Best dumb phone for kids

Dumb phones, brick phones, feature phones…whatever you call them, the mobile phones of days gone by are back in vogue.

In case you haven’t heard of a dumb phone, these are basic mobile phones with limited functions, and certainly none of the bells and whistles you would find on a modern smartphone.

Dumb phones typically only allow users to make calls and send texts (and perhaps play Snake if you’re lucky), but don’t come with internet access, GPS, or social media. While it’s true they may not win any style points with older children, if you have a tween who is just starting to go to the shops or walk to school on their own, a dumb phone helps to give them a sense of independence while knowing they can get in touch with you. And of course dumb phones are good for parental peace of mind too.

Nokia 105 with a Giffgaff SIM and [...] an AirTag or similar stuck on back. There are a few games like Snake on it but nothing of significance.

Nokia 105 is talk, text and FM radio. It doesn't have a camera. The battery lasts for days. It costs under £20 and that often includes £10 credit. I gave my DD a previous version when she was eight, and only got her a smartphone during lockdown. When she started secondary she said everyone had smartphones. By half term she told me she was glad she had a dumb phone: "smartphones just cause drama". School do so much through internet, even in class, but my DD has never taken her smartphone to school.

Our verdict

When it comes to choosing the best dumb phone, there is one brand that is mentioned time and time again on the Mumsnet forums and that's Nokia.

Back in the day, Nokia was known for making virtually indestructible mobile phones with batteries that would last for days before needing a charge. And it seems that hasn’t changed, with the 2023 Nokia 105 offering an incredible 22 days of standby from a single charge.

The Nokia 105 has space for up to 500 SMS messages and 2,000 contacts (although how many 10-year-olds know that many people?!) and comes with wireless FM radio, a torch function and the classic game Snake. Other games are included on the phone, but you will have to pay if you want to use them.

Some previous buyers have pointed out that the buttons are on the small side, but little fingers should be able to handle these with ease. Overall, the Nokia 105 is a great first phone for younger kids, or for an adult wishing to unplug from social media and constant online access.

Our verdict

If you are looking for something a little more advanced than the Nokia 105, the Nokia 2660 Flip Feature Phone is well worth considering.

This particular non-smartphone comes with 4G network capability, MP3, a 0.3MP rear camera and an expandable memory up to 32GB when using microSD card slot. The flip-functionality for answering or ending a call with a simple flip is pretty cool too.

With its large screen and big buttons, the Nokia 2660 Flip is a great choice for older people who may struggle to find their way around a smartphone and its Hearing Aid Compatibility and emergency button, which can contact up to five people, are great additional features. And the 2660 comes with Nokia’s epic battery life too.

Nine-year-old grandchild has a Doro 1380, not a smartphone, can call and text, there's a rubbish camera. It is absolutely fine for her to contact or be contacted in an emergency which is all she needs it for.

Our verdict

You may think Nokia has cornered the market in the best dumb phones, but Swedish brand Doro also makes some quality non-smartphones with a battery life to rival the very best Nokia dumb phone.

The Doro 1380 is a basic dumb phone that can make and receive calls, send and receive text messages, play FM radio and take photos with its 0.3MP camera.

The phone is designed with older people in mind, with a large screen and buttons, plus an assistance button on the back that will automatically call and send an SMS alarm to pre-selected contacts when pressed. Those who have bought the phone for older relatives say is easy to use, sturdy and reliable, which are exactly the qualities you want in the best dumb phone for kids too.

Nokia 6300, one of the few dumb phones with WhatsApp (but also Facebook and YouTube).
See Post
Our verdict

More of a quasi-dumb phone, the Nokia 6300 bridges the gap between feature phones and smartphones.

Unlike other dumb phones, the 6300 comes with a few basic apps, including Facebook, YouTube, Google Maps and WhatsApp, minus the video and audio call function, for quick and easy communication. The phone does come with WiFi connectivity, but this has received very mixed reviews.

As a starter phone for kids, or a backup phone for adults, it's worth the £130 price tag. But if you are looking for a first smartphone for a birthday or Christmas present, you may be better off spending extra money on a smartphone that does more, and more quickly too.

We got our DS a Nokia 3310 in Y6 because he was walking home from school and needed to be able to call us.

Our verdict

Now here is a real blast from the past. In 2017, Nokia revived its tough-as-diamonds 3310, the phone that gained cult-like status in the early noughties for its long battery life and for being virtually indestructible.

This iconic phone comes with a Micro SD slot, FM radio, LED torch and Bluetooth 3.0 with slam and the operating system of Nokia series 30 plus. The 2.4-inch polarised and curved screen window makes for better readability in sunlight.

Just like the original, the revived Nokia 3310 has a long-lasting battery, with 22 hours of talking time or you can leave the phone on standby for up to a month. Some previous customers who bought this phone say they feel the battery doesn’t last quite as long as advertised, but it is still streaks ahead of battery-zapping smartphones.

What is a dumb phone?

Also known as feature phones, dumb phones typically only allow users to make calls and send messages. Unlike smartphones, which aim to do pretty much everything, dumb phones stick to the basics and don’t usually include internet access or any social media apps.

Sometimes they have a low-quality camera, radio or very simple, retro mobile games (such as Snake). Dumb phones tend to favour an old-fashioned keypad, rather than the touchscreens that we have become accustomed to on smartphones.

What should I look for when buying a dumb phone for my child?

There are a number of things that you should consider before buying a dumb phone for kids.

  • What are you using it for? Are you looking for a simple phone for your newly independent tween to take out with them? For an ageing relative who isn’t too hot on technology but needs a simple method for keeping in touch? Or are you just seeking a social media detox? If so, a dumb phone is a great choice. However if you are looking for something that can prove useful for interactive learning in the classroom or your child needs a bus or train timetable app to get around, then you a smartphone may be a better option.

  • Type: Would you prefer an old-fashioned ‘brick’, also known as a candy bar phone, or would a flip phone, where the device effectively folds in two, be better suited to your needs?

  • 2G or not 2G? Many mobile providers still provide 2G networks, which work perfectly well with dumb phones. The exception is Three, which includes iD Mobile, Smarty and Superdrug Mobile. According to Ofcom, all the mobile providers have confirmed to the Government that they don’t plan to offer 2G services beyond 2033 although, as of yet, no dates have been set for the switch-off. EE has said it will switch off 2G ‘later this decade’. You can buy a dumb phone with 4G capability, but this may cost you a little more.

  • Price: A big plus for dumb phones over smartphones is cost. The cheapest dumb phone on our list will leave you with change from £20. Good luck bagging an iPhone for that price.
