I’m a Manager at McDonalds Smile

I’ve worked for McDonalds for several years in different stores and have received personal awards for my customer service. I never initially wanted to become a manager, however with the support and encouragement of my business manager I went through the crew development programme to become one.

So... AMA? Grin

Hi sorry this may have been asked before but is it true that your fish fillet is fried in the same oil as meat items?

Blueemeraldagain · 16/08/2018 14:16

nobody is that bloody cheerful about their job

This is how I feel. I love my job (I’ve taught English in an SEMH school for 5 years). Honestly I do. My partner (works at the same school) gets sick of me banging on about it. But even I am not so rose-tinted about the job/place.

If you are genuine then I apologise but surely you can see it’s unusual?

Filzma · 16/08/2018 14:25

What is your personal go to order? If someone hadn't tasted anything McDonald's (relax, I have), what would be the one meal you'd have them try?

JellyBears · 16/08/2018 14:29

My toddler is unwell been up all night, shes asleep I ubered a McDonalds haha thanks 🙏

DottyDotAgain · 16/08/2018 14:36

Hello - thanks for this thread and apologies if a question like this has already been asked and I've missed it!

Ds (aged 16) has just this week applied for 2 x McD's jobs via the online application system, for local vacancies, and has been rejected for both Sad. Is it really hard to get a job at McD's (I've heard they are a really good employer so can understand if it is!) or is he filling in the SJT questions terribly?! His hours were fairly limited so we're also wondering if that might have been why. Is it worth him continuing to try to apply and put way more availability on the application and then negotiate if he gets an interview?

Thanks in advance for any top tips for him to secure a part-time job!

In a way to bond with my teenage daughter and to make her laugh (rate treat!) I put funny voices on at drive through window!

Will the staff think I’m bonkers!!

TinoBeans · 16/08/2018 15:45

OP How did you get in to working at McDonalds and did you have any different career aspirations before you got in to McD's?

Also how long have you been working there now and how long have you been a manager?

I have RTFT but sorry if you've answered and I missed it Smile

PinkAvocado · 16/08/2018 15:58

OP, ok so of course I haven’t used Macdonald’s data to see what they have to come to the conclusion that there’s little demand for veggies and none for vegan Hmm. However, many vegans (and given poor choice for veggies, vegetarians) won’t be accessible to collect data from as they won’t be going into a MD because there is no reason to. Vegetarians and vegans like junk too! It’s a growing market that other restaurants have cottoned on to.

SadieHH · 16/08/2018 16:03

Why wouldn't they sell vegan/veggie if there was a call for it? So it's probably safe to assume that if they don't, then they must feel it isn't profitable because I can't see them cutting off a source of much profit just to piss people off.

PinkAvocado · 16/08/2018 16:10

I don’t think they have done the research that would tell them that tbh otherwise why does everywhere else do it?

Norland · 16/08/2018 16:12

Some of your answers are contradictaory. I CAN get mayonnaise
and/or vinegar in a French McDonalds and given salt 'n' vinegar is a very British thing, I don't see why you can't have sachets of vinegar. Especially as McDonalds do make changes to suit a particular geography.

annoyedofnorwich We don’t do vinegar because vinegar on chips is a very British thing and McDonalds is an American company, and we don’t do mayonnaise because there isn’t enough demand for it.

Why are fries sizes so different across countries? Large fries in the US/Canada are at least twice as big as the large fries in Brazil!

Different sizes to suit different markets

Sweden and Denmark are entirely different countries with different cultures and different needs to the UK, so the product mix is obviously going to reflect that. It’s not as simple as ‘X does it so Y should too’.

Why do you microwave lettuce?
Why do the burgers in the buns never look the same as the ones in the pictures? i.e. post-microwaving, they are much flatter.

TwoBlueShoes · 16/08/2018 16:36

Ok,so, if a branch is making milkshakes that are too thick, is it possible for the machine to be recalibrated?

Thanks so much for doing this AMA!

AthenaisdeRochechouart · 16/08/2018 17:16

You need to buy a watch so you can actually be on time for breakfast and stop taking your ineffectual punctuality out on people who are working incredibly hard in what can be a very stressful job

Your positive McBot demeanour slipped for a moment there, OP.

Re: vegan food - I can't imagine anyone who is vegan for ethical reasons (animal welfare and environmental concerns) would want to eat at McDonalds.

EggysMom · 16/08/2018 18:16

Orders should be assembled on a tray or in a bag and then the pick ticket is printed; this then shows up on the collect board so you can step forward while fries and rinks are being collected.

Nope. They print the pick ticket, then slowly go and scoop fries and sort the drink. I know it takes 2 minutes because I timed it out of frustration. And it only takes a second for me to step forwards when my number moves to the 'ready to collect' side of the display, so that's 1:59 waiting ... Do you think I should point out this anomaly to the manager? Grin

MintedLamb · 16/08/2018 18:31

How do we make suggestions to McDonald's OP? No one has ever asked me my opinion on mayonnaise and I would very much like it.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/08/2018 18:38

All I know is that it's a million times less stressful for me.

SadieHH That’s great! And it’s definitely what we aim for; we don’t want our customers to be stressed, we want them to have a great experience.

Hi sorry this may have been asked before but is it true that your fish fillet is fried in the same oil as meat items?

JamTea Both the filet and the fingers are cooked in their own special vat; no other product goes in there.

All vats are filtered regularly throughout the day, however as it is alongside the chicken vats we cannot remove all traces of oil in our equipment, so it is possible there are minute traces of the oil that cooks the chicken coming into contact with the oil that cooks the fish.

Our fry vats, however, are completely separate, and no vegetarian patty comes into contact with any meat product.

If you are genuine then I apologise but surely you can see it’s unusual?

Blueemeraldagain I’m aware not everyone is as passionate or enthusiastic about their job as I am, but that just makes me feel extremely lucky Smile

What is your personal go to order? If someone hadn't tasted anything McDonald's (relax, I have), what would be the one meal you'd have them try?

Filzma My first question would be whether they preferred chicken or beef, and then I’d go from there. If they said beef I’d suggest the Big Mac, but if they preferred chicken I would probably recommend the legend.

My toddler is unwell been up all night, shes asleep I ubered a McDonalds haha thanks

JellyBears You’re welcome! Smile

His hours were fairly limited so we're also wondering if that might have been why. Is it worth him continuing to try to apply and put way more availability on the application and then negotiate if he gets an interview?

DottyDotAgain I would say that yes, it’s probably due to his limited availability that he’s being rejected. McDonalds can be very flexible, but if you put such limited availability on the application and they’ve got loads of other applicants with better availability, those ones will be chosen for interview.

So I would suggest widening your availability and then explaining the situation at interview - if he comes across well they would probably hire him. McDonalds hires for attitude, not experience.

In a way to bond with my teenage daughter and to make her laugh (rate treat!) I put funny voices on at drive through window!

Will the staff think I’m bonkers!!

Mrsfloss Probably! But they’ll enjoy it as much as you do Grin

OP How did you get in to working at McDonalds and did you have any different career aspirations before you got in to McD's?

TinoBeans I’ve suffered with extremely bad anxiety in the past and was virtually housebound for a good few years. After I recovered, I wanted something nice and easy, so I tried McDonalds. They were willing to give me a chance despite my lack of any previous work experience because they appreciated the personal journey I’d been on and my manager at the time said it showed strength of character.

The problem for me was that I never really knew what I wanted to do. Before anxiety took over my life I was just unsure about what sort of career I wanted.

Also how long have you been working there now and how long have you been a manager?

I have worked at McDonalds for just over four years now, and I’ve been a manager for two and a half.

Because McDonalds employs a lot of young people (16-18), you find a lot of managers are very young (most under 25) as they have worked their way up, but even though they are young they have years of excellent training and experience behind them.

I have known store managers as young as 22!

However, many vegans (and given poor choice for veggies, vegetarians) won’t be accessible to collect data from as they won’t be going into a MD because there is no reason to

PinkAvocado McDonalds research isn’t limited to McDonalds customers; they do extensive research both in and outside the company.

Why wouldn't they sell vegan/veggie if there was a call for it?

SadieHH That’s exactly it - they would happily increase vegetarian options and add in vegan ones if there was a call for it.

I don’t think they have done the research that would tell them that tbh otherwise why does everywhere else do it?

PinkAvocado As I said, McDonalds research isn’t limited to McDonalds customers. Their research is wide and extensive; if the demand was high enough, they’d do it.

I CAN get mayonnaise and/or vinegar in a French McDonalds and given salt 'n' vinegar is a very British thing, I don't see why you can't have sachets of vinegar. Especially as McDonalds do make changes to suit a particular geography.

Norland There is a world of difference between America and France, whereas the UK and America are so very similar that there is little point to making small changes when the overall model generally suits the market.

Why do you microwave lettuce?

We don’t microwave lettuce. It is stored in the chiller and then taken out an hour before use so it can be tempered correctly.

What made you think that?! That’s one I haven’t heard before.

Why do the burgers in the buns never look the same as the ones in the pictures? i.e. post-microwaving, they are much flatter.

We try to make our sandwiches gold standard, but crew aren’t robots. And again, there is no microwaving Confused

Ok,so, if a branch is making milkshakes that are too thick, is it possible for the machine to be recalibrated?

TwoBlueShoes The milkshakes are meant to be thick. The milkshake machine is calibrated every morning as part of our daily checks, and it’s also calibrated randomly once a week as well.

Your positive McBot demeanour slipped for a moment there, OP.

AthenaisdeRochechouart I’m a positive and happy person, I love my customers, but I have a duty of care for my crew and I won’t allow them to be shouted at or receive rudeness or abuse because someone has issues with punctuality.

If you want breakfast, you have to be there when we are serving breakfast. It’s really that simple.

Re: vegan food - I can't imagine anyone who is vegan for ethical reasons (animal welfare and environmental concerns) would want to eat at McDonalds.

That’s the thing - if your belief system is vegan, there is little chance of you ever stepping foot in a McDonalds. Sure, you’ll get the odd few that go with their friends, but this is why demand for McDonalds to produce vegan products or more vegetarian ones is so low.

EggysMom That’s why I said “should”, because that is what they are trained to do. They are trained to assemble the order on a tray/in a bag, then print the pick ticket (so it comes up on the screen and you can step forward), go to fries and then to drinks.

The issue in your store can be rectified with corrective coaching by the managers/crew trainers.

How do we make suggestions to McDonald's OP?

MintedLamb Use the Food For Thoughts system! You can even get a £1.99 Big Mac and Fries for doing so Smile

Why did they change the shape of the mcchicken sandwich buns but not the actual mcchicken?

I'm sure they both used to be oval.

Aragog · 16/08/2018 20:33

In Canada and France (maybe others but thats where I know for sure) can you get a double fillet o-fish, but not in the UK? They were fab!

SheldonCooper77 · 16/08/2018 20:45

Would you put a 16 year old new employee on cooking straight away on their first shift or do you ease them in gently?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/08/2018 21:35

Why did they change the shape of the mcchicken sandwich buns but not the actual mcchicken?

Bluelonerose They haven’t. Are you perhaps thinking of the smaller Mayo Chicken?

Also in the US they just use a toasted bun, not a sesame seed bun.

In Canada and France (maybe others but thats where I know for sure) can you get a double fillet o-fish, but not in the UK? They were fab!

Aragog Lack of popularity presumably. Some areas in the UK will sell more fish than others, but the fillet is one of our least popular sandwiches.

Would you put a 16 year old new employee on cooking straight away on their first shift or do you ease them in gently?

SheldonCooper77 Absolutely! In McDonalds we have a buddy system, so when a new starter begins, they will have a Crew Trainer. That Crew Trainer will stay with them and train them on different stations.

So yes of course, we could expect them to begin grill on their first day because there is no reason not to, but they wouldn’t be alone; they would be with a fully trained experienced crew trainer who would guide them at each step of the way.

Sorry OP I wasn't really clear when I asked the question about groups of teens loitering. I used to visit a city centre McDonalds with 2 floors and there was always a group of teens upstairs (where there were no staff) nursing a couple of drinks between them. They were always vaping and often shouting and swearing and making the place feel quite antisocial. Should the staff have done anything about this?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/08/2018 22:08

crazycatgal Absolutely. We don’t tolerate swearing, shouting or antisocial behaviour from anyone, and anyone displaying these would first be asked to stop and second be asked to leave.
