I'm a farmer. And I have a colostomy. Ask away.

Are you in NI?

SecretSquirreller · 10/07/2018 22:59

What type of farming do you do?

Jengabrick · 10/07/2018 23:03

Are you an arable farmer? If so how has this weather affected you this year?

RepealRepealRepeal · 10/07/2018 23:09

Not in NI.

I have sheep. I can't garden to save my life, so arable isn't for me. There's also beef cattle, but they aren't mine.

The weather is a mixed bag. It's nice to get some sun, but there's the possibility that the water will dry up. And unsheared sheep can get hot and itchy, so will roll to try to scratch, then they can get stuck on their backs, bloat and die. Mine are sheared now, but pre-shearing involved checking them three times a day.

Thought you were my cousin in law Grin We are veg (so is cil) and absolutely hammered with the drought. Also have some sheep, are you having to supplement feeding more with grass being burnt up?

Jengabrick · 11/07/2018 08:57

We have hay fields, the plus side is that they've been cut and baled already, the downside that our horses have run out of grass to eat. Praying for rain now.

Not supplementing yet. So far I've been lucky. Although one of my older girls will be on something pretty soon (no teeth so she's struggling with the grass).

I don't make hay. We did make haylage for the last few years. This year the first cut is silage. Second cut could be haylage though.
