The Thule Elm i-Size toddler car seat marks an impressive debut for Thule in the toddler car seat market, combining premium Scandinavian design with genuinely reassuring safety technology. Michaela, who tested the car seat for two months with her 14-month-old, described it as “excellent quality, very robust and a seat that’s built to last".

The Thule Elm allows for extended rear-facing travel up to around age four (40 to 105cm). This is longer than the 15-month minimum required by i-Size standards as laid out in the latest car seat laws and regulations, though not quite as long as seats like the Axkid One 3, which can accommodate children rear-facing up to age seven. Still, this extended range will cover most families comfortably through the toddler years and is in line with most other extended rear-facing toddler car seats on the market.

One of the standout aspects for Michaela was how comfortable her daughter seemed in the Thule Elm from day one. The seat’s generous padding and large headrest kept her child secure, especially on longer drives. “It feels really solid once it’s in place,” she told us, noting that the build quality gives instant confidence every time she straps her daughter in.

The EasyDock system makes attaching the seat to the Thule Alfi ISOFIX base simple and intuitive (you just lower the car seat onto the base, and it automatically clicks and locks into place with an audible and visual confirmation), while the SenseAffirm feedback lights take the guesswork out of installation, giving parents a clear green signal when everything’s safely locked in.

Like other 360-spin car seats, the Thule Elm has a 360-degree rotation feature which is another big plus for everyday use, making it easier to lift children in and out.

While a built-in sunshade would be a welcome addition and the seat’s weight means its best left installed rather than moved between cars, these feel like small trade-offs for the level of quality, comfort and peace of mind on offer. For parents looking to add extra protection on bright days, a set of car sunshades for babies is a simple and effective accessory to pair with the Thule Elm.

How we tested the Thule Elm toddler car seat

  • Tested with a 14-month-old toddler for two months

  • Used daily for short nursery runs and longer weekend trips

  • Tested in a VW Polo

  • Left installed in one car due to seat weight

Michaela tested the Thule Elm across a variety of everyday situations, from quick trips to nursery to longer drives. While the seat is sturdy and reliable, its weight (7.7kg) makes moving it between vehicles less convenient, so Michaela kept it permanently installed in her VW Polo.

This car seat features three recline positions plus an adjustable headrest and harness, making it easy to adapt as children grow. After testing, Michaela scored the seat across eight key criteria from installation and ease of use to comfort and safety, producing a total score out of 100 and an overall star rating out of five.

  • Thule Elm toddler car seat

  • Printed instruction manual

  • Digital setup guide with step-by-step installation videos

Unfortunately, the Thule Elm doesn't include the Thule Alfi ISOFIX base so that needs to be bought separately. There are also no additional accessories included. Additional toddler car seat accessories you can buy separately from Thule include a back seat protector and a baby mirror.

How easy is the Thule Elm toddler car seat to install?

  • Minimal assembly required out of the box

  • Took around 20 minutes to install in Michaela’s car

  • Easily clicks onto ISOFIX base

Michaela found the process intuitive and reassuring. “It was simple to get the seat in place, and the green lights gave me peace of mind that it was secure,” she said.

Thule Elm toddler car seat: how does it look?

Visually, the Thule Elm stands out for its sleek Scandinavian styling. The materials feel high-end, with a matte finish and subtle texture that blend well with modern car interiors. Michaela described the build as “excellent quality and very robust,” noting that it feels more premium than many other extended rear-facing toddler seats in its price range.

The seat itself feels solid and substantial but, when attached to the Thule Alfi ISOFIX base, the full setup is bulky - something to keep in mind if you have a smaller car. This model comes in three stylish shades - mid blue, light grey and black - all easy to match with the rest of your baby gear should you want to.

How safe is the Thule Elm toddler car seat?

Very. Michaela found the Thule Elm to be one of the most reassuring and well-engineered seats she’s used. “The car seat feels very sturdy and secure,” she said.

A standout feature is the Thule Elm’s safety credentials. It meets the latest i-Size (R129) European safety standard and achieved a strong ‘Good’ (2.2) rating from ADAC and Stiftung Warentest for its extended rear-facing version, placing it among the top performers in its class.

In rear-facing mode, the Thule Elm scored exceptionally well in independent crash tests and was praised for ergonomics, ease of installation and chemical safety – which simply means that the fabrics, foams, plastics and coatings are free from harmful substances that could be dangerous for children.

Built around Thule’s unique Impact Protection System, the seat combines a five-point, well-padded harness with a robust, energy-absorbing headrest to protect against frontal and side impacts. The EasyDock system locks the seat onto the Thule Alfi ISOFIX base with a simple click, while the SenseAffirm green lights confirm it’s installed correctly. Plus, we like that there’s a hidden release key, which must be pressed before the seat can be removed from the base, preventing accidental detachment while driving.

What's the Thule Elm toddler car seat like to use day to day?

During testing, Michaela used the Thule Elm every day for nursery runs as well as family day trips. She found that the 360-degree rotation made getting her toddler in and out of the seat much easier. The only downside is that it can’t be turned one-handed - you need to press the release button and rotate the seat at the same time.

She also appreciated small design touches like the seat's magnetic buckle holders, which kept the harness out of the way when unbuckled.

The Thule Elm weighs 7.7kg without the base, but the Thule Alfi ISOFIX base adds another 7.2kg, which brings the total unit weight to almost 15kg - heavy compared to other extended rear-facing toddler seats like the Axkid One 3, which weighs 10kg (base included).

While this means Michaela keeps it permanently installed in her VW Polo rather than moving it between cars, the extra weight contributes to the seat’s stability. “It’s not something you carry around but, as a fixed car seat, it works brilliantly for everyday life,” she says.

The seat sits at a comfortable height for her 14-month-old, and the combination of 360-degree rotation and adjustable recline positions makes strapping in much simpler.

How comfortable is the Thule Elm toddler car seat?

Michaela’s toddler seemed very happy in the Thule Elm, even on longer drives. “She’s so comfortable in it. The padding is really cosy and the headrest supports her perfectly,” Michaela said. The seat comes with a soft polyester comfort liner and plenty of cushioning, creating a snug, secure feel. The headrest and harness adjust smoothly without fixed steps, so it’s easy to tweak the seat as your child grows.

The Thule Elm has three recline positions - upright, resting and sleep, which is great for naps - although Michaela found that, in her smaller VW Polo, she couldn’t fully use the deepest recline. Despite owning a compact car, Michaela found that the Thule Elm fit securely in the back seat - though it does require the front passenger seat to be pulled forward slightly. Families with larger cars or SUVs will find the fit more generous.

Even so, the seat’s breathable fabric and generous padding mean her daughter could sit or snooze comfortably on every journey. “This seat is just the right height for my 14-month-old, and she seems to really enjoy looking out the window,” she added.

Is the Thule Elm toddler car seat easy to clean?

Yes. The fabrics wipe-clean with a damp cloth and the covers are removable for a deeper clean. The materials are of noticeably high quality, resistant to scuffs, marks and everyday spills.

Does the Thule Elm toddler car seat offer good value for money?

At just over £500 for the Thule Elm car seat and the Thule Alfi base, it’s definitely a premium option, but Michaela felt it earns its price tag. “Yes, it is good value for money. It’s very robust and sturdy.” What you’re really paying for here is the peace of mind that comes from proven safety performance and Thule’s typically solid engineering.

Undoubtedly, the Thule Elm feels well engineered, placing it in the same league as other high-end toddler seats like the Maxi-Cosi Pearl 360 Pro and the Cybex Anoris T2. And because the Thule Alfi base can be reused with future Thule seats, it’s a smart long-term investment.
