I've been blogging about perfume since 2013. Ask me anything. No snobbery, all budgets and nothing is off the table.

What scents are similar to Jean Paul Gaultier? Worn it for years and love it but want to try something new.

MissBattleaxe · 09/08/2019 22:21

@matahairry (great name) Tricky one as I haven't smelled it, but after some research on Fragrantica, you could try anything with Clary sage. almonds, lavender and suede. Fragrantica users say that almonds are the most prominent note, so start from there maybe?

Can you suggest something invigorating (maybe citrussy?) For hot summer days? I have dry skin which reduces a lot of fragrances to a sweet, powdery scent within half an hour or so.

My favourite perfumes, which work well with my skin and last well with proper complex smell changes are PHI and Incense Rosé by Andy Tauer and Frederic Malle's Une Rose, although I can't afford a whole bottle of Une Rose, and it ends up smelling literally like sex, so I have to be careful where I wear it. I like Acqua di Parma, but it is just too quick to fade.

Maybelle15 · 09/08/2019 22:22

Any recommendations for something that smells like lancomes discontinued miracle so magic? I have tried for over a year, searching the top notes etc and seeking ones recommended online however none are even remotely like it

MissBattleaxe · 09/08/2019 22:23

@Quaffy My answer is not really one you might to wear but the most distinctive one I've ever tried was Etat Libre D'Orange Secretions Magnifique. Do not buy it blind, but do Google Katie Puckrick's YouTube review.

@BroomstickofLove try 4160 Tuesdays Raw Silk and Red Roses or Red Queen (roses and incense). Both more affordable and very long lasting. Plus you can get discounts on refills when they're empty.

What do you think of Molecule 01 and where could I go to smell it? (I know CB sell it)

M0RVEN · 09/08/2019 22:28

@MissBattleaxe thank you

MissBattleaxe · 09/08/2019 22:30

@wishuponarainbow I like the slight nail polish feel of JPG so look for something with pear. I once read an interview with him saying that JPG Classique ( as it's now known) was the scent of his mother's and grandmother's handbag. I loved that.

@Maybelle15 Fragrantica is telling me that Zara White is a dead ringer.

I have to go to bed now but I am beyond chuffed to see so many wonderful questions! If I've accidentally left out your question, then do nudge me with an "ahem"

Keep them coming and I'll be back tomorrow. In the meantime, my blog www.iscentyouaday.com has over a thousand perfume reviews. Sweet dreams until tomorrow!

I have another discontinued perfume question! I reckon you’ll be kept busy with these all night.
My first perfume love was Kenzo Ca Sent Beau...could you recommend anything along the same lines?

fruitofthenight · 09/08/2019 22:34

Thanks @missbattleaxe and @yesqueen! Looking forward to something new

MissBattleaxe · 10/08/2019 19:52

@tothesea Try this link Also, lots of people say it smells like Kenzo by kenzo, which is also discontinued, but on Fragrantica, 11 people say Kenzo by Kenzo smells like Cacharel Eden.

@tothesea try this link instead. bit.ly/2OOVk2y

@suze2B I've never smelled Molecule 01 actually, but people have told me that it's more of an enhancement to other scents rather than a stand alone but I could be wrong.

What are suitable perfumes for a 43 year old?

I don't want to be either mutton dresses as lamb. Or lamb dressed as mutton.

MissBattleaxe · 10/08/2019 19:59

@Loveluella DS& Durga is mainly mint, lavender and lime, so try JPG Le Male which also has these.

MissBattleaxe · 10/08/2019 20:02

@OhioOhioOhio you'll never be mutton dressed as lamb as far as perfume goes. Wear what you like and like what you wear! People will soon associate your favourite perfume with you and they really won't care what age it was designed for. I'm 49 and I wear powdery chypres, SJP Lovely, and Avon cheapies, among hundreds of others!

What do you think is the best rose scented perfume. It's for someone who has been addicted to Jo Malone Red Roses for years but wants to try a something new - but still with maximum rose!

Bobbindobbin · 10/08/2019 20:04

What do you think of the Philosophy perfumes? I’ve heard conflicting opinions

pinkmagic1 · 10/08/2019 20:06

Can you recommend a perfume similar to Givenchy Fluer D' Interdit? It was my first proper perfume and I absolutely loved it but sadly discontinued.

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 10/08/2019 20:09

Just bumping up my question Smile

Any suggestions for an alternative to Anna Sui original?

Thank you

OhioOhioOhio · 10/08/2019 20:11

Really? OK then. I will. Thank you.
