What are the negatives about Dubai apart from the heat and being away from family and friends? I mean in the place and the society. Everywhere has negatives

Edited

Ooh I guess I have to be careful here as I may contradict something I’ve already said!

Traffic is crazy and most people can’t drive so you have to think for yourself and everyone around you on the roads. The road system is slightly bonkers too, lots of one way systems, not easy to just turn around and go back as everything is a motorway/slip road to another motorway. If you go wrong you add a lot of time to your journey.

I don’t use the nanny/housemaids, as I’ve said before I don’t trust them, they are not qualified for the job, I enjoy doing it all myself.

No long term citizenship.

It’s a transient country so everything is temporary.

Poor air quality.

I thought jealousy breeds evil was an interesting choice of words too.

It actually comes from James 3:16 where the full wording is “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice”

Possibly apt for Dubai.

Good point! Mine’s been deleted! Op is allowed to say jealousy is evil, but I’m not allowed to say greed is evil too. 🤷‍♀️

If they delete me they're deleting Jesus's brother so hopefully mine will be allowed to stay 😂

I've genuinely on occasion wondered if Dubai was some magnificent satire. Faust for the filler generation. Carry on, OP. Earn lots and spend it all surrounded by some of the most hideous architecture in the world. Clutch that Chanel handbag close. It's worth it!!

As a top rate tax payer and not seeing much back for what is put into the system I can hand on heart say I have no issue keeping 100% of it.

You are talking about the UK right? A society with a failing health system, immigration problems, cost of living crisis and lack of defence system - honestly tired of paying into that for now!

ah, so you're from the "I'm alright Jack" school of thought, nevermind about anyone else.

You live in Dubai, I would never doubt that you have no issue keeping 100% of your income.

Health and education aren't perfect here but everyone has free access to them regardless of their financial situation and that's the kind of society I'd prefer to live in.

Hi @britindubai I reacted to your comment about jealousy breeding evil by saying that greed is also evil.

I’m another one who isn’t jealous of the OP. She is clearly much wealthier than me (or at least her husband is 😉) but I am very fortunate indeed- I work part-time and have no mortgage to pay. We are very lucky to be able to take a holiday every year, taking our caravan and our dog to Europe. I live in a beautiful part of the UK with beaches and hills on my doorstep.

That is more than enough for a good life for me and my family and I feel rich. I don’t want more. I don’t want handbags and shoes and jewellery and shopping malls and staff and sports cars and Z-list celebrities and influencers and private jets. I just want a peaceful life where I can make choices that do as little harm as possible to the planet and other humans. And that’s what I’ve got and I’m bloody grateful for it.

I always find it interesting that those who enjoy a blingy Dubai lifestyle seem incapable of understanding that not everyone is the same as them. We don’t all want the same things.

And honestly that sounds wonderful too.

I’m actually not here for the blingy lifestyle

All this thread has done is reinforce my first hand impression that Dubai is full of Brits of middling talent who just could not make it big in the private sector in the UK. They have to go to these places, with their enslaved/near enslaved brown/black servant class, to get the lifestyle they believe their mediocre talents deserve. Their lack of intelligence, critical thinking faculties and basic humanity is their greatest asset to regimes such as Dubai’s. Useful puppets all of them, propping up widespread corruption and human rights abuses.

Sorry getting lost going around in circles on the same posts here!

The children have fitted straight in, love their school, made many friends, thriving academically and just generally enjoying what Dubai has to offer.

We spend time in the UK so don’t feel so far removed and when the time is right we will move back, I don’t need to think and plan that far ahead right now.

We live in a community in a rental. Have no nanny or housemaid, not everyone has one!

Yes drones that made it to the land were intercepted as they were targeting military bases hence debris falling in some civilian areas. Airspace closed for a short time obviously

Conversations that don't feature in my life and I don't want to have to consider:

"I'm looking for a 3 bed rental property, nice schools, good area, low crime preferably somewhere I'm less likely to have to avoid falling shot down drones"

Yep. I'm sold on The Dubai Dream.

😂🙌

So much jealousy.

I don’t have a Chanel bag, I actually find them rather grotesque and every other person has one here….perhaps not even the real deal amongst half of them

What industry does your partner work in?
How does their working life compare with that in the UK with regards to pay, hours, expectations?

Move to bloody Devon with all your amazing wealth then!

Schnapps00 · 20/10/2026 14:54

Actually, not true sadly, £100-125k is an effective 60% tax 'death zone' as I call it, yes the loss of the personal allowance isn't technically a tax blah blah, but the effect is the same. It does drive people away from this country sometimes, especially given housing and childcare costs with a young family. With 2 in nursery in London, you'd have to earn £149k+ just to be better off than someone earning eg. £101k, which can't be right!

Like I said, Cliff edges. But it’s only on that bit of your pay, not all of it.

The West Country already has enough second home owners.
I would prefer she stay in Dubai.

That is great, it’s a shame it differs so vastly throughout the country and can’t be the same for all

I’m in the north, so probably one of the more deprived areas of the UK.

Also, I'd probably ask MN to get that post deleted. Just in case. You crossed a line there in admitting some stuff that the officials in Dubai would rather you didn't admit happened.

That post genuinely potentially puts you at risk of arrest.

You 'think'.

We don't have to think about this in the UK.

But you are Living the Dream.
