What do you think of Derren Brown?

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 01/06/2022 21:28

My DB stopped smoking after hypnosis. It was done via a video call. How does that work?

Could you stop me blushing?

Wow!

Would this work for weight loss?

TheVolturi · 01/06/2022 21:35

You weren't practising in front of the mirror were you? Because you seem to have vanished. I hope you're not stuck in your bathroom under a spell.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/06/2022 23:01

Hello!

@CoffeeeLove - he's amazing!

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe - smoking cessation by hypnosis is relatively easy once you've decided to quit. It's the tobacco and nicotine replacement industries who benefit from the theory that smoking is more addictive than heroin. If that was true, hospitals would be overrun every New Year's Day with people going through withdrawal. The hard bit are the reasons why people smoke - which start with peer group acceptance and then go into habit, comfort and reward - which are more challenging. I smoked from the age of 11 for over 40 years and gave up overnight once I knew how the technique.

@TheyAreMinerals - Probably, but you still have to put in the work and change long term habits. Hypnosis for weight loss is rarely about calories or exercise - it's about self esteem, routine, comfort and self care. Once you understand that, making the changes is much easier.

@ssd - Absolutely. Blushing is a physical reaction to a thought or a feeling. Remove that stimulus and the reaction vanishes.

@whatsnewpussycat34 Yes. Your subconscious is telling you that out "there" is dangerous. Once you can figure out where that fear came from, you can switch off the fear.

@TheVolturi - Mirror in the Bathroom. Great song! ;)

Thanks for the answer. Can it work for drinking too much? Is it an all or nothing situation like smoking?

Another question - what has been your strangest request?

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/06/2022 23:32

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe - Yes, I've helped someone who wanted to regulate (not stop) their drinking. It's a matter of finding out the underlying reason and dealing with that, not the surface problem.

The strangest request was a young guy who suffered from terrible travel sickness, he told me this while in the passenger seat of my car as I drove with my usual, um, enthusiasm!

Turned out he got sick on a school trip when he was 11 (and had been ridiculed as a result) and his subconscious had been petrified that it would happen again - the shame, not the illness. Knowing the reason for the anxiety was not the motion of the transport but the embarrassment of that one occasion cured the problem.

Can you stop me craving sugar?
How do I find a reputable hypnotist near me?

Namenic · 01/06/2022 23:45

What do you do in hypnosis? It sounds like you talk to people - like counselling?

Libertaire · 01/06/2022 23:50

How do you hypnotise a cynical old git who thinks hypnotism is a load of bollocks and refuses to play along?

Asking for a friend, obv…

42isthemeaning · 01/06/2022 23:53

Would hypnosis stop me biting my nails?
What if I'm scared of losing control under hypnosis?

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 01/06/2022 23:58

Have you ever done a hypnotic gastric bypass? Do you do much after maintenance?

Heretochill · 02/06/2022 00:01

I’ve tried 2 in the past related to blushing / confidence with speaking in public / all eyes on me.

So far it’s been more than £1k down the drain.

What would you recommend I look out for when trying to find my next - as I really want to crack this!

thanks 😊

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/06/2022 08:00

@Washaday - I would always recommend a medical checkup to rule out things such as diabetes but, assuming everything is normal and it's an emotional craving then yes, that will respond to hypnosis. When looking for a hypnotist word of mouth recommendations are the best indicator - where are you based? I might be able to give you a name.

@Namenic - I don't use trance so yes, it's a talking therapy. The difference is that I talk directly with your subconscious (while you are awake) to find out why it's doing something it thinks is right but is not actually helping you. Once we can get it back on track then the problem is solved.

@Libertaire - depends on how badly you what to sort your issue out; it's not troubling me at all! But seriously, tell your friend I do a free, no commitment initial consultation to see if I can help and if we can work together. If not then you've only invested 40 minutes of your time (but you will have learnt something!)

@42isthemeaning Yes, but you will still need will power. As you are awake and aware throughout you can't loss control.

@Heaviestdirtyestsoul I haven't - but I've heard of very good results, I think Marissa Peer is an expert in that field.

@Heretochill The is always an answer. You weren't born afraid of speaking in public, you learnt it somewhere and there's a part of your subconscious which believes it's the right think to do. With the way I work we don't finish until the problem is sorted out - if that means doing extra sessions (the norm is 3) then so be it.

What training and qualifications do you have?

FinanceLPlates · 02/06/2022 08:12

How did you train? Is there some sort of qualification? Do you need to be particularly “gifted” or could anyone learn how to do hypnosis? Do you need to practice regularly so you don’t lose the ability?
(Sorry many questions but all related)

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/06/2022 08:36

@Ishka and @FinanceLPlates - Hypnosis is an unregulated therapy as you may be aware. I learnt it from the back of a cornflake packet...

Just joking! I trained with a well known practitioner who runs a very well structured training programme, with a minimum of 100 hours of self study and a final review of at least 5 test cases plus masses of both initial and ongoing back up support from him and my fellow practitioners.

I'd previously studied CBT to level 4 and have a background of customer facing roles so I love talking to people.

Is there a registry where one can search for a trained/accredited hypnotist?

newbiename · 02/06/2022 10:12

I've trued it for weight loss , I fully believe in it. It didn't work , I have inattentive ADHD , do you think that's why? I'd like to try again.

MindPalace · 02/06/2022 10:16

Can you be hypnotised to forget about /deal with a traumatic event that hurts so much it is holding back your life?

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2022 10:20

A friend paid £90 an hour to try and cure her (diagnosed) IBS. Didn't make any noticeable difference sadly, she was pretty desperate.
I suggested trying the Speakmans next.

havecourage · 02/06/2022 10:44

I work as a physiotherapist and a lot of my patients have chronic pain. Would training as a hypnotherapist compliment this? How long would it take?
