The Beko BDFN26440 is one of the best dishwashers you can pick up for under £400. With a good range of cycles, an intuitive control panel, and a large capacity, it's ideal for family homes.

While it may not be as feature-rich as an eye-wateringly expensive Miele, there's plenty of impressive functions — in particular, I really liked the self-dry feature that automatically opens the door at the end of the cycle to dry the dishes. The performance is great too; I love that the dishes come out really clean even on the eco setting.

There is room for improvement, however. The upper basket layout could be designed better to make it easier to stack mugs and glasses. I also think this Beko could be improved by being a little quieter, but overall it’s a really great machine.

How easy is the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher to set up?

The Beko dishwasher was reasonably easy to set up. We were able to do it ourselves without the help of a plumber.

It took a little bit of time to check the water hardness and to ensure that the machine was set up properly to accommodate for the extremely hard water in our area. The instructions weren’t very straightforward, and the dial that adjusts the settings is in a slightly awkward place within the main unit, but we had it up and running in less than an hour.

How easy is the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher to use day-to-day?

The Beko is very easy to use on a day-to-day basis. There aren’t a huge number of program settings, and while that means it doesn’t offer much flexibility or customisation, it does make running a programme very straightforward.

This isn’t a Wi-Fi-connected dishwasher, so you won’t be able to operate it with an app. There’s a standard on/off button on the front of the unit, buttons for each programme and then a play/pause control. The buttons light up when they’re selected to give added reassurance. An LED display shows how much time is left on the selected programme.

What features does the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher have?

There are six wash cycles to choose from. We use the eco setting the most. This is a 3 hour, 40 minute programme that we run overnight. It’s really effective at cleaning almost anything we’ve thrown in.

On a few occasions we’ve discovered some dried food on plates or a particularly dirty casserole dish that hasn’t quite come out fully clean, but overall it cleans everything very, very well.

The auto setting adjusts the time and temperature depending on how dirty the dishes are, which is pretty clever, and the quick and shine cycle runs for 30 minutes for a speedy spruce up.

There’s also a fast+ option which reduces the length of some cycles by increasing the water pressure, and a child lock to keep tiny hands from interfering with the cycle.

A time delay button can delay a cycle for up to 24 hours, but my absolute favourite feature of this Beko is the self-dry function which automatically opens the door when the programme is finished to allow the clean dishes to dry.

I would have liked to see a half-load programme, but apart from that the machine does everything we’d like it to do.

How well does the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher clean?

We’re really pleased with how effectively the Beko cleans dishes even on the eco setting. Glasses come out sparkling, cutlery and plates are very well cleaned, and even dirty pans and oven dishes almost always come out very clean.

Almost everything comes out dry too. Plates, pans and cutlery dry very well thanks to the self-dry feature. Tupperware doesn’t dry as well, but that’s because plastic doesn’t hold in heat as much as crockery or metalware.

Is the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher's capacity large enough for families?

Photos of the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher's top and bottom racks

This dishwasher is a really good size, it fits 14 place settings and offers plenty of space for a family household.

The upper rack adjusts to three levels, which offers a little more flexibility for what can be placed in the bottom tray. The plate supports on the bottom tray fold down too. Cutlery is placed in a basket, and there’s space in the top rack for larger items such as ladles and knives.

The top rack could be easier to load, however. The cup supports are a bit fiddly and when we loaded it with wine glasses, one smashed as we pushed the basket back into the dishwasher.

How noisy is the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher?

Overall the dishwasher is reasonably quiet, but there is a very high pitched ringing sound at the beginning of the eco and auto programmes. So whilst it’s not very loud, the frequency of the noise might be uncomfortable to people who are sensitive to sound.

Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher: overall style and design

There’s nothing particularly innovative about the design of this dishwasher, and whilst it doesn’t stand out, the simple design is clean and looks good in our kitchen. The buttons are nice to touch and the control panel is really clear. I like that it displays how much time is left on the cycle.

Is the Beko BDFN26440 Dishwasher easy to maintain?

There are symbols for dishwasher salt and rinse aid, that while not immediately obvious, once you get the hang of them are very easy to spot.

We’re in a very hard water area so we’ve had to top up our salt a few times. It’s very easy to do.

The rinse aid is a little more fiddly. I would have liked a slightly bigger compartment for the rinse aid so that it doesn’t spill out as much as it does.

How we tested

I tested the Beko BDFN26440 Full-Sized Dishwasher in a household of three over two months. In that time, we’ve run the machine over 60 times. We tested it with pans, casserole dishes, plates and glassware.
