The VonHaus in stick mode (L) and handheld mode (R)
On first use, I couldn’t help but notice the striking resemblance between the VonHaus and a toy vacuum. It’s smaller and feels flimsier than some of the pricier models I’ve recently tested - like the Dyson V16 Piston Animal or the Gtech AirRAM 3 - which is a good reminder that, when it comes to build quality, you often get what you pay for. That said, I’m probably being a little unfair. Those models cost £750 and £400 respectively, while the VonHaus comes in at a mere £40 - and for that price, it actually impressed me a lot more than I expected.
Thanks to its compact size, the VonHaus is wonderfully lightweight (just 2.5kg!). It glides smoothly across the floor, and those little wheels made zipping around my flat nice and easy. There’s no fiddling around with settings or modes, either - it transitions from hard floors to rugs with no extra effort required. The 1.3L capacity is also pretty generous for a stick vacuum, meaning you can get through a few cleans before it needs emptying. It doesn’t hold quite as much as a traditional upright vacuum, but for everyday touch-ups, it’s more than enough.
Switching to handheld mode is straightforward - it’s a smooth transition, though you do feel a little jolt of force when you turn it on! The included attachments - a crevice tool, upholstery brush and extender tube - are handy extras, though being corded does mean you don’t get quite the same freedom as a cordless handheld.
The only small annoyances in terms of ease of use were having to bend down to switch it on and the cord occasionally getting in the way, though the built-in hook helps manage it. The narrow floor head also means it takes longer to clean larger areas than some other vacuums, and the chunky base stops it from getting right under low furniture. All in all, though, it’s pleasingly simple to use day-to-day.
