I'm a hijab wearing Muslim woman, ask me anything!

Happy to answer all questions, but most comfortable with questions about my experiences - I can try to answer questions about Islam but am no expert, and other Muslims may hold different opinions.
I'll only be checking the thread intermittenty, so my answers might not be immediate.

Why do you wear a hijab?

Maidsrus · 12/07/2018 19:07

Are you not roasting in this weatherGrin

And would you even wear it to weddings etc? My close friend is a muslim and loves buying multiple glamorous outfits for weddings! It does cost her a fortune though!

SockEatingMonster · 12/07/2018 19:08

Hi OP, I'm interested to know why Allah wants you to wear hijab?

hijabijabi · 12/07/2018 19:09

Because I believe it to be a requirement of Islam - there are many benefits, but utimately, that's my reason. I like it as it identifies me as Muslim.

Do you wear one that covers your face or just your hair?

UrsulaPandress · 12/07/2018 19:11

Presuming it is your choice to wear it, what made you make thelat choice and at what age did you put it on.

Also, and forgive me if this is a really stupid question, but how do your children recognise you in public places?

SockEatingMonster · 12/07/2018 19:11

Oh I have another one, when you get home do you tend to take it off or leave it on as you potter round the house?

hijabijabi · 12/07/2018 19:12

Maids, no, if you choose the right fabric for the weather it's fine.
I wear it in any situation where there are men i'm not related to, including weddings.
Sock - the reason given by Allah is to be identifiable as Muslim not harrassed - I experience the benefits of both of those things.

Hi OP, why Allah requires you to wear a BLACK hijab , particularly difficult in hot weather in Middle East when men wear all WHITE costumes in the same very hot weather?

Blankscreen · 12/07/2018 19:12

How old were you when you started wearing the hijab? Have the women in your family always worn it? Did you feel pressured into it?

Do you think that Islam is a sexist faith against women.

Carecomplet · 12/07/2018 19:13

How do you feel about the massive increase in really tiny girls wearing hijab? I've recently seen girls sitting in pushchairs in hijabs, and a lot of the girls at primary school now wear them (and leggings and long sleeved tops under their school dresses). Has Islam in the UK become more conservative lately, if so, why?

Would you want your daughter to wear hijab, if you had / already have one?

What is your opinion on hijabi models (e.g for H&M) and hijabi entrants to beauty competitions?

Did you grow up wearing hijab, was it expected of you or did you choose it yourself? A lot of hijabi AMA participants say they chose it despute opposition from family.

Do you perceive that men treat you differently to non-hijabi women? Do they for example, assume you won't shake their hand, etc.

I am assuming you wear a headscarf, what else do you do to dress modestly? I have one friend who wears hijab and dresses quite plainly, no make-up or fancy headscarf styles as she wants to not draw attention to herself but I have another friend who still covers up her hair but also takes a lot of pride in her appearance and dresses very stylishly.

Do you live somewhere where there's lots of other hijab-wearers?

Thank you for this ama Smile

hijabijabi · 12/07/2018 19:14

Sorry I should have said, the hijab covers the hair, neck and chest. I don't wear the face cover which is called the niqab.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 12/07/2018 19:14

Whoops. Realise I've mixed up hijab with niqab

UrsulaPandress · 12/07/2018 19:14

X post.

BobblyBits · 12/07/2018 19:15

I have a lot of respect for my friends who wear hijab. I often see a religious Sikh lady who wears her turban and a Muslim lady who wears Hijab who work together walking in our village, often sitting on a bench in their lunch breaks. It’s beautiful. Stunning and so heart warming. I applaud their strength and faith.

hijabijabi · 12/07/2018 19:16

Sock - I whip it off as soon as I'm through the door!
Fucking - i don't wear black it looks dreadful on me, no Islamic requirement whatsoever for women to wear black, that's a cultural thing.

Sounds like me and my bra, hijabijabi! Wink

Thanks for answering my questions.

fontofnoknowledge · 12/07/2018 19:24

If you were to decide for whatever reason, to stop wearing the hijab. Would your family find that acceptable ?

ApplesTheHare · 12/07/2018 19:25

I grew up in a community with lots of lovely Muslim friends and neighbours but my little girl is growing up in a predominantly white British village. She's very curious about ladies wearing hijabs but I was totally stumped when I tried to explain why you wear them. I don't think I'd ever given them much thought, and certainly not enough to simplify it for a child. How would you explain hijabs to a 3 year old?

Sparklyshoes16 · 12/07/2018 19:44

What do you think to Muslim women who don't wear a Hijab and go to nightclubs (two of my best friends do)? One is in a mixed faith relationship & raises their child as Muslim the other doesn't and isn't in a mixed faith relationship but both women practice as Muslim.

Do u ever think you would not wear a Hijab?

GorgonLondon · 12/07/2018 19:48

Did you have a Muslim upbringing within a predominantly Muslim community, or are you a convert from a different background?

WaitrosePigeon · 12/07/2018 19:50

Women that wear a hijab have been raped, so how does the harassing thing work?

FuckingHateRain · 12/07/2018 20:21

Saudis don't wear black abaya?

hijabijabi · 12/07/2018 20:23

blank - i wasn't brought up in Muslim family, I converted as an adult, and started wearing hijab about a year later (the time in took me to pluck up the courage!). So no, no one in my family wears it, and I wasn't under pressure
No, I don't think Islam is sexist against women - but it does acknowedge the differences between men and women. Many cultures are sexist and wrongly use Islam to justify it.

I’m interested in the modesty thing too.
How far to you personally take modesty?? Just the hijab and then conservative western clothes?
I have a friend who is possibly one of the most stunning women I’ve ever seen! She chooses to wear a hijab, but wears more or less the same clothes I would wear (jeans, pretty top, light cardigan etc), and really goes to town on her makeup and jewellery. Do you dress like western women and wear a hijab, or do you dress very modestly and forgo the makeup/jewellery etc?
Is there any specific rules about that?
