Then you’ll stick out like a sore thumb in the ex pat community-

  • They think that you think you’re morally superior and don’t fit in with them
  • They will gossip that you can’t afford help and don’t fit in with them

Everyone in the ex pat community uses help

Yes, a friend's daughter and family lived in Dubai for a few years and her mother told me once about how awful she felt about the maid who ran about putting slippers in place and doing the cooking and it wasn't possible to object, it would have been offensive. It is indeed the case that they would have been seen as sore thumbs and actually stopping 'local' people from getting jobs. In fact, many of those 'local' people are actually Philipino or similar.

I don’t have any gay friends

How would you know? Considering you approve of Dubai’s criminalisation of gay relationships because religion makes it all ok, then they’re hardly going to tell you, are they? I’d imagine you would make up one of the plethora of individuals they have to hide their sexuality from for fear of imprisonment.

Poor OP - she came on to answer questions about Dubai and has roundly been criticised and laughed at. I praise her and her family for having the gumption to try to make something of themselves and earn as much money as they can in a different country. I have been to Dubai on many occasions and love the place. Good for you, OP!

Of course this person knew what they were posting was controversial. Of course people are going to ask varied and pointed questions.
It's Dubai.
Also, I think he/she sounds very scathing and ill informed about the UK, so I'm going to challenge that. I'm personally not interested in what you can buy at the mall or how the Aircon works.

AtIusvue · 20/10/2026 12:20

britindubai · 20/10/2026 12:15

Sadly you are very misinformed

half of my friends have help and half don’t, we all get along

Then half of your friends cant afford help.

Many people have lived in Dubai, it’s not a special place. I stayed there multiple times and know multiple families out there.

You clearly don’t understand the social rules of the place and you’ve clearly already marked yourself as not being able to afford the lifestyle. The very fact that youre stating that you’ve moved out there to save cash:….shows that you don’t have the wealth to understand the lifestyle!!!! For crying out loud!

hedgeknight · 20/10/2026 12:20

britindubai · 20/10/2026 12:11

Absolutely yes and doesn’t need to be to the UK, plenty of other countries we can fly to if need be

The issue would be getting a plane outbound

Richard Tice was already complaining about a regular fight back yesterday, imagine it during conflict.

Yes, exactly.

The have zero idea of the social rules of the place and will have a big sign over their heads

Haha ok, I think you would weep a little if you saw my bank balance.

Wealthy people don’t keep their assets in the bank dear

You’re clearly a newbie to the region and you’ve shown yourself up as not understanding Dubai at all.

Anyone regardless of residency can use A&E.

I have enough money invested in the UK and have paid more in stamp duty, income tax than most probably earn in a lifetime

Yet you’re not working now? Seems pretty rum to me.

ME has been unstable for decades, I don’t think we will need any assistance

Respectfully, this thread is very clearly by someone who is poorly-educated, chronically geopolitically under-informed and has literally nothing of note to say about a country she’s supposedly lived in for a year.

Peoole have asked you serious questions. You don’t don’t know the answers, or you sidestep them. Others, including me, have asked questions about everyday stuff like hair loss and Sheikh Mo’s magic agelessness and alcohol scam/extortions or the rumour mill — you don’t seem to have anything to say about any of that, either. It’s hard not to conclude that you’re leading much the same life as you did on a housing estate in Milton Keynes, or Surbiton.

Op, no one else would weep if they saw your bank balance.

Can you really not see that most feel sorry for you choosing to live there?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 12:25

How easy will it be for you to return to your career in Dubai or elsewhere once your children are grown?
Do you pay into a pension?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 12:25

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 12:17

Does anyone live in it whilst you're away?

No it is kept only for us to reside in when we want to

But, but think of the money. Kerrching!

AtIusvue · 20/10/2026 12:27

The ex pat wives will all be gossiping that you clean your own home, you know that right?

It's a bit rich of you to refer to Britain's housing crisis when you own a home that nobody lives in for 10 plus months of the year.

You are part of the problem.

I don’t need to, I look after the children

Did you work in the U.K.?
if so, do you think you’ll be able to get your career back at the same level after 6 years away?

(Incidentally, on something you said in an earlier post - nobody has 50% of their income taken in tax in the U.K. I know cliff edges create some imbalances, but never to the point of 50%)

Is your partner able to take time off to return to the UK?
Do you get homesick?
Will you come home for Christmas?
