Virtual fundraiser

Looking for ideas as this is all very new to me.
I've always wanted to do some fundraising for charity but I've been too scared, mainly worrying too much that I won't get any donations and look silly being no where near target.
I'm trying to put that aside and look at possible options, that myself and 5 year old son do together (he's always with me so need to keep him involved).
I was looking at hikes/walks but no suitable dates/ places, or linked to Charities I want to give back to. One in particular is over seas, a heart charity that helped my brother greatly while he underwent open heart surgery, and a defibrillator fitted, at only 32. He was alone with his wife, so they're help was very much appreciated. His condition is heridatory so I would also like to donate some to research of the specific condition here in the uk (Scotland)
Having this goal will give us motivation we need to get up and out practicing, so would love to do it over summer months when we're both off.
The only idea I could think of was doing a virtual 10km but over a month, everything else seemed simple/easy or too hard for my son.
What are people's thoughts on this? Or any other ideas? And what way is best to ask for the donations, are online sites reliable? Any comments are much appreciated.
