Genuine question - do you feel your role is respected by others?

Hmmm... no I don't think so. Mostly I think that is because people don't know what lobbyists do, or think of us more as American style lobbyists for guns/tobacco/big pharma etc who promise big donations etc for voting a certain way.

Most people have never even considered charities (for example) use lobbyists all the time and I suspect most people would respect them.

No - I'd say I work in public affairs to everyone professionally (although that has problem too - lots of people say they work in public affairs and actually they don't do much with politicians...). I often say lobbyist socially though as you get very blank faces otherwise

I've done both. Currently in-house but most of my public affairs career has been agency.
