Why did you come here?

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 23/07/2018 08:00

Obvious question, why did you migrate to Britain?

DammitOedipus · 23/07/2018 08:04

I came here because my then BF (now husband) is British and was still in Uni.

From Canada? Silly sausage. Grin

DammitOedipus · 23/07/2018 08:10

No kidding! Although some parts of the UK are beautiful!

All I can think of to say is... you must really miss Canada?! Not that I’m negative about the UK- it’s my home and I love it. But I do think Canadians enjoy a better quality of life than we do, on the whole!

Which part of Canada are you from? I have visited Ottawa and Montreal (very long time ago) and Vancouver much more recently (which is one of my absolute favourite places in the world).

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 23/07/2018 08:33

I have never been to Canada (there is an excellent documentary on Canadian culture on Netflix, I cannot remember the title but it's very funny). I have very distant relatives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

What do you miss about home?

DammitOedipus · 23/07/2018 08:37

Canadians do generally have a better quality of life - I would like to go back one day. Work pays significantly better in Canada, especially jobs like teachers, nurses, and police. There is also a lot more respect for people in those positions.

I am from just outside of Toronto. I'm not at all keen on Toronto in particular. I find it often smells of garbage and sewage. Other parts of Ontario are beautiful though, especially Muskoka!

I miss pizza shops where you can just buy a slice. I also miss the cafes. Coffee shops are open until nearly midnight, and I miss a late night coffee date with friends. Lakes clean and warm enough to swim in are another one I really am missing this summer! And snow. I'd take the snow any day.

I will look up the documentary!

Canada was probably the last place I expected you to say you were from.

I did the opposite!

TheQueef · 23/07/2018 09:07

Sorry to see the news from Toronto Sad

Being a proud Yorkshire woman I'm already smug that I live in the best place, I'm told Canada is similar to Yorkshire so it's on my bucket list. If you miss Canada pop to Filey, you won't know the difference.

DammitOedipus · 23/07/2018 10:10

Yeah, lots of shootings lately, which is strange and really sad. I will have to check out Yorkshire!

I’ve been to Filey many times. Was never -45 with the windchill though!
