I'm a rockstar on hiatus - Ask Me (Almost) Anything

I'm a semi-successful musician in a rock band. It's my only occupation, has been for some years. I've been a lot of places, seen a lot of stuff and met a lot of people. Ask me anything. I can't answer everything for various reasons but let's see how it goes...

@IslandbreezeNZ

Did you ever have the pleasure of meeting George Michael and if yes, what was he like?
Fun fact, I was once told off by my record label for saying I was a fan of George Micahel. Apparently, it's not very cool.

How rich are you though?!

SweetnSaltyPopcornPlease · 25/07/2020 20:01

@1forAll74

I don't think you should have any anxiety, unless you have hidden away somewhere, as you must have many many friends from your life and style,so communicating with some of them will keep you going mentally.
Actually it's pretty lonely when your (normal) friends don't understand your lifestyle. You have different problems. It's quite a unique experience being in this (music) world. I've met loads of artists but I kind of wish I had maintained the friendships, it's people who know what we are each going through in life.

Are you recouped on your record deal, or your publishing? Does your record co take a cut of your live?
Yes and yes, but the merchandise profits are all ours.

@allybird1

Well I think you're amazing anyway. I spent my student loan (over 25 years ago 😂) on watching bands. Totally in awe of anyone in the music business.
Ah, thank you. Shame my dad never lived to see me perform. He wasn't happy with my career choice but I like to think I could have won him over.

@AngryAngel

Do you get to go to any live shows where you are incognito in the crowd? What was the last gig you saw live?

I would hate to be so famous that I couldn't go to gigs. I miss live music. Sad

I know enough people that don't have to pay to see an artist live. I'm pretty low key so it's not a problem. At festivals I'll usually be side of stage where I won't get crushed or recognised by the crowd.

Have you ever farted in famous company and tried to hide it with a cough!?

SweetnSaltyPopcornPlease · 25/07/2020 20:22

@TryAnotherNickname

Do you have the same manager / accountant/ lawyer as when you started? Do you resent that the 20% or have they earned it?
Same manager, different accountant, different lawyer. Our lawyer also does One Direction, so he stopped taking calls from all other music 'civilians'. He's probably on a private island somewhere.

@thedaytodayyesterday

I have to massively disagree with your advice to not go to music college. I have a degree and a masters degree in classical music and composition from a college of music. I have a fulfilling career teaching, conducting orchestras and writing music for TV and film. I also have plenty of session work and other professional bookings. As do plenty of my fellow alumni who are frequently heard on classic fm or radio 3. Others have gone on to be in bands for artists like Kylie Minogue or become sound engineers etc. No, we're not all in semi successful rock bands nor is there a guarantee that you will be if you go to music college. But I will not have music college dismissed as "nonsense".
Ah, fair enough. It is different with classical instruments. I jumped straight to rock band genre because I'm in a rock band. If he wants to be in a band then I stand by what I said. If he wants to play as part of an orchestra then yes music college may be of some help. Plenty of artists have string quartets or play on albums as session musicians. He still needs a back up option though!

Have you ever played St the Red Rocks amphitheatre in Co! Fab venue

SweetnSaltyPopcornPlease · 25/07/2020 20:30

@MissConductUS

Is there any classical music you enjoy, or jazz?
Classic fm is on my radio presets. I especially love it during December.

@nitgel

What do you think of the end of music magazines? And Q closing this week ?
It's very sad. We've been on the cover of music magazines and had features. Physical print media is a special experience that the next generation will miss out on.
