Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner review: "an impressively hard worker for a bargain price"

I used the Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1 Cordless Vacuum for six weeks in my three-bedroom home, tackling hardwood, tiles, lino, rugs and carpet. With two long-haired teens, two dogs and two cats, I had plenty of hair, crumbs and general chaos to put it through its paces.

How I tested

I used the Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1 Cordless Vacuum over six weeks in my three-bedroom home. I vacuumed hardwood floors, tiles, lino, rugs and carpet. With two long-haired teenagers, two dogs and two cats, there was no shortage of hair to test it on. I also did a simple cereal test on hard flooring to see how it handled larger crumbs.

After six weeks of daily use, I think the Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1 is a solid, no-fuss cordless vacuum that suits busy homes on a budget. It’s not trying to compete with high-end models, and it doesn’t. But for the price, it performs better than I expected.

The standout for me is how practical it is. It stands up by itself, which sounds minor but makes a big difference when you’re interrupted mid-clean or prefer to keep it close to hand. It's not wall-mountable, so its ability to stand upright is a real plus when it comes to storage, it also folds in half, making it even more compact to store.

The integral handheld vacuum is also genuinely useful. I used it on the stairs, the sofa and even in the car, and I liked that I could remove the compact handheld part for charging, rather than having to position the whole unit near a plug socket.

Suction is good rather than amazing, but for £55, I was very impressed. On hard floors, tiles and lino it picked up dust, fluff and general debris easily. On carpet, it managed everyday mess but didn’t always lift embedded pet hair. In a house with two dogs, two cats and two long-haired teenagers, that’s a tough test. It leaves some hair behind, so if you’re used to a premium vacuum, you’ll notice the difference.

It left some crumbs behind on the cereal test, and took two passes to tidy everything up. Below you can see results after one swipe - not to be sniffed at, but premium models get the job done in one pass.

That said, the one-hour run time is impressive at this price point. I could get around my three-bedroom home on a single charge. The dust compartment is on the small side, so I had to empty it regularly, and you do need to be careful when emptying it as the filter can drop into the bin if you’re not paying attention.

Overall, I’d recommend it for pet-free homes or as a second vacuum. It’s easy to store, practical and good enough for everyday cleaning - an impressively hard worker for a bargain price.

How well does the Russell Hobbs Centaur deal with hair?

Hair is the real test in my house. On hard floors and tiles, the Centaur coped well with pet hair and long strands from my teens. A single pass usually did the job.

On carpet, it was more of a mixed picture. It picked up surface hair easily but struggled with strands that were more embedded. I sometimes needed a couple of passes, and even then it didn’t quite match the deep clean you get from pricier cordless models.

For everyday maintenance, it’s fine. If you have heavy shedders or thick carpet throughout, you may want something more powerful.

What’s the suction like on the Russell Hobbs Centaur?

For its price bracket, the suction is impressive. It handled dust, crumbs and general debris without fuss. In my cereal test on hard flooring, it cleared most of the mess in one pass and took two passes to get everything. That feels fair for a cordless vacuum at this level.

It doesn’t have the punch of premium brands, especially on carpet, but it’s good enough for day-to-day cleaning and quick whizzes round the house.

Is the Russell Hobbs Centaur good value for money?

The Russell Hobbs Centaur 2 in 1 is one of the cheapest cordless vacuum cleaners on the market. Compared to similarly priced models like the Beldray Airgility Cordless Vacuum, the Centaur holds its own with strong run time and the bonus of a detachable handheld unit. The fact that the it stands upright by itself is also a practical edge some rivals lack.

Against the even cheaper VonHaus Corded Stick Vacuum Cleaner, you’re paying more for the freedom of cordless cleaning. The VonHaus offers consistent corded power for less money, but you’re tethered to a plug socket and it’s less flexible around stairs and cars. If budget is your top priority and you don’t mind a cord, the VonHaus is good value. If you want convenience and portability, the Russell Hobbs makes more sense.

It’s not a replacement for a high-end Dyson in a home full of pets, but for the price, the Centaur 2 in 1 offers reliable everyday performance. It suits smaller homes, lighter cleaning needs or anyone after a second vacuum for quick, easy clean-ups.
