OXO FurLifter Garment Brush review: a revelation for hairy homes

If you’re forever covered in pet hair, this reusable brush promises a neater, less wasteful fix than lint rollers. I put it through its paces in a very furry household.

How I tested

I used the OXO FurLifter Garment Brush daily in a home with two terrier cross dogs and two cats, one short-haired and one long-haired. Pet hair isn’t occasional here, it’s constant. I tested it on everyday clothing, including darker fabrics where hair shows up most, as well as upholstery, flat rugs and carpet. I paid attention to how quickly it picked up hair, how easy it was to clean, and whether it genuinely replaced my usual lint rollers.

After years of using peel off lint rollers to deal with pet hair on my clothes, the OXO FurLifter is a revelation. The brush uses fabric pads to lift hair and, instead of peeling off layers or picking fluff off by hand halfway through, you dip it into the base. The base pulls the hair off and traps it inside until you empty it. Genius.

In practice, it’s very satisfying to use. I ran it over a jumper covered in fine white dog hair and could see a clear difference straight away. The arrows on the brush make it obvious which way to use it, which cuts out that annoying back-and-forth you sometimes get with fabric tools.

It works especially well on clothing and upholstery. Sofas, throws, jumper, jogger and coats all got a once-over - producing great results while feeling a lot less faffy than using a lint roller. Plus, there’s no need to stop and tear off a sheet or deal with a half-used roll that’s lost its stick.

Dipping the wand into the base feels like a magic trick (abracadabra and the cat hair is gone!), as it strips every last strand from the fabric pads, and only takes a couple of seconds. You can carry it around with you and use it at an angle if you're tackling a very hairy sofa, it doesn't need to stand upright to work, and it doesn't rely on gravity to pull the hair off either.

Emptying the base is simple enough. You pop the bottom off and pull out the collected hair. It’s not especially elegant. I did have to remove the contents by hand, and it’s basically a chamber lined with the same fabric that cleans the brush. Even so, that feels like a fair swap for not having to keep buying refills, and it collects an impressive amount of hair.

It’s less effective on deeper textures. On thicker carpets or rugs with a longer pile, it struggled to reach embedded hair. It works best on flatter surfaces where the fabric pads can properly grip.

Another niggle is its size - compared to disposable lint rollers, it's quite bog, and too big really to easily bring with you to work in your handbag or rucksack. It's not heavy, though, so if you have space then it's still an option.

For a household like mine, with a mix of fine and more stubborn pet hair, it’s become a useful grab-and-go tool. In the never-ending battle to keep pet hair under control, I reach for it a lot.

Is the OXO FurLifter good value for money?

Compared with buying lint roller refills over and over, this works out better in the long run. You pay more upfront, but you’re not replacing sticky sheets every few weeks, which gets expensive fast in a home with pets.

It won’t cover every job, especially on carpets, but on clothes and furniture it’s quick, easy to use and creates far less waste. If pet hair is a daily irritation rather than an occasional one, it’s worth having.
