting to a place where people who go on cruises will start to be ostracised and that it’s going to be no longer socially acceptable. Rightly so.

Same. Though I have spoken to people who have made life long friends through shared tables. It’s just not for me though.

Redlarge · 03/09/2023 14:14

What was your favourite part

HoneyPotts · 03/09/2023 14:30

Do the characters who walk about sign autographs? Or do you have to wait in line for an autograph?

skyeisthelimit · 03/09/2023 14:35

Are there any concessions for disabilities, like at DLP where you can get the green pass which avoids queueing etc?

I keep thinking about doing a cruise from Southampton if they still do them from there.

What a load of bollocks 😂 wishful thinking I’m afraid!

Disneydance · 06/09/2023 21:00

No, I actually wasn’t aware that they were so terrible? To be honest I didn’t think about it, but if I had I would have thought flying would be worse. It’s something I’ll think about in the future though

@FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping we stayed in a veranda room, it had bunk beds for the kids and a double bed. We didn’t use the veranda as much as I expected, but it was lovely to open the doors and have the sea breeze on an evening

@Redlarge definitely the kids faces when they turned down a corridor and saw a character. At one point we went outside and Mickey and Minnie were on their way around to meet people. Luckily I had my phone in my hand because the absolute joy on their faces is a picture I’m putting on my wall!

OP posts:
Disneydance · 06/09/2023 21:07

@HoneyPotts both! The characters were always willing to sign autographs, no idea how some did it with their gloves on! But anytime you saw them they would, unless you caught them on their way somewhere and then they were polite but didn’t stop for anything!

@skyeisthelimit not that I noticed. One of my children has adhd and he hated the queues so we didn’t do many. When we did, one adult would stay online and the other would wander with the kids. There wasn’t an option to skip the queues for anyone unfortunately. And yes, as far as I know they only leave the U.K. from Southampton :)

Did you feel any sea sickness about the environmental impact, particularly the direct impact on marine life? Any chats with your kids about whales and dolphins whilst you were at it?

Also any nausea over the enormous amount of food wastage?

it’s my idea of hell to be honest… gluttons gorging themselves for days on end and can’t even be arsed to go and see the world. Utterly pointless and culturally bereft. Does nothing for the places they stop at. They just flood cities with hoards of uninterested bodies who don’t even contribute to the local economies because they’ve stuffed themselves on board. Not to mention damage to the infrastructure, eg in Venice. Should be banned for many reasons IMO. Might as well go on holiday to the Trafford Centre food court.

Iris1976 · 06/09/2023 21:28

How much extra do you end up paying in gratuities/tips please?

OP has already responded very reasonably to challenges about sustainability.

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/09/2023 21:43

Except that the impact of cruise ships is far worse than flying so I don’t think that’s true…

HoneyPotts · 06/09/2023 21:45

I’d happy vacation in the Trafford Centre food court if it floated somewhere hot with Mickey Mouse dancing to Let it Go.

I work in a high pressured job in the arts so anything considered populist to take me away from the pretentious crowd of sycophants I deal with on a daily basis is a win for me.
