I don't ACTUALLY walk into places and see to it that half the workforce is laid off - but it tends to be what people think I do.

I shape deals and deliver consulting projects. I'm middle management in my organisation.

I also like to think I'm neither useless nor evil - but I'm fully aware that my job has a reputation.

I may not be in a position to answer absolutely any question about all types of consulting work - but I'll give it a good try.

ETA: in case the above sounded too negative:

I'm also aware it's a career many young people aspire to get into but that has a rep for being extremely hard to get a foot in.

So AMA about that, too, if you wish.

How much are you paid?

@waterandlemonjuice, I don't actually know exactly. At my current level: somewhere or other above 100k and some odd ones. Plus a very decent bonus (20-30 percent of my base salary normally) plus pension and some additional perks. No commission. I'd be loaded if there was sales commission.

Starting salary fresh out of uni was decent but nothing that would blow your mind.

Supervisor/lower management level was when I stopped actually knowing exactly how much I made - i.e. enought for me to feel secure that I wouldn't have to worry ever again.

If I survive for another two promotions, I'll be making truly obscene figures.

I feel very ambivalent about the latter part. Yes, most (but not all) of our partners are extremely good. I don't personally feel anyone should be raking in more than half a million pa, though. That's just ridiculous and nobody needs that much!

... never mind the multi-million paychecks. Those are simply ludicrous and should be illegal IMO.

Nobody needs that much money.
