How we tested

Our tester Alison put the Russell Hobbs Quiet Super Steam Generator Iron 24450 to the test over the course of two months in her five-bedroom home. Taking detailed notes on the iron's user-friendliness, effectiveness against creases and how it compared to her standard steam iron as well as other steam generator irons, she tested the steam generator on everyday ironing as well as keeping on top of bedding for her Airbnb guests.

Our verdict

This mid-priced steam generator iron really impressed Alison, who said it really held its own when compared to the pricier Tefal Pro Express Vision. While the iron's quiet technology didn't make a noticeable difference to noisy levels, the iron is comfortable to hold, lightweight and glides easily across a whole host of fabrics.

With powerful steam, makes light work of even the toughest creases - whether used as an iron or a vertical clothes steamer. "As I have lodgers and Airbnb guests there are a fair number of sheets, quilt covers and pillowcases to iron," Alison says. "It was extremely economical with the steam/water. I also used it for t-shirts, dresses and to vertically steam a shirt. It took out the creases very well."

The iron's large water tank means it'll keep going for a long time, with plenty of oomph to tackle an ironing basket in one go. As more and more Mumsnet users are finding out, steam generator irons are much more powerful than standard steam irons, making light work of a chore 50% of Brits despise (YouGov).

All in all, this is a really good iron with a very reasonable price tag. While we were disappointed by the noise levels and it can't boast the smart fabric recognition technology premium steam generators have, when it comes to stamina and effectiveness, the Russell Hobbs Quiet Super Steam Generator Iron can definitely hold its own. Performing on a par with steam generators twice its price, if you're looking for a powerful workhorse to glide through your laundry, this is a brilliant option.

How easy is the Russell Hobbs Quiet Super Steam Generator Iron to set up and start using?

The clear and concise instruction booklet was easy to follow while setting up the iron. Alison found the water tank easy to fill from the tap, and really liked the little grippy feet that stop the iron from slipping when put down.

The iron does take a little while to heat up, due to its large water tank. "It takes about 3 minutes to warm up sufficiently," Alison said. "Which can seem like ages to start with but gives one a chance to make a coffee!"

Thanks to its powerful and copious steam, stopping fabrics from getting too damp during ironing can take a little bit of getting used to, but Alison got the hang of it very quickly.

Does the Russell Hobbs Quiet Super Steam Generator Iron offer good value for money?

By dispensing with the bells and whistles of smart fabric recognition technology, Russell Hobbs have produced a mid-priced steam generator iron that can perform pretty much as well as more premium models.

Sadly the quiet technology didn't make a noticeable difference to sound levels, and we suspect there's little that can be done about the sound of powerful, crease-busting steam being generated.

One thing to note is that the anti-calc filter needs replacing, and a replacement cartridge is £18 at the time of writing. It should last around 100 uses in soft water areas, and the harder your water is, the fewer ironing sessions it'll last before needing to be replaced.

To conclude, this is a brilliant iron at a great price. Alison said she'd recommend it to friends who do a lot of ironing, as the extra expense of a steam generator is worth it for the time and energy saved.
