Smear appointment reminder with a Mx

Have a routine smear booked at my local surgery and just received a reminder text saying it will be with Mx Firstname Surname.

I have no idea if this person is a biological woman or a biological man.

Can I call and ask?

Exactly. All this 'Mx' and 'Ms' bolleaux is just daft. Still obvious it's a woman! Or a transgender woman!

As you say, no MAN goes by bloody Mx. How the fuck do you even pronounce it? How silly! 😆

It's pronounced 'wank'.

Flowers4me · 03/07/2024 09:11

All the best OP and thankyou for bringing up an important matter. With a trauma background myself; this is difficult territory for me so anyone not being transparent with who they are would have had me cancelling the appointment. I doubt I would have called the surgery for fear of repercussions. As another poster highlighted, trauma can dysregulate your nervous system and cause you to react, sometimes unexpectedly and in ways that is difficult for us to control. Given the power dynamics between HCP and patient, it feels far safer to just not bother with such examinations.

Wow and they say they are committed to 'being inclusive' the irony! I'm gobsmacked that such a stance could be taken - let alone fought for - by a RAPE CRISIS centre.

I wonder who make up the board of directors because that is just so far distant from their target cohort, it's like animals voting to admit abattoir specialists as their pet sitting circle.

Mridul Wadhwa, the CEO of ERCC, is legally male [to MN admin - doesn't have a GRC].

The turnover of the board in the last few years, since MW's appointment, is a thing to behold. Majority of board are v young and inexperienced and, going on what was said at the tribunal, completely captured.

MW is still in post.

This damning judgment should be a wake-up call for the women’s sector - Sex Matters

I am pretty certain, OP, that Keri will turn out to be a biological woman. But you have raised important issues about womens' right to choose same-sex care.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/07/2024 08:30

Apologies meant to quote @ButterCrackers

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/07/2024 08:30

Agree. They should have a bag of blood leaking and sometimes flooding from their constructed vagina on heavy period mode and with pain for a week every month.

Don't give them ideas! Few of them have any surgery, btw.

Catsmere · 03/07/2024 08:06

If I saw a "Mx" I'd assume it was the usual bad case of Not Like Other Girls that enbies have, and I would be dubious about their competence.

Noquiet · 03/07/2024 07:45

I think transparency and trust are vital. It is a known and a usual thing for many women to have a female for intimate procedures. So put patients first by knowing that, and applying suitable signatures to any comms on appointments like this. Surely not hard! I feel it’s the same with the increased dialogue about physician associates and their introduction to a patient - putting your name and title physician associate ( or better - assistant) would be a start. Just a bit of clarity and factual transparency would go a long way. By all means be Mx if you want but if this negatively impacts those that said Mx is serving, surely you would apply avoidance and reduction of this risk.

What is ‘male to female surgery’? You mean a man removing his penis and testicles?

That’s not what a woman is

Agree. They should have a bag of blood leaking and sometimes flooding from their constructed vagina on heavy period mode and with pain for a week every month. The dna aspect can’t be escaped. For the op they have the right to see a woman doctor and if that means asking for someone who doesn’t identify as a man and has female chromosomes then at least they will see a woman.

I think it depends. Overall I'd be pretty unhappy with my cervix being messed about with by a man I don't know. On the other hand, I had a male midwife when DS was born and he was brilliant - though at that point a green and blue spotty alien with tentacles could have delivered my baby and I'd barely have noticed.

I have a friend who has been through the male to female surgery. I suspect that because of all the messing about they've had around their genitals they'd be very gentle and emphatic and leering or assault would be the last thing on their mind (luckily they work for the computer science department at a university so highly unlikely they'll be doing smears!)

But in other circumstances Id be very unhappy indeed and given how vague the surgery are being I'd share your discomfort OP

WomensRightsRenegade · 03/07/2024 07:15

Me lesbian teenage daughter arrived at a sexual health clinic to have a Mirena put in the other week (to help with crippling period pain) and was so traumatised when a male doctor came in to do it that she couldn’t go through with it

I asked my male gynae abroad this exact question. His mother died giving birth to his younger sibling due to lack of suitable maternity care. That is why HE because a gynacologist.

As long as he is aware that the majority of women would always rather be treated by a female gynae.

Ar our local private hospital there are 8 male gynaes and 2 female ones. The wait to see the females is 3 months or so. You can see one of the men tomorrow.

it’s very odd that gynaecology is actually male-dominated. If it isn’t for salacious reasons then I’m guessing there is a lot of money in it

Themaghag · 02/07/2024 17:41

But that isn’t really the point is it? Having a male doctor examine you, secure in the knowledge that you can request the presence of a female chaperone if you feel uncomfortable in any way, without anyone questioning it or taking it amiss, is one thing. Being intimately examined by someone who is pretending to be something they aren’t is another thing entirely. How would you know whether they were a post-op transsexual or an AGP chancer who was getting a cheap thrill out of having a crafty fiddle with you? No woman should ever be expected to validate any man’s sexual fetish and I’d go completely batshit crazy if I ever thought that there was any attempt to deceive or gaslight!

This is where I'm at. I don't mind male doctors at all, and have had one male gyno do a pap smear - he was far better than the first, female doctor who did one decades ago. But a man LARPing as a woman? Not a chance. I don't care if he's one of the tiny minority who've had themselves castrated. That's no guarantee that he's not an autogynephile. The fact that he sees "woman" as a costume is enough.

I will come back to the thread on Thursday evening to update

Suddenly thinking Mx Keri, is actually an older bio female trying to keep w the times (and not be mistaken for Karen).
please let us know when u meet her

CowboyJoanna · 02/07/2024 22:21

This is why I think female doctors should be called doctresses.
e.g. Drss Smith

RebelMoon · 02/07/2024 22:07

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 02/07/2024 22:02

And that answers OP’s question, perhaps.

Or, the surgery wants you to know that this person chooses to be known as Mx, and leaves you to draw your own conclusions.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 02/07/2024 22:02

RebelMoon · 02/07/2024 21:39

Because anyone who would want to use the title Mx is going to want to make sure EVERYONE knows they're a Mx.

Why did they need to put M(anything)? Wouldn’t Keri Surname have been enough?

Old Mumsnet thread.

TenarAtuan · 02/07/2024 21:37

Yes. Might just be a young confused woman who has got lost in the gender woo. I keep it basic. I'd like to see a female for that please.

Interesting. I've only ever experienced that level of inappropriate comment from female nurses. The gynaecologists I've dealt with have been unfailingly courteous and polite.

I'll let a lady doctor examine me. Never again shall a lady nurse ever do so.

Lady doctor? Have we time travelled back to the 1970s?

Lentilweaver · 02/07/2024 21:34

This thread is really unbelievable.

Across the world people are allowed to have same sex intimate care. Only in the UK and a few other captured countries, will women defend men doing pap smears, mammos, toilet duties, rape counselling.... because it might hurt their feelings or the feelings of their employers.

What’s your take on someone like Alex Drummond who is ‘redefining what it means to be a woman’? If he doesn’t epitomise prancing around in a frock, I don’t know what does!

I don’t know who that is but I’m thinking they’re not a highly qualified gynae consultant?
