Lots of goading around our choice to live here.

And going back to UK press coverage on it, social media and so
on the very many click bait stories of those revelling in the downfall and suffering of those who chose to move to Dubai = the mentality of many people in the UK who do not like seeing others succeed!

A few did passive aggressively show some concern

This thread is someone grinding an axe about the UK under the heading of AMA.

The lady doth protest too much.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 21/10/2026 15:06

@Puppylucky A great insight thank you. I wish you'd done the AMA.

And not doing a very good job, either, if her affluent area of London was really bedevilled by maniacs snatching children off footpaths in front of their parents.

britindubai · 21/10/2026 14:59

You appear to be very concerned about this? Which is fair as it affects the UK along with the rest of the world

We should all be VERY concerned. You clearly aren't concerned enough.

What happened in February isn't what is happening now.

You'd be mindful to reflect on this and how the situation has been slowly changing and how you are boiling like a frog in terms of normalisation.

Haha ok.

It did go off topic a bit and I did feel I had to explain why we made the choice to move here (and made comparisons) as of course it’s not just because it’s tax free but there’s no sugar coating that fact, that is why most people move here for sure.

Ok but what qualifies you to have any more actual factual knowledge than what I or anyone else has on any of what is going on in the world right now?

Must be true if The Guardian published it

This information has been widely published across a variety of news outlets including The Telegraph, Irish Times, The Filipino Times, CNN and LBC News.

You mean apart from a degree in media, politics and history and being able to tell the difference between a reputable sources and one that says thousands of children are getting snatched off the streets in the UK?

Apart from that?

I was a working woman in Dubai so can give you some insight @DorsetKnobBiscuit. It's quite tough out there . The working day is long and commutes are nightmarish. It looks like they have instituted WFH days on a Friday, but this has been forced on companies by the government trying to move the working week from Sunday - Thursday to the western model of Mon-Fri, without upsetting too many people, as Friday is the Muslim holy day.
The work culture is very Westernised, and women can and do work in senior positions. Work dress does need to be relatively modest but not extreme. Despite this, you will meet and work with people from different parts of the world, who are less familiar with and respectful of senior women, but you just have to grin and bear it.
Although Dubai is safe, I noticed a marked uptick in rude and aggressive behaviour towards me from taxi drivers and some retail / hospitality staff if I was on my own. A lot of the famed Dubai customer service is a veneer hiding a degree of anti western feeling.
Hope that's of interest!

@Puppylucky

It’s interesting to get your experience and perspective of your time here.

I must say I haven’t noticed any rude and aggressive behaviour from taxi drivers / retail / hospitality staff. (So far at least).

ok a degree brilliant that definitely puts you in the camp of you definitely know what is happening!

Had you said an analyst I might have believed you but journalism, I’m not buying it

you are also exaggerating what I stated, journalism at its best 👏🏻

Apart from being able to read and understand the foreign office advisories from the US, UK and various other EU countries and knowing they are fundamentally worse than in February?

Apart from that?

Apart from under the the Yemenis have now repeatedly bombed Saudi airports with numerous casualties, successfully more or less closing Saudi Airspace?

Apart from that?

Apart from understanding that the Yemenis and aided and funded by Iran who have also said they intend to target certain infrastructure like airports, water, power and bridges in an escalation that didn't happen in Feb?

Apart from that?

Apart from seeing what's going on in Russia and Ukraine and knowing that Data Centres and the Internet are targets and the Iranians have explicitly said they are looking at blowing up the internet cables in the Gulf of Hormuz if the attacks resumed?

Apart from that?

And this is ALL click bait?

Right.

Basic ability to check facts and find cases such as detained in Dubai before we decide on moving to a country?

you don’t really present yourself as someone who does much, if any, research or fact checking if you aren’t aware of news and information sources such as this one.

Gosh, OP, if you are in fact fantasising in a semi in Dagenham, you should definitely go to Dubai. You’re a natural at the kind of underthinking required. You’d fit right in.

As a tax paying professional in London and someone who doesn't have "a man as a plan" I would be much more interested in hearing a more realistic depiction of life in Dubai, salaries, culture clash, things to be aware, safety, laws, treatment of women in personal and professional enviroments etc... also if you get some sort of pension after all those years working in dubai? or is it transferable to your UK pension? are you paying NIC's to HMRC as to not mess your UK pension?

Real life working people stuff, someone lying by the pool all day reading the Daily news inside a wealthy people gated community being handed a credit card by her husband is not what I call a very "realistic" depiction of Dubai. I understand it may appeal to a small niche of western wealthy housewives living the same lifestyle but unfortunately not to me.

@toiletpaperthief

Re pension, when you leave Dubai, you are able to transfer the money you have put in, out. (I don’t know if you can have the cash or if you have to transfer to another pension plan).

I pay the short fall in my NI contributions to cover the years I am here. (Such a mission dealing with HMRC).

It is interesting meeting so many different nationalities and cultures. I’ve found most people to be friendly but it is tough seeing the construction workers and other lower paid workers. As I said before, most people here are doing the best for their families.

Right.

Haven’t said any of this is clickbait - as mentioned before it was around glorifying and exaggerating the truth on Feb events portrayed across many media channels predominantly from the UK.

Your points here are valid and most of those points have been going on back and forth for some time, before Feb

To be fair though OP many of the things you've said on here about world affairs are shaky/slanted/driven by 'what people are telling me' and when asked your sources of information all you've come up with is that the Daily Mail is 'all doom and gloom'.

Yeah, your opinion seems to be as long as your husband is raking in a ton of money, you’re more than happy to overlook the human rights and other problematic issues.

fwiw no, it’s not jealousy. I was offered several jobs around the world, including one in the US for £££££. However I fundamentally disagree with private healthcare, gun control and a few other issues, so I chose elsewhere.

never regretted it.

@Yetanotherone12

I’d love to have enough money to turn down a job here to honour my values, but sadly, those values will not keep me with a roof over my head in old age in the UK. By the time I get to pension age, I’ll be lucky if there is one, and as a single woman, I don’t have anyone to financially rely on. Actually, not even just in old age, given the property prices and cost of living crisis. So yes, I came here for the money. I don’t like some of what Dubai stands for, but I also need to think of myself and try and help others where I can here (which I do).

This is not directed at you but it’s easy to say you have morals/values and wouldn’t do this / that, when you have money in the bank or financial support.

A quick internet search turns up multiple worldwide reports of the events in Dubai earlier this year. They all contain similar information. I've found almost identical stories on CNN, CBS, Australian and European news channels and media.

Multiple countries issued No Travel warnings.

Why are you pretending this information was 'predominantly from the UK'?
