Just got back from my first Disney cruise. I had loads of questions and couldn’t find any answers on here before we went so thought I’d do an AMA in case anyone else wants to ask :)

there’s random gifting to rooms

What sort of gifts were they?

I was given a large framed photo of the ship on one side and me and my children at dinner taken by the ship’s photographer on the other side. Also a random but delicious massive plate of chocolate covered strawberries. Just came back to my stateroom to find them there.

I've seen at least 3 different posters asking for costs, which you've yet to answer. It's possible you've just missed their questions, or maybe you don't feel comfortable sharing exact figures but ballpark would help.

Also, welcome to Mumsnet.

@TedWilson it cost just over £3,000 for two adults and two children for 4 nights to La Rochelle and back.

You must have missed this post where OP clearly stated how much it cost.

BethDuttonsTwin · 01/09/2023 18:32

“Welcome to Mumsnet” usually means you think someone is “trolling” or not posting with genuine intent. Are you trying to imply that @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz ?

lifeturnsonadime · 01/09/2023 18:40

The cost varies depending on itinerary and cabin type.

I'm about to go on a 7 night european cruise up to Denmark and Norway and got a good rate of £3100 for 3 of us in a Family balcony room (sleeps 5), this was because I was prepared to book a rate with a guaranteed room type rather than knowing where the cabin was. I think that is very good value for what is effectively a luxury all inclusive (bar alcohol) holiday.

@BethDuttonsTwin I have Alaska on the bucket list. What time of year did you go and how was the weather? Did you see much wildlife?

We went the last week of August into September and it was perfect weather, sunning and cloudless, but not shorts and T-shirt weather though. Also US and Canadian schools already gone back so ship not full. I personally saw whales, multiple seals - especially on glacier day, salmon running at Ketchikan, and one massive bear as our train excursion passed him stuffing his face with berries. It was all wonderful.

Disneydance · 01/09/2023 19:28

sorry I’m not sure what you mean?

@lifeturnsonadime i did the France one. I was a bit worried about the Bay of Biscay but it wasn’t too bad? There was a few excursions available but we just used the free shuttle to wander around. It felt like a short time to be onboard, but good for a first cruise

@Alycidon so there’s a few types! The first is called a Fish Extender which is a group of people who all buy gifts for eachother and leave them in bags outside their doors. I took part but the gifts were for their kids and mine. These are gifts that suit the child’s tastes so for example my son likes marvel so he got given a marvel towel in one bag. There’s also Pixie Dusting which is just random small things like sweets, bubbles, small plastic toys and you just drop them in any bags that are outside doors. We also got several gifts from our housekeeping teams which tended to be food based like a fruit platter one day, a cheese board one day and a plate of macaroons one day

Op says the cost a fair bit higher up the thread. Just over £3000 for 3 adults, 2 children for 4 nights, inc food.

scrivette · 01/09/2023 19:43

I saw a picture of a celebrity on a Disney Cruise this week (was it you?!) and it looked as if there were rails on the side of the ship. Were you not worried that DC could fall in or is there glass or plastic over them?

Disneydance · 01/09/2023 19:47

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz (love the name!) I did answer, I didn’t want to repeat myself in case it got tiresome. I said earlier it cost just over £3k for the four of us. And I’ve been on mumsnet for years, I just name change regularly because I tend to post personal or private questions and don’t want them linked to eachother :)

OP posts:
Disneydance · 01/09/2023 19:50

@scrivette there were a few influencers onboard when I was there. A bloke from west life and they filmed some bits for itv so there were a few! I’m a bit rubbish and didn’t recognise anyone (did see one influencer regularly, she had a huge camera with circle light and three miserable looking children being dragged behind her!)

I was on the same cruise and thought the same about her poor family. It was like they were her extras or something!

Disneydance · 01/09/2023 22:22

@indigovapour exactly! I kept telling myself that she probably only did an hour or so of filming a day and it’ll have paid for their holiday, but they just looked so sad every time I saw them in their matching outfits and Mickey ears. Massively changes the way I see videos like this now

I think Kate Lawler was on that cruise from posts I've seen on Facebook.

I got into a conversation with a very nice man on the northern european cruise last august, turns out it was John Thompson of Cold Feet fame and I literally had no idea. He wasn't doing social media, he was just having a family holiday and he is a very nice man.

Amazing, I'd suggest trying a longer itinerary next time. I don't think I could do a 4 night again it would go too quick x

Sounds perfect, I've driven around Canada in an RV and was fortunate enough to see bears and whales on a boat tour BUT this one sounds amazing so will consider it for summer months in the future.

Does anyone get sea sick on the cruises or is it less likely due to the size of them? 2 of mine were sea sick in the ferry across to France so this worried me when thinking about it.

I've been on a lot of cruises due to work. I don't know anyone who's got vomit seasick like on ferries however it's affects me strangely. I feel constantly a little bit nauseous. Alcohol hits me like a truck on them too (and I'm no lightweight).

A medic on a US cruise gave me a seasickness tablet once. She didn't warn me it was a sedative and I collapsed at a show. She also charged my room $100 for the privilege plus $100 to be taken to my room after I collapsed. So be careful.

QuietDragon · 01/09/2023 22:50

Is it very dressy? In the evenings for dinner/shows etc?

Disneydance · 02/09/2023 07:37

@QuietDragon its a bit of both? Some people get really dressed up for dinner, most change but don’t go over the top. The is a formal option one night and there were some nice dresses and suits, but still some shorts and t-shirts. My daughter lived in her princess dresses the entire time and was greeted as princess by every waiter and staff member. Lots of people wore Mickey ears to dinner, but lots didn’t. It was a choice on my cruise so a proper mix of clothes choices

I love a cruise, but do they do adults only?

No Disney have no adult only ships. Virgin are adult only on all ships and P&O do adult only on some ships. Also Celebrity while not an adult only line hardly have any kids on board.

HoneyPotts · 02/09/2023 19:40

Do you think it’s the kind of holiday two adults could enjoy without children?

Do you have to share a table with other guests at dinner? Is it easy to request a table for just the two of you if it’s a romantic getaway?
