Our verdict
Toddlers and water play make a great combination, so bringing a watering can along on holiday can provide hours of multi-purpose entertainment, providing fun at the beach as well as in the bath or swimming pool.

What we don’t like:

“They are never too young for Pétanque (boule), you can take those plastic coloured sets that work on the beach, but we bought a decent set in France of the weighty metal balls and used them for years.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user Milliways)
Our verdict
A classic toy many of us may remember from our own childhood, boules (otherwise known as pentaque) provides hours of family fun both at home and away. Whilst it’s heavier than some beach toys due to the weighted balls, this carry-along Boules Set makes an enjoyable, portable beach game to both watch and play, creating a shared experience for the entire family from young children to grandparents.
The rules are really simple, pop out these brightly coloured weighted balls from the handy carry case and roll the small white jack. The aim is to get your coloured balls as close to the jack as possible, carefully judging the distance and location to ensure accuracy.
In a game of skill and concentration, you can expect some fun camaraderie between players, but don’t get complacent, even when you’re in the lead, a forceful roll from your competition can quickly knock you off the top spot.

What we like:
Twist on a game of throw and catch
Takes up limited luggage space
Suitable for the whole family
What we don’t like:
We’d love to have seen a spare ball included with the set
Balls can be a bit tricky to pull off the velcro for younger children, especially when the set is new
What Mumsnet users say:
“We have a velcro ball and handbat set. The type that catches on the mat. We've had hours of fun with it, and it takes very little space” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Almostthere15)
“My nine-year-old likes kites, building increasingly intricate sand castles, body boarding, swimming, exploring rockpools with a guide to identify things and playing with those velcro ball and catcher things.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Stompythedinosaur)
Our verdict
If your children love playing catch but are yet to master their technique, this Velcro catch set is great for improving their confidence.
An easy-to-play catch game suitable for the whole family, the set includes two large velcro paddles and a ball. Strapping the paddle over one hand, you simply throw the brightly coloured tennis ball to your opponent, who will aim to catch the ball with their sticky paddle, before pulling the ball away from the velcro and throwing it back.

Things to consider when buying a beach toy
With so many beach toys to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start, here are some things to consider when selecting the right beach toy for you and your family:
Age appropriateness - Most beach toys are suitable for children aged three plus, so if you’re buying for a younger child, pay close attention to the recommended age to ensure there are no small parts or choking hazards for babies and toddlers who may be prone to putting toys (and sand!) in their mouth. For older children, it’s worth considering how long the toy will hold their attention. Games and more active toys tend to work well for juniors, tweens and teens.
Portability - How big is the toy? Is it lightweight and easy to carry? Does it fold flat? How much space will it take up in your luggage or car boot? Consider not only how easy the beach toy is to transport, but how easy it is to carry down to the beach on your arrival.
Safety - Is the beach toy made from non-toxic BPA plastic? Are there any sharp edges? Does it need adult assembly or supervision during use?
Durability - Children aren’t always gentle with toys, especially when digging or playing in the sand. How durable and hard wearing is the beach toy? Can it withstand some rough handling or will it snap or break on first use? Some beach toys whilst fun to play with in the sand, aren’t robust enough to withstand the pressure of being used as a spade.
Shared experiences - Is the toy suitable for the whole family to play together? Toys and games that encourage shared experiences are a great way to make memories with your family during your trip to the beach, so look out for toys that offer simple and easy-to-understand gameplay.
Cost - How much are you willing to spend? Some beach toys are available at a very budget-friendly price, whilst other more involved sets come with a higher price tag. Consider how long your child will play with it compared to the price and whether the toy can be shared with siblings or other family members.
What’s the best beach toy to buy?
Whilst the best beach toy for you will depend upon your children’s age and preferences, we feel you can’t beat the classic bucket and spade set when visiting the beach with your family.
Unlike the bulky and rigid buckets of days gone by, these collapsable buckets from ThinkMax can be flattened down for easy transportation when not in use. The set also comes with a rake and shovel for hours of endless fun in the sand.
