Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size review: an infant car seat designed with a built-in carrier

Maxi-Cosi’s award-winning baby car seat makes moving an infant between your car, pushchair and home a doddle – but it comes with a high price tag. Parent tester and new mum, Alice, tried it out to see if it really is as easy as it sounds.

Our verdict

The Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 won a Red Dot award for its innovative design, so it’s no surprise that our tester Alice described it as a “very stylish” infant car seat.

The Coral 360’s stand-out feature is its modular design, which includes a removable inner “carrier” that can be taken out of the solid shell with your baby still fastened in. Weighing only 1.7kg, this carrier offers a more convenient way to move a child in and out of the seat, especially during the early weeks of recovery post-birth.

Although it can be fitted using a seatbelt, the Coral 360 is also compatible with Maxi-Cosi’s range of FamilyFix ISOFIX bases. When used with the FamilyFix 360 or FamilyFix 360 Pro base it has one-handed rotation that makes securing your child in the car even more straightforward. “Using the car seat with the ISOFIX base is a dream,” Alice told us. The Pro base also has a slide mechanism for even easier access.

Another huge selling point is that this seat is TÜV-approved, which means it’s suitable for use on the plane (although you will need to purchase a separate seat on the plane for your baby if you wish to use it). It’s also travel system-compatible with some Maxi-Cosi pushchairs. All these features led Alice to come to the conclusion “this car seat is a fantastic investment,” but it is worth noting that it has a short lifespan: it’s only suitable for the first year of your child’s life.

How we tested the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size

Alice used the Coral 360 with her daughter Olive when she was three months old. The car seat was fitted onto the FamilyFix 360 Pro ISOFIX base, giving Alice and Olive the chance to put the 360 spin feature through its paces too.

How simple is it to install the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size in the car?

When used in conjunction with an ISOFIX base, the Coral 360 is really simple to fit in the car. “It clicks into place effortlessly and feels rock-solid once it’s secured. No fuss, no stress – just a simple, secure connection every time,” Alice told us.

There’s also the option to fit this directly in the car with a seatbelt if you don’t have a base. This reduces some functionality (the seat will no longer spin and it may feel more fiddly to remove your baby from the car) but, provided it is fitted correctly, it will not affect safety while driving. Maxi-Cosi has a handy video to show how this is done.

How does the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size look?

Given it’s won an award for design, it’s no surprise this is an attractive car seat, and Alice praised the “great design” and attractive colour palette. The modular design and 12-month lifespan mean it has a more compact appearance compared to something like Maxi-Cosi’s Mica 360 Pro and it may be a good option for smaller cars.

Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size: is it safe and sturdy?

Alice felt that the seat delivered on its safety promises, describing it as “incredibly sturdy with excellent protection on all sides.” It complies to the R129 safety standard and has Maxi-Cosi’s Side Protection System so, in Alice’s words, “you can drive with peace of mind knowing your child is well-protected from every angle.”

The harness features the brand’s “easy-in” technology to make it easy to fit your baby. Alice said, “ The harness feels solid. The straps keep our child secure, and they won’t be able to get their arms out without your help.”

The lightweight soft carrier (just 1.7 kg) can be easily removed from the outer safety shell, allowing you to carry your baby without moving the entire car seat. When reattaching, the carrier locks back into the shell with both an audible click and a visual indicator to confirm it's securely in place. The shell then connects to the base.

While this modular design offers great convenience, it does come with a potential risk of misuse—if the carrier isn’t properly reinstalled, it could be unsafe during travel. Fortunately, Maxi-Cosi has built in safeguards like the sound and visual cues to help ensure correct installation. If the seat is shared between multiple caregivers, it’s important that everyone understands how to use these features properly.

How comfortable is the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size?

The newborn inlay is designed to provide support in the early months, and this seat is designed specifically with newborns in mind. Alice described the padding as “cushiony” and felt it was very comfortable for her daughter.

Alice also added that “adjusting the seat for different heights is very easy. The seat adjusts smoothly to accommodate our growing baby.”

Comfort for parents has also been considered with the removable carrier. Maxi-Cosi claims this can be used in multiple ergonomic positions for comfort. Just be sure to leave the harness fastened at all times so your baby is safe as they’re being transported.

What is the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size like to use day-to-day?

Alice says the Coral 360 is “perfect for long car rides or quick trips to the shop.” The lightweight, modular design is definitely created with convenience in mind and offers plenty of options for parents on-the-go, especially when used with a fixed base. Remove the carrier or the whole seat, depending on your preference.

Alice also praised the size and fit of the seat and how it accommodated her family. “It’s compact enough to leave room for other passengers or car seats, while still giving our child plenty of space,” she explained.

Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 accessories

Does the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size come with accessories and is it travel system compatible?

No, the Coral 360 doesn’t come with accessories, but you can purchase a range of accessories separately. The Coral 360 is compatible with a small number of Maxi-Cosi pushchairs using the car seat adapters (sold separately). Unlike some other Maxi-Cosi car seats, it’s not compatible with “universal” adapters that allow it to be fitted on other pushchair brands.

Compatible accessories for the Coral 360 include:

Is the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size seat easy to clean?

Yes! The covers on this car seat can be removed and machine-washed, and the rest can be wiped with a damp cloth.

Final verdict: is the Maxi-Cosi Coral 360 i-Size good value for money?

This is a premium car seat with a price tag to match, but Alice really loved it and said “With its combination of comfort, safety, style, and ease of use, it’s worth every penny. You’re not just buying a car seat – you’re getting peace of mind and a comfy, stylish ride for your child.”

To get full use of the features, it does make sense to invest in a FamilyFix 360 Pro Base. This increases the cost significantly, but once your baby outgrows the Coral you can upgrade to a toddler car seat from the same brand (such as the Pearl 360 Pro) and install it on the same base.

The lightweight, clever design makes this a great choice for first-time parents who are willing to invest in convenience as well as safety. These will likely be people who use their cars frequently and want a solution that’ll protect their baby while making their lives easier too.

For families who travel long distances, the option to use this on a plane may also be a good selling point.

Due to the addition of the lightweight carrier, this is also an excellent choice for mums who have had a C-section.
