Up until recently, I’ve been faced with whether I need to invest in pedal bikes for my two boys but to be honest, they’re as clumsy as I am and I still don’t feel they’re quite there yet. But where do you turn if your (larger than toddler sized) child isn’t quite ready for pedals and a larger frame?

Enter: Hornit’s 14″ Balance Bike.

Larger than your usual balance bike, this lightweight offering is great for older, taller beginner riders or kids who have outgrown their first balance bike or trike. It weighs just 4.18kg and has been designed for children with an average inside leg measurement of 40 to 53cm. In fact, both my three- and five-year-olds sit comfortably on it without issue.

The AIRO 14″ is made from ultra-tough magnesium alloy and has proper air-filled tyres - so it’s easy to ride (over different types of terrain) and carry! The bike also comes with a rear brake, which I think is a great idea as my eldest has already learned how to stop without using their feet during testing. The frame also has grip-taped footrests tucked in on either side of the bike that allow my boys to rest their feet while cruising.

As for rating it, compared to previous balance bikes we’ve owned, the AIRO 14″  is by far the best we’ve had to date. Although, I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t with a £189 price tag. But with this you’re definitely paying for quality.

It was very easy to set up, it’s light to carry and the rear brake is good practice for when my sons are ready for their first pedal bikes. I particularly love the yellow colour (you can also get it in bold Magma Red) as it’s easy to spot when we’re walking through our local woods.

Finally - my thoughts on the helmet. We received the Jurassic Kids Helmet. My eldest is dino-obsessed and so he was delighted with this choice. The fully adjustable ring adjuster is easy to use and ensure a snug fit, and the three-way adjustable chin strap and buckle helps to keep the helmet in place at all times.

How we tested the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike

  • Tested over several weeks with two children under five

  • Used regularly at home and outdoors for everyday play and outings

  • Tested in the garden, across a gravel driveway, on country lanes and in grassy fields at the local park.

We had just one fall (due to some distracted verge-crossing), but otherwise the AIRO 14″ handled all surfaces well.

Both children found the bike easy to steer and balance, with the built-in footsteps helping to keep their feet safely positioned during free riding.

During testing, I paid close attention to the AIRO 14″’s safety and ease of use, how comfortable my children were while riding, how manageable it was to carry for adults, its durability, and overall practicality.

What age range is the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike suitable for?

The AIRO 14” has been designed with older kids in mind - it’s great for pre-schoolers who have outgrown their toddler balance bike but aren’t quite ready yet for a pedal bike.

My boys, aged five and three, can both ride this bike with ease. For my youngest, it’s great as he no longer drags his feet along the floor while riding thanks to the footrests, and for my eldest - the rear brake is a welcomed addition to get him used to slowing and stopping without using his feet or while riding on an incline.

Hornit AIRO box and assembly

Is the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike easy to assemble?

Yes! The only tool needed for assembly was an Allen key, which was included in the packaging. So, everything I needed to assemble the bike came straight out of the box.

Hornit have also put together a handy video on how to assemble their AIRO balance bikes, with step-by-step instructions.

How does the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike look?

The AIRO 14″ balance bike has a sleek, minimalist design that stands out from more traditional balance bikes. The frame is made from magnesium alloy, which keeps it lightweight and easy for little ones to manoeuvre or for parents to carry when needed.

It has chunky, air-filled tyres that give good grip and a smooth ride, even on rougher paths. The handlebars are simple but sturdy, with soft grips that are comfortable for small hands. The saddle is adjustable and well-padded, designed to grow with your child and keep them comfortable on longer rides.

How would you compare the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike to others you’ve tested?

As a mum of two young boys, I’ve seen my fair share of balance bikes. Ever since each of them turned one, they’ve spent time on their balance bikes daily.

When they were smaller, we started with the Kinderkraft 2WAY Next Balance Bike for each of them, which, while affordable and lasted a good year, ended up breaking and the wheels fell off each of them.

Next came the Liferyder Vogue. Slightly bigger than the Kinderkraft and more robust, this versatile and stylish balance bike suited us well - until both boys went through growth spurts.

Hornit bikes, particularly the AIRO 14″, however, tops them all in terms of design, quality, style and longevity so IMO - even with the premium price tag - this one is worth buying.

Is the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike sturdy for children?

Out of the balance bikes we’ve owned, this is by far the sturdiest, which is owed largely to the magnesium alloy frame. Thanks to its design, it’s easy to carry and grip tightly and the properly air-filled tyres are tough.

Given the bike has been used daily during testing over the last three months by either boy, there’s little to no wear and tear. Only some dirt on the wheels, which is to be expected.

As for the helmet - due to said falling off, we were lucky our DC was wearing it as he did bang his head. But even then, the helmet was barely scraped and remained sturdy, protecting his head.

Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike: is it easy to store and clean?

Given it’s a larger size than your typical balance bike, families in smaller homes might struggle to store this in a child’s bedroom or your hallway. With that said, it is smaller than a bicycle and so if you have some outdoor space or a garden, it won’t take up a lot of room.

We store ours in our outside shed easily alongside other scooters and outdoor games the boys have .

As for cleaning it - it’s very easy when wiping it with a wet cloth. We’ve only needed to hose down the wheels once after a walk following rainfall. That was a particularly muddy day.

Is the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike good value for money?

At £189, it’s admittedly a lot more than you might want to pay for a balance bike - but the quality and design make it worthwhile. The fact it’s larger than your standard offering means it’ll last longer so has longevity - and will be a perfect ride for your DC until you’re confident that they’re ready for pedals.

Would you recommend the Hornit AIRO 14″ balance bike to other parents?

Yes, I would. I'm a big fan of products that offer longevity and would rather pay more upfront while my DC are still young, knowing the item will last for both of them for years to come. Given that this bike is suitable from three and a half years, I’m glad we’ll continue to get more use out of it as our youngest grows.

Hornit AIRO helmet

How well did the Hornit AIRO helmet fit your child’s head?

The helmet is perfect for my eldest child’s head and fits comfortably - he even finds it easy to put on and take off himself and knows how to adjust it using the ring adapter on the back of his head. Our youngest, at three years old, finds it a bit trickier and it’s slightly too big for his head.

Did your child find it comfortable to wear the Hornit AIRO helmet?

Our eldest DC happily wears the helmet for long periods of time on extended walks, even in the sunshine.

What did your children think of the design and style of the Hornit AIRO helmet?

Given our five-year-old is dino-obsessed, he absolutely loved the design. It’s nice that Hornit has a large variety of helmet designs to suit different interests for kids, from dogs to dinos and everything in between!

I find far too often that parents are limited with design choices and colours for kids’ bike helmets, so it’s nice to see a brand take this into consideration and actually offer some colourful yet stylish designs for kids to choose from.
