How I tested

I tested the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan at home during a cold snap, and over the course of a month in winter. Taking detailed notes on warmth, user-friendliness and heat distribution, I used an infrared thermometer gun to measure the temperature of the space in front of the heater after 10, 20 and 60 minutes on its highest heat setting.

When the summer comes, I'll revisit this review and update it with my verdict on the cooling abilities of the fan.

My verdict

A fan heater is a useful thing to have around during winter. They warm up quickly, blast heat around the whole room and many of them, like this one from Beldray, also function as a cooling fan - so you can use them all year round. Not that long ago, you'd have to shell out hundreds for a Dyson Hot+Cool, but now there are a number of more affordable options on the market, I was intrigued to see how the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan compares.

The fan looks sleek and modern - its white and silver design would fit into almost any home. It has a slim light around the base with four brightness levels, which I thought was a nice touch. It's quite large, so it's not that easy to store, but the fact that it's useful in both hot and cold weather means you don't really need to put it away when the seasons change.

It comes with a remote control, which I found myself using much more than the touch controls on the base of the fan. There are four fan speeds and you can set a target temperature - plus Eco mode will adjust the fan speed automatically to warm the room as efficiently as possible. There's also an 8-hour timer.

When compared to a Dyson Hot+Cool, the Beldray is less powerful and has fewer functions - however, it's also about a third of the price at £135. The Beldray doesn't have night mode or the ability to mute beeps, so while it's relatively quiet in operation, you can't adjust it to make it more sleep-friendly.

I found the fan effective at warming a room. The heat spreads quickly and evenly when it's oscillating, and it delivers a cosy blast when it's directed straight at me. When it's just me working from home, the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan is a speedy way to warm me up without turning on the central heating.

Does the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan keep you warm?

It certainly does. While it's not as powerful as the Dyson, the Beldray's four fan speeds range from a gentle breeze to a steady blast of heat, and it oscillates to effectively spread heat around a small to medium sized room.

After setting a target temperature, the fan gets straight to work. The air flow warms up quickly, and while it doesn't heat up the room quite as swiftly as the De'Longhi Dragon 4 Oil-Filled Radiator, it reached its target of 28°C within 20 minutes.

It warms you up quicker than an oil-filled radiator, infrared panel or convector heater, as the air is blown outwards (and directly at you if you turn off oscillation).

Is the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan energy efficient?

Fan heaters aren't the cheapest way to warm a room during winter, but they are one of the fastest. This fan has an Eco mode, target temperature and timer, so I was able to use it more efficiently than just having it on all day.

Eco mode will adjust fan speed to save energy without compromising on warmth. When a target temperature is set, the fan stays on until the temperature is reached, then switches between low heat and cooling fan speeds to maintain it. The timer means I can set the fan to heat for a set amount of time, and I don't need to remember to switch it off.

At 2000W, the heater costs between 50-70p per hour to run, depending on which heat setting you use. If you're looking for a cheaper and more efficient way to stay warm, your best bet is a heated throw like the Mia&Coco Heated Throw or an infrared panel like the INVO Curved Freestanding Infrared Heater.

Is the Beldray 2-in-1 Bladeless Fan good value for money?

For starters, the Beldray 2-in-1 is much cheaper than a Dyson. While it doesn't have all the same bells and whistles (and it's not an air purifier), it has the heating and cooling functions that make it useful all year round.

As you're basically getting two products in one, the price of £135 is very reasonable. A Meaco Sefte Pedestal Fan alone costs £180, so this heating and cooling fan is a wise investment that'll see you through both heatwaves and cold snaps.
