Why did you?

duvetdayforeveryone · 09/03/2022 22:08

Did you miss family/friends?

Cubitalfossa · 09/03/2022 22:08

Where did you go?

BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN · 09/03/2022 22:20

Have you retired somewhere sunny?

Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 08:49

We had a business that someone wanted to buy. We didn’t want to set up all over again so sold the business and the house and moved to a place we had been visiting for about 15 years at the time

Some family members came too, others bought holiday homes in the same place and others visit, so no not really

We’re in the Algarve. I’m retired now but I was only late 30s when we moved. My husband is slowing down a bit now but still works every day. We’re now late 50s/60

What is your visa situation "abroad"? Are you there as tourists?

Do you have enough money from the business sale to live without working for the rest of your lives?

zafferana · 10/03/2022 08:53

Do you speak the language?
Do you have any regrets?
Do you plan to live there for the rest of your lives? I'm thinking of all the elderly people who 'retire' to Spain and then when they get really infirm come trundling back to the UK for the free healthcare.

Playplayaway · 10/03/2022 08:55

Did you have children at the time? If so, what were their ages and did they settle well?

Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 09:04

No children then or now. Yes I speak Portuguese.

When we came in 2003 you could get residency very easily, and I’m now a Portuguese citizen. We don’t plan to leave, I have already had life changing surgery here, plus two other operations.

There is no ‘free’ healthcare for returning expats, not for about 6 months or so

Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 09:06

We had a bit of money behind us but we still needed to work, we just didn’t have a plan of what we would do

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 09:07

No, no regrets at all, in fact I’m glad we came when we did it’s so much more difficult now.

We didn’t come to retire, we came to work and live a normal life.

It was nearly 20 years ago when we were in our late 30s/early 40s

OP posts:
Febrier · 10/03/2022 10:15

Hm. What do you think people will get from your thread?

Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 10:52

I don’t know. Whatever they want to know I suppose

Saffy321 · 11/03/2022 08:02

Were you fluent when you went? if not how did you get work and what did you do?

Costacoffeeplease · 11/03/2022 09:18

No I wasn’t fluent. My first job was working for an estate agent. Most clients were English or English speaking and my boss spoke Portuguese. Then I set up a holiday let business working for myself
