I lied on my CV - AMA

Cvlying · 04/03/2023 06:34

Following on from a recent thread about cvs. Nc for this.
I have a fabricated cv- not completely but in my 20s what is on my cv isn't what I actually did.
After having children I changed career and couldn't find a job so I invented a job history that was fake. It worked and for the past 12 years I've been doing this career. I no longer put the fake history on cvs as I now have the experience to back it up.
Never got into trouble and always kept track of my lie.
So AMA

I agree. It doesn't matter whether her previous lies are relevant to her job now. She has no integrity and lying has been her default position to get what she wants. I wouldn't want anyone like that around me - professionally or personally.

You might have someone 'like that' around you now - unless they told you, how would you know?

If I found out I had someone like that around me I'd be cutting whatever ties I could with them.

Sorry, I missed your question! Let's wait and see if either of us get an answer!

Considering OP decided to post to AMA section on MN, there are an awful lot of questions that OP has decided not to respond to as yet!
I’m still waiting.

Dignorantonio · 05/03/2023 18:47

Fair enough!!

NaturalBae · 05/03/2023 18:49

OP - Considering you recognise that you struggle with empathy, do you actually line manage any staff?

NaturalBae · 05/03/2023 18:50

If so, how many staff members do you manage?

NaturalBae · 05/03/2023 18:51

Would you throw a colleague under a bus in order to save your own skin?

NaturalBae · 05/03/2023 18:54

I’ve got so many more questions but need to stop now to get on with dinner/our evening routine. I might be back later to read OPs responses.

NaturalBae · 05/03/2023 19:00

One more question; I’m intrigued!

OP - How would you feel and what would you do, if you found out that someone you line managed or someone in your team/company lied like you did????

Iliedtoo · 05/03/2023 19:02

I lied way back, 25+ years ago. My parents thought I'd completed a qualification, which I hadn't. My Mum had a friend in the same industry who was advertising so I applied and got the job - she never asked to see my qualifications (wouldn't happen now!). I kept the lie up for a while, including moving onto another job.

Absolutely hated it and it stressed me out really badly. I am now qualified to the level I needed to be back then, but no longer work in the industry.

It's awful, and I was ashamed for years, wouldn't recommend it!

Name changed for this..

embellished
hustling

You're both liars.

We are charlatans and chancers, guilty as charged.

Cvlying · 05/03/2023 19:52

I won't be telling them is ok to commit fraud.but I will tell them to apply for something if they haven't got all the criteria. Men will apply if they tick most of the boxes but women only if they tick all.
I haven't lied about my qualifications just my amount of experience.

I will tell them I got my first job fraudulently but my subsequent jobs were not

I work in IT

OP posts:
whitepicketfencers · 05/03/2023 19:58

Oh that small matter of not having the ten years relevant experience you lied that you had. All I can say is that I am glad you work in IT and not in some medical field.

Cvlying · 05/03/2023 19:58

Sorry trying to answer as many as I can
I do line manage.
I currently have 8 members of staff I manage

OP posts:
whitepicketfencers · 05/03/2023 20:00

Do you think you would get any respect from the staff you manage if they knew?

Cvlying · 05/03/2023 20:00

If I found out it would depend on how good they were at their job. If they were good probably nothing.

Yes, it’s fraud…but funnily enough I don’t actually have an issue with it.

You’ve proven you can do the job well, and you’ve been promoted several times. I think it just highlights the unnecessary bureaucracy and box ticking exercises of modern employment, and also lazy recruitment. Turns out you didn’t need all of that experience to do the job.

Agreed! I wish I had the guts to do this.

In fact, for my current role I massively underplayed CV. I wanted an easy part-time job and I thought if I put all qualifications and experience they'd just wonder why I wanted to work their so I left it off. Do people think this is wrong as well?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 05/03/2023 20:29

I think the responses here are very interesting.

I do a job I am wildly unqualified for. I fell into it in odd circumstances, and would never get my job if I applied for it in a different organisation. I don't think that's so unusual. So while I don't condone the OP's approach, I share her frustration at some of the absurdities or difficulties of modern hiring practice.

And, re references - I am foreign and I put down my (legitimate) referees knowing that most likely they couldn't be contacted.

ilovesooty · 05/03/2023 20:58

To me it doesn't matter that the OP has proved she can do the job now. She lied to get it in the first place which says a lot about her moral compass.

Someone I worked with who'd been doing her job for years with no issues was discovered to have lied on her application form and provided fraudulent references. I don't know how she was found out but she was sacked.

Meterry · 05/03/2023 21:16

I think we should just give rid of references and interviews all together. I mean who cares about vetting an employee anyway.

Hey op I wonder if you’re my last manager, we all wondered secretly how she got into a senior management role.

Mrsvyvyan · 05/03/2023 21:19

Our chief exec was escorted off for a job history lie less than yours not long ago.

purpledalmation · 05/03/2023 21:22

OP clearly has empathy problems along with a total inability to understand that AMA means you are meant to attempt to answer the questions. No moral compass as doesnt even feel guilt most people would feel. FFS i still feel guilty for stealing my friends pencil in junior school, and am paranoid about stealing since.
