I have been diagnosed with tinitus. I have three continuous noises inside my ears/head 24/7. I am almost habituated but willing to help
others who have this or anyone who is interested in what it is like.

Does it go away if you put ear plugs in? At night I hear a ringing sound which goes if I put ear plugs in- I'm convinced it's a real noise that DH cant hear. The nurse I saw says tinnitus but I feel that would still be there with ear plugs?

Tinnitus often accompanies hearing loss. Is this the case with you? I suffered 20 years of tinnitus and found the only way to overcome it (apart from being in noise) was to ignore it.

Garlic capsules can help some people's tinnitus

Have you tried that tapping the back of your head thing?

I suffer with it too, it started 9 years ago and I don't notice it too much now

I was terrified of tinntius by the way it was described to me by other members of the family. Developed it age 48 - terrified at first- barely notice it now. You eventually learn to zone out, ignore it, not fear it, and life goes on! Part of the ageing process!

No it doesn't go if I put ear plugs in. I have been told there is no cure.
The noises I have are a low idling engine, very high pitched tone and a white noise 'ssshhhhhh' type sound. If I am poorly or something is too loud it goes louder (spikes) I would say I have semi habituated to it. When I first got it I could not hear the tv for it.

Yes ignoring it was the only answer. Teach my brain that it is not important, a bit like a ticking clock.

I think you've had a name change fail!

I also have tinnitus, I've had it 10 years. I've got used to it and only hear it when I think about it (like now for example!).

Have you had your hearing tested? For me, it's a symptom of hearing loss. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in one ear. I was only 26 when it happened so it doesn't necessarily relate to age or damage. For me it is thought to be nerve damage following a virus.

I've had tinnitus constantly (and I mean no let up) since 2007. It's coming from the centre of my head and even now, that high pitch squeal doesn't even quieten... drives me insane. I've seen specialists who've just said 'learn to live with it/manage it'.... easy for them to say...

Yes there is no cure other than habituation. I can't imagine what silence Is like now. Dead strange.
