Anyone curious?

Thanks for the kind messages by the way, to those who have posted them :) I am so glad I got it done. No weirdness in the gym changeroom now, or in the bedroom, or discomfort on bicycles Grin

@FlagFlaps

Yes that’s the joke NiceGerbil

Menopausal shrinkage - yes I do worry about it a little. Surgeon was fairly dismissive of this concern, as he was about the chance of tearing in childbirth. I asked him to remove less than he intended to, for these reasons.

Just to clarify for anyone reading, labia size is not associated with the chance of tearing in childbirth.
FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 11:04

It is when those labia have scar tissue halfway along their length, FallingIguanas

In case you’re interested, there are two kinds of labiaplasty, commonly referred to as the “wedge” and the “trim”. The trim leaves you with scar tissue along the edges of the labia.

The wedge, which is what I had, leaves you with (invisible, but still present) horizontal scar tissue. I fully expect these to burst apart if I were to have another child (had my first before the surgery).

So, yes - in my case, [artificially reduced] labia size will have a very big impact on my chances of tearing.

Mine are big and hang. I've thought about labioplasty a couple of times just for aesthetic reasons, but I can't justify the cost and it makes me feel really squeamish.

FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 11:09

Trim method and wedge method.

I’ve had labiaplasty.

missbunnyrabbit how much would you be prepared to pay do you think?

It is a horrible thought isn’t it. But I would do it again for sure. It wasn’t painful for me.

Were your outer labia actually bigger than normal and looked so, or were you just wanting a tidier vulva (more like a very young girl)? Sorry that's not meant to sound as though you're aiming for a 12 year old vulva to sexually attract men who like very young girls!

FallingIguanas · 29/07/2020 11:26

Yes, your scar tissue will increase the chances of tearing in the same way as women who've, for example, had a previous significant tear/episiotomy. Care providers can help reduce the risk via warm packs, controlled 2nd stage and optimal positioning. Opting for an elective CS is another option. Thanks for sharing.

FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 11:29

They were what is sometimes referred to as “flagged” labia puzzled, annoyingly I can’t find a diagram right now but basically the labia were quite narrow and hung down outside of my labia majora. They felt very “extraneous” - had no sensitivity and just felt like pointless extra skin.

I guess I wanted it tidier - but if I’d had one of the vulvas that look like an exotic flower, I think I would have been happy. I didn’t want a smooth featureless Barbie vulva. I just didn’t want a turkey wattle between my legs.

“ Yes, your scar tissue will increase the chances of tearing in the same way as women who've, for example, had a previous significant tear/episiotomy.”

Exactly. I have an episiotomy scar too. Warm packs might help but as I said - if I have another child, and if I don’t have a CS, I don’t think it will be pretty.

Glad it worked out for you

RiaOverTheRainbow · 29/07/2020 11:50

Have you seen the great wall of vagina? Did it make you feel better/worse/anything about your own vulva?

ThickFast · 29/07/2020 11:59

What’s your view on the thinking that labiaplasty has a lot in common with FGM, as this article states.

www.awid.org/news-and-analysis/female-genital-mutilation-and-cosmetic-genital-surgery-do-they-have-anything

FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 12:03

RiaOverTheRainbow yes, I have and I had seen it before I had the op.

It made me feel worse because I still didn’t see anything that resembled my vulva.

OP posts:
FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 12:12

ThickFast I will read the article now.

From what I know of FGM, there are different types. One type (where the labia minora are removed) has parallels to labiaplasty. Other types (where the clitoris is removed, or the labia majora are sewn together) bear little resemblance in my opinion.

However, intention is important. To expand on what I said above (about removal of labia minora being similar in both FGM and LP). If I were a surgeon performing a nose job, I would at some point take a tool to that patient’s nose bridge and break it. That doesn’t mean that I then have the right to take that tool down the pub with me, hold someone down and break their nose with it against their will. So the intention is different, and in almost all cases I imagine the FGM is involuntary.

There is also the issue of risk, pain and complications. FGM is, as I understand it, generally performed under dire circumstances with no pain relief, causing risk of further injury, infection, etc. And it undoubtedly causes excrutiating pain, the likes of which I don’t wish to even contemplate. So in that way - not the same at all.

I will mention the huge risk of ongoing medical and sexual complications, emotional trauma etc but won’t go into detail as many others have written far more movingly than I have on the subject.

OP posts:
FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 12:14

Hit post because I didn’t want to lose what I had written!

Ok to continue. FGM is designed to actively inhibit sexual pleasure. Labiaplasty, in my case, has increased it (for psychological reasons) and has had no negative effects on sensation etc.

So - in summary, I would say that the “labiaplasty = FGM” argument is pretty lazy.

I’m not sure I’ve really looked so I wouldn’t know. I think if something is causing you discomfort and you can sort that out then why not!?

FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 12:38

neigh your username is great Grin

I find it so strange to think that someone hasn’t looked, but I was like you before! And thank you, I agree. There are outliers of all body parts ... people get their noses And boobs reduced, their earlobes pinned or reduced, they even have excess skin taken off their faces when they get old enough. Why the vulva should be any different is beyond me

OP posts:
ThickFast · 29/07/2020 13:25

Thanks for giving such a detailed answer. I tend to agree with you, although I can see the similarities in the whole ‘changing your body to fit with societal norms’ aspect. But then I feel that about all cosmetic surgery. I wish we lived in a way that no one felt a part of their body was ugly and needed to have surgery to change it.

FlagFlaps · 29/07/2020 13:37

I agree ThickFast. It would be nice if we could all be happy with what we have.

Honestly though, it wasn’t just aesthetic, my flaps got in the way. I’m so glad they’re gone

Op, thanks so much for starting this thread!

I'm exactly as you've described - turkey wattle!

Can I ask who your surgeon was?

Also, did you notice a difference during sex, prior and post surgery?

A lot of the time I feel like I have a lump of steak hanging out of my vulva, so I'm seriously thinking about this op.

QuestionableMouse · 31/07/2020 17:12

@QuestionableMouse

Good for you. Did you make em bigger or smaller?
I feel I should apologise for this comment. I mistook the thread for a troll post.
HandsomeMaid · 31/07/2020 17:18

flagflaps I had this surgery too about 6 years ago. There’s no feeling of scar tissue at all now and I can finally wear lacey knickers without horror.

gnushoes · 31/07/2020 18:07

Glad it went well for you but to those considering it - lots of women's labia disappear almost entirely at menopause which is a hell of a shock and something HRT doesn't really address. Many also have Genito urinary syndrome of menopause which is as nasty as it sounds, and women with scar tissue from episiotomies and tears often find that a problem. I cannot imagine that an earlier labiaplasty would improve any of this.

DoTheNextRightThing · 31/07/2020 18:10

OP thank you for this post! I've been considering it for a long time. Very interesting to hear your experience!
