Noticed the trend of career threads recently so thought I'd join in, always get loads of questions when my job comes up on here.

I'm a Nanny/Governess specialising in High Net Worth/ViP families - happy to answer any questions Smile

As someone who has children with somewhat unusual names, have you ever cares for children with names that you find embarrasing to call?

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 21/07/2018 00:16

OP, any chance you could dish more nanny dirt? Any horror stories?

I had nannies for just 4 hours a day for 6 months when I had twins so I could have one on one time with my older child. Even then I was surprised at how hopeless some of them were, and they were from a very good agency. Just missed out on a cleb nanny - she got snapped up quick!

Do you think you could ever just work in a normal, small house after so much luxury?

AnotherCareerThread · 26/10/2018 19:56

Sorry, didn't realise there were more questions. Probably a bit late now but I'll jump back on.

when you have one of these jobs, are you expected to basically be 'the parent' as in there 24/7 ...what happens when the child is in bed ? i cannot imagine the likes of the byonce or the beckhams then sit watching tv and attend to their child if it wakes and needs a drink or to go to loo ?

This is dependant on the job.
Generally speaking, there is a native Nanny (or Filipino/Indonesian/Chinese) who works either in rota with the English Nanny/Governess, or sometimes just 24/7.

Every* VIP role that I've had has been like this, usually a far lower paid (sadly) international Nanny is there for the night shifts and/or dirty work.

My new role (part the reason I've been AWOL so long is all the moving faff) is for a very very VIP family and has me for just 40 hours a week (3 afternoons and weekends) and a Russian Nanny from 9 to 9 two days a week, and mornings the other 3 week days. ie. The parents have the child by themselves overnight. This is unusual though.

I am very close to the Nanny of an extremely famous Olympian, and they have an international nanny for overnights.
Several of the Spice Girls do too.

The Beckhams I can't remember their set up (but David is soooooo lovely, the nicest man! Blush), off the top of my head Stella McCartney does nights herself (but it's been several years since I was connected to her so I can't really remember).

Have you ever had a job were you expected to finish in the evening and the parents just weren't around ? were travelling etc and you were left literally holding the baby ?

Yes, all the time. My current family are excellent, but the general rule is to NEVER plan anything for yourself EVER as a Nanny, as you will inevitably be late, if you haven't had to cancel it.

Do you know anyone whose ever nannied for Angelina Jolie’s children? Yes. But I don't know much and am not allowed to say what I do know, I'm sorry!

As someone who has children with somewhat unusual names, have you ever cares for children with names that you find embarrasing to call? Sadly, yes. But we're talking really really unusual names, the kind that are bordering on cruel. Some of them were trult awful when coupled with the surname, unfortunately I can't share though - just trust me, they were bad .

Do you think you could ever just work in a normal, small house after so much luxury? I would happily have traded in almost all my jobs (bar the one I have now I think) for a normal family. Problem is, there are far far more jobs with nutters than normal people, so at least these ones pay well Blush.

OP, any chance you could dish more nanny dirt? Any horror stories?

I can't remember what I've said and haven't said now. I had to get one of my male bosses arrested once, for child abuse.
I've seen so much cocaine etc in people's houses its unreal.

Most of the "dirt" is just about how horrendously people treat their staff. There was one (VVIP) family in the Middle East who encouraged their kids to wipe their noses on the staff. Same family would give the toddlers fistfuls of precious jewels to play with as party favour type things. The palace was full to the brim of hampers of expensive food that would never be eaten, huge huge baskets of fruit, gift hampers full of chocolate and caviar and God knows what - yet the Filipinos house staff were only permitted the cheap, unbranded food and often just ate leftovers when they had time during their 24/6 shifts.

This thread is great reading, I missed it back in the summer so just read it all now.

On page 1 you say you have a degree in Child Psychology. On page 11 you say you have no qualifications beyond A-level. Which is it?

AnotherCareerThread · 26/10/2018 22:47

xyzandabc that's me getting ahead of myself, I am studying for a degree in Child Psychology - so I have "BSc Child Psychology" on my CV followed by the expected end date (it's very clear it's an in progress qualification) but I actually made the decision to stop studying in September. I hate distance learning and I don't need the qualification, nor do I really have time to study. It's a shame as I'm only 90 credits from completion (and have actually done all the Child Psychology modules) but I hate it and I've just surpassed the deadline for fees, which means I'm now on the triple fee tariff.

OP you talk about all the cocaine you've seen. Do you think children were ever allowed to see it and if so, did they have any knowledge what it was?

JellyBears · 27/10/2018 09:57

I’m a nanny have been for 10 years have always considered high profile families I keep saying my next job!!

LondonT2202 · 01/11/2019 16:37

Hi. I am a journalist and would love to speak to the celeb nanny on this post for some researchI am doing. Would it be possible to email you?

JeffreeStar · 21/11/2019 09:15

@LondonT2202 She’ll have signed a confidentiality agreement. So anything she tells you could be liable.

Mamabear1988 · 23/11/2019 07:49

This is so interesting!

Bella2020 · 19/03/2020 16:58

I know it's an old thread, but had to say how fascinating I found it! If I'd seen it at the time, I would have asked the OP if she came across, or heard about, any/many instances of the parents secretly using a surrogate to carry their child. I imagine this is more common than we'd realise.

WingingWonder · 05/05/2020 23:28

I’d love more on this too!!

HeyBippy · 07/05/2020 00:34

This made for an interesting read, thanks OP.

Are you still about?

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 08/05/2020 08:25

Can you describe your average day?

motherofdinosau · 12/05/2020 18:29

Have you worked with/for any of the Kardashians? Or know someone who has?

rosiepony · 13/05/2020 15:15

I used to nanny about 25 years ago when my DD was a baby, and I hung out with a lot of the nannies from the Primrose Hill set. Lots of cocaine is all I’ll say and often given as a tip to the nanny at the end of the week.

Shortfeet · 14/05/2020 07:15

What an interesting old thread. I wonder where OP is now.
@AnotherCareerThread are you out there ??

Fliss689 · 16/05/2020 09:14

Absolutely brilliant thread! OP I’m intrigued to know how you are doing now?

drspouse · 19/05/2020 14:48

One Saudi family i worked for told me that it was Middle Eastern culture to "keep children as children for as long as possible" which was achieved by doing everything for them.
I was an au pair in Greece one summer. I was expected to spoon feed the 8 year old; v similar culture.

drspouse · 19/05/2020 14:57

Sorry I also didn't notice it was old but would love an update.

BearBearBearBear · 27/05/2020 16:34

Bloody fascinating!

ac1302 · 16/06/2020 14:50

What kind of weekly/yearly rate of pay are you on with these kinds of clients?!
