I'm from a Romany gypsy back ground, but my family settled back in my nans generation, some 50 years ago. I loved listening to her stories growing up. To who ever asked earlier some gypsies do marry non gypsies as I am the product of that.

This is fascinating. There have been travellers near us and actually, despite people getting their knickers in a twist, there haven’t been too many issues.

How do I become a traveller? Do you ever accept people into the fold? Do you have bank accounts?!

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 22:25

mats/rugs i love them! got 7/8 sets keeps the floor clean throw them in the washer and there brand new again! especially living on sites where dust and mud is being dragged in
joyo buckets litterally as you describe them just very popular with travellers for cleaning up although i get mine out of a factory in bradford for £7
royal daulton dolls and crown derby just decorations for the trailers

Hey, let's do the coffee/cake thing. PM me and we'll get it arranged!

hendricksy · 10/07/2018 22:32

Why do the girls dress the way they do? There are quite a few round here and they all frankly look like hookers with loads of make up and tiny clothes . If they aren't allowed to have boyfriend etc why are they allowed to wear next to nothing? I don't get it .

Deadringer · 10/07/2018 22:32

Again I am going by the TV programmes but it always strikes me that the travellers featured on them always have strong English accents, they seem to have lived in England for several generations, just wondering why they call themselves 'irish' travellers. I don't mean to offend, I am Irish myself and they bear no resemblance in looks, accent, or lifestyle to the travellers I have seen all my life in Ireland. Do you have Irish grandparents, and do you visit Ireland when you are traveling?

SubtitlesOn · 10/07/2018 22:34

Sorry didn't put it very well, I didn't mean you personally

I meant when there are big gatherings like Appleby (which I know you said you didn't go to) or at a big wedding or funeral (which round here the funerals are huge events with hundreds of travellers from all over the place arrive to pay their respects) that the senior family members or whoever the ones who organise everyone or who goes where etc that they could decide that the 300+ or however many people arrive from 70+ different families could discuss the way that they behave in the future so that the experience the general public have of damage/disruption/mess changes

Or even on sites like yours where the families can discuss the collective behaviour when the families leave the site to travel etc

They might then be welcomed each time they turn up in the towns rather than the locals being anxious and fearful of what will happen during and after they have had been "invaded" and angry about the damage and human "mess" that is left behind

May I ask why you don't use the toilets in your vans? Thousands of caravans on holiday sites have toilets that everybody uses... we have an ensuite in our home - so that's essentially a loo in our bedroom?
And we have a WC that's off the kitchen. Millions of people use loos indoors.
I'm unsure why you don't?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 22:39

subtitles on - when i pull out like i said to lite and life missions just last month there was young boys skidding their cars and the pastor had words i believe they elders do if they see it happening but most of the time they dont listen

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 22:40

SmellyShoos · 10/07/2018 22:44

Do married travelers use contraceptives?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 22:52

smellyshoes if they dont want a child yes i was on the pill for a little bit but i had a constant period so went to the gp and she said they all would probably do the same so i came off it and now just use condoms some get implants some pill

HaveAWeeNap · 10/07/2018 22:53

Thank you for answering. That makes sense! I'm thinking of permanent caravan sites where the loos work just the same essentially as in a house Blush

SPOFS · 10/07/2018 22:54

Sorry if my question wasn't clear.

From the sound of it, travelers travel in groups of around 100-200. If someone in this group was causing problems and getting into constant trouble with the police etc., what would the rest of your group do? Would they ask them to leave? Or would they protect them from the police?

Dhalandchips · 10/07/2018 22:55

This is fascinating, thank you OP.
Do you know if the travelling community would feel about someone without your heritage wanting to join you? Is it actually possible to 'become' a traveller or is it purely by birth that you are one?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 22:59

spofs very rearly 100-200 more like 10-15 caravans just usually family/close friends so theyd either all be causing trouble them being xyz mother told me to stay away from or none of them
