Best quiet kettles

If you're up before the rest of the house (or living with light sleepers), a roaring kettle can feel… antisocial. A quiet kettle keeps the peace - boiling fast with less rumble thanks to insulation and anti-vibration designs. For broader picks and buying advice, see our best kettles guide.

To build this list we combined Mumsnet user recommendations with MNHQ testing and checked for Quiet Mark recognition. We've also compared each pick to our best kettles guide and looked at value in the current cost-of-living squeeze. If you live in a hard-water area, you may also want our best kettles for hard water roundup.

Just want the hush-boil winners? See our at-a-glance picks below, then read how we tested and why each kettle made the cut. If you like a matching set, you might prefer these best kettle and toaster sets.

How we've chosen quiet kettles

We combine real-home MNHQ testing with firsthand feedback from Mumsnet users to find kettles that boil quickly with the least noise and are easy to live with day-to-day. We surface the tester, criteria and specific tests, and link to our How we test page for transparency.

What we do

In simple terms

Who tests

A named MNHQ editor tries each kettle in a real kitchen. We also factor in what Mumsnet users say on the forum.

Our main steps

  • Time a one-cup and a full-jug boil

  • Compare loudness side-by-side from the same spot Check how it pours, how the lid opens, how comfy the handle is and how clear the water window is

  • Use for two to four weeks to see limescale build-up and cleaning

  • Note Quiet Mark where relevant

  • Put this box just under At-a-glance for trust

What we measure

Boil times, perceived noise (and pitch), heat retention/outer heat (double-wall vs single), and energy-savvy use via one-cup boils so you only heat what you need.

Why it matters

Early brews need quick, quiet boils; hard-water homes need less faff with limescale; good ergonomics stop spills and overfilling (saves water/energy too).

What we look at on the kettle

Build/material (plastic, glass, steel), filter (mesh/Brita) and concealed element, water window and cup markers, base rotation and cable storage (left/right-hand friendly), plus warranty and multiple retailer options.

Our verdict

Tried and tested by Mumsnet editor Natasha Gregson: Read our in-depth Russell Hobbs Buckingham Quiet Boil review

The Russell Hobbs Buckingham comes highly rated in the Mumsnet forums, and despite its budget-friendly price, it really impressed Mumsnet HQ tester Natasha. This basic model is an easy-to-use, energy-efficient kettle that boils incredibly quickly, taking just 45 seconds to heat one cup. Natasha loved the clearly marked cup measurements, preventing water and energy waste when prepping an afternoon brew for one.

With a simple illumination during use, the diffuser ring on the base plate creates smaller bubbles as it boils – making it up to 75% quieter than previous models as a result. While some reviewers found it got noisier over time, Natasha felt it was one of the quietest kettles she has ever used.

There’s no fancy keep warm or variable heat settings on this model, however, with integrated cord storage and a removable limescale filter to combat hard water, you really can’t ask for more for the price.

Our verdict

Tried and tested by Mumsnet editor Natasha Gregson: Read our in-depth Russell Hobbs Purity Kettle full review.

If you're choosing a kettle for hard water areas, it’s not just quiet boiling that will be high up on your wishlist. Due to the high mineral content in your tap water, you’ll also want to seek out features that can prevent or reduce the buildup of unpleasant limescale.

The Russell Hobbs Purity Kettle could be a great solution. Not only does it run quietly, but the concealed heating element also doesn’t make direct contact with the water. Meanwhile, the removable Brita cartridge can enhance the taste of your tea and coffee by filtering out particles from the water.

Mumsnet tester Natasha put the Russell Hobbs Purity to the test in London – a very hard water area. While she found the visible condensation on the glass a little off-putting, she found no trace of limescale even after a month of testing.

Our verdict

Despite the eye-watering purchase price, you definitely get what you pay for with this stylish kettle. Mumsnet users and reviewers praise this brand for its longevity, with many claiming their Dualit kettles and toasters have served them faithfully for many years.

Made from stylish stainless steel with a hinged lid, this easy-to-fill kettle has not one, but two water windows, so you’ve no excuse for overfilling.

Their patented WhisperBoil technology minimises noise during the boil, while the anti-limescale filter performs effectively, even in areas with hard water.

Can you buy a silent kettle?

Unfortunately, there is no kettle on the market currently that is 100% silent.

By their very nature, as they boil your water, you can expect some vibrations, a hum from the heating element and an expulsion of steam once it’s finished. If you’re worried about noise levels, however, kettles with quiet boil features offer the quietest operation.

What is a quiet boil kettle?

Quiet boil kettles utilise features such as double-wall insulation, gradual heating, diffuser rings, or ‘quiet boil technology’ to minimise the noise generated during use. Some quiet kettles will also have Quiet Mark certification, independently tested and praised for their low volume during use.

Is a hot water dispenser quieter than a kettle?

Sometimes, but they’re slower per mug and take up more space. If you mostly make single drinks through the day, a hot water dispenser could suit you; if you want simplicity and a lower upfront cost, a quiet kettle wins.

What to consider when choosing a quiet kettle

Here are some things you may want to consider when choosing a quiet kettle for your kitchen:

  • Quiet noise level – Some kettles will list their decibel rating (with under 60dB being considered quiet). If they don’t look for the phrase ‘quiet boil, whisper boil or low hum, which indicates quieter operation. You can also look for kettles with Quiet Mark certification – these products have been independently tested for their noise levels.

  • Material and design – Do you prefer a glass, plastic or stainless steel kettle? Does the kettle have a matching toaster? Stainless steel kettles are more resistant to corrosion and water damage; however, plastic is often more affordable. Double-walled designs tend to provide more insulation from noise as your water boils. Short on space or heading away? A compact travel kettle can be a smarter fit than a full-size jug.

  • Suitability for hard water areas – If you live in a hard water area where your appliances are susceptible to limescale, look for features such as concealed elements or removable limescale filters, which can trap and remove impurities from your water.

  • Capacity and measurements - What is the overall kettle capacity, and is there a minimum boil level? A kettle that can serve six to eight cups is the most efficient when preparing for guests; however, clearly marked ‘cups’ and one cup boils are ideal for solo users working from home. The clearer the water gauge, the more control you'll have over water and energy consumption.

Are quiet kettles more energy-efficient?

Not by default. Efficiency comes from boiling one cup, clear cup markers, and decent insulation - all things many quiet kettles also include. If you’re upgrading small appliances to save on bills, our best air fryers guide covers the most energy-savvy cookers for weeknight meals.
