Don’t want my 16 year old here anymore.

Just that really had enough, the last 6 years have been hell, he’s disrespectful, rude, always threatens to put me on my ass, doesn’t listen to me, do as he is told, eats all the food and has no care about anyone else, he doesn’t go to school is home tutored twice a week. He has ADHD but I’m just done with it all, he refuses his meds, won’t go to his appointments, sleeps all day and is awake all night. I tried putting rules and boundaries in place and he constantly pushes them, he’s a bad influence on his siblings they are becoming like him and I’m a single mum and really struggling. He doesn’t go out, doesn’t want to do anything but play games all day every day, he spends money on my card for his games without my permission, I’ve had this for the last 6 years and I just can’t do it anymore, he is affecting my mental health and I’m constantly exhausted, he kicks off and smashes things, he tries to over power my parenting when I try and tell his siblings off or put rules in place. I don’t want him here anymore. What do I do? How do I get him out? I’m actually scared he’s going to hit me and then his siblings think it’s ok, he’s already attacked me before. I feel like I have to walk on egg shells. This isn’t a life.

Do not comment if you haven’t got anything nice to say. This isn’t even the half of what I’ve had to put up with the last 6 years!!

So you're kicking your 16 year old son out but you have a partner living with you?

SilverLining77 · 03/09/2026 08:50

Others may have already suggested it too - raise safeguarding concerns at your younger kids' school. It is abuse.

Lots of clueless and spiteful responses on here, sadly.

OP my DS has given me about 5-10% of what you are describing over the years. It's awful. I can't imagine how absolutely soul destroying this must be for you.

My son also definitely neurodiverse/ODD/shit father. He's now 21, since 16 has acted like he hates me, belittles me, won't engage with any positive suggestion/treatment but he is getting kicked out the next time he verbally abuses me for no reason. I have told him this - he acts like he doesn't care but I think actually the penny has dropped. Whatever, I actually no longer care. I did my best for him at every stage of his life and am not responsible for other people and his father's actions or lack of.

Lads like this need good fathers but for whatever reason they don't have them, so guess what, it's mum that gets all the anger they can't handle. They'll keep pushing and pushing because they can, it's just plain and simple bullying you and his siblings. They get a twisted sense of power from it. They just ramp it up if not given boundaries and how the hell can you set boundaries when he's bigger than you, with younger children in the house. Other posters fondly imagining he'll respond positively to reasonable discussion have absolutely no idea.

He has no right to do any of these assaults and other behaviours, and will now have to learn by getting arrested because you've already tried the other options. He will escalate, if not stopped.

He isn't going to wake up one morning and say "oh sorry mum for being an abusive little shit for the past 5 years. I will now change my attitude." What he will do is give you, and your other kids more and more problems till you end up all needing MH treatment, not just him.

All your kids are equally important. They all have the right to a peaceful life. He doesn't get to give you, and your other DC, lifelong mental traumas because he refuses to deal with his own. He's been offered ALL the help and simply has no reason to turn it down.

Thank you for this comment. It was needed!

Since when have I said I have a partner? Have you read the thread? Have you read my replies? I have been single for nearly 3 years. 🤣

You need an urgent review of the EHCP. Why is DS only receiving a couple of hours tuition a week? Are you appealing to EHCP?

When you say you begged for help from children’s services, what route did you take to challenge their decision to refuse to provide support? Did you complain, then ask for an independent review, then complain to the LGO? Depending on specifics, JR may be possible. Did you seek advice on whether your case was suitable for a pre-action letter. If DS has an EHCP, have you appealed the education side of things (and some social care provision is actually special educational provision) and asked SENDIST to also look at social care needs and social care provision, getting an independent social worker assessment if necessary? Knowing where you are up to will help with advice on knowing where to go next.

Won’t engage or can’t engage? It is likely to be the latter.

Even if DS can’t engage, have you had any indirect therapeutic support in order to help you help DS?

It’s so frustrating to read that this has been going on for 6 years!

A 10yo is way easier to control than a 16yo and if you had been given the right support at 10, you, him and his siblings would not have had to deal with this.
I’m sorry you have not had enough support, unfortunately it’s not the first time I’ve heard this.

Is he on medication?
Keep on at SS

But also try and talk to him about college.
Is he starting this September or next?
There are colleges that have accommodation and this gets paid if it’s a certain distance away from home and there are no courses closer by.

He’s getting his misogynistic views from the internet - the algorithm targets young boys and feeds them this crap.

He has ADHD and so his brain is all over the place, a shit dad, no friends and all he sees on SM are guys his age with big muscles and loads of money etc (all fake but he won’t know that) - his self esteem must be absolutely rock bottom.

It’s a vicious cycle because he has low self esteem/anxiety which makes him not leave the house - but then he spends more time on SM, feeling worse about himself and blaming everyone around him.

What does he look like physically?
Is he tall/short? Skinny/fat?

Does he have anything he’s excited about - GTA6?

He is doing another year of torturing due to being very behind, he is over weight as he binge eats all the time and steals food constantly, he has put on about 6 stone in the last 2 years. He won’t take his meds he won’t attend his appointments.

Op your other three children are not safe. You need to urgently get them out of h to e situation. Can they go and stay with their respective fathers or family of their fathers?

To be honest having more children with different men who walked out of family life, is bound to mess up a teenaged boy. He has grown up in chaos. Any child would struggle in these circumstances. You put him in this situation when you went on to have three more kids with another father, you can’t morally bail on him now.

Blackwidowsbite
I know exactly how you feel, I went through everything you are going through, my middle son was exactly the same as yours, he was taller than me at 15 and used to terrorise me and his little brother, someone called the police on him when he was holding a knife to my neck demanding money,
this was in front of his 2 year old brother, the police took him away and I got a call from social services asking if he could come back home, I said no and he was gone for a night but back home the next day, he did the same thing a few weeks later and I said that was it I wasn’t having it anymore,
he was put into bed and breakfast for 18 months until he turned 17, he was then given a council flat, I wish I could say it ended there but it didn’t, he used lots of different drugs which added to it all, mine is 36 now and his older and younger brothers both say he ruined their childhood, not surprisingly he is now in prison for a long time and deeply regrets everything he done but sadly it’s too late. I sincerely hope you can get your son sorted out before he starts down the path of drugs, there is hope for you other children, my other 2 are perfect in every way possible

This is what I have tried to avoid by putting up with it for so long, I don’t want him to go down that path and destroy his life but he seems to have plans of doing it as he doesn’t care and doesn’t want to work. He wants to sit at home all day playing games even has mentioned about getting ‘free’ money. I literally have no idea what else I can do, because it’s now affecting my other children and it’s not fair on them.

As gently as I can OP why is he being allowed access to devices and wifi? Until he can afford to feed himself and put a roof over his own head it is entirely your choice whether he has access to these things. They are not a right they are a privledge that he will earn when he is capable of doing the things he needs to in life and showing his caregivers some respect. Whatever his diagnosis society cannot function if the next generation think they're entitled to rot their brains with screens all day and everyone else pander to them and pussyfoot around them. The first thing I'd do is shut all screens off. It really is that simple.

SameOldMe · 03/09/2026 09:08

No advice but wanted to say I understand. My teenager threw her phone at me. Ended up in a&e needing stitches. Police were called and did nothing, social services referral who also did nothing. There doesn’t appear to be any support at all. If it was your partner you would leave, but when it’s your child you’re meant to just put up with it.

Miss888 · 03/09/2026 09:10

Blackwidowsbite · 02/09/2026 23:51

He has if there is such a thing severe challenging behaviour. He literally doesn’t like rules, boundaries or being told no. He will smash things, shout, get abusive and threatening if he doesn’t get what he wants or is told no.

Call the Police next time. I mean it

You put him in this situation when you went on to have three more kids with another father, you can’t morally bail on him now.

Before you comment on the situation there is more to it than you think. So let me break it down for you as you seem to be on the band wagon of me allowing chaos in my home……..

I got with his father when I was 16 first love and first boyfriend we was together for 3 years I fell pregnant at 18 was even on the pill, we split up because he was absolutely horrendous and wanted different things to me he wanted to party, drink with mates and at the time I didn’t know take drugs. I left him also at the time I was suffering with post natal depression which I didn’t know at the time and was struggling to cope, I had no support from friends or family and didn’t have a clue how to get support.

The other boys dad, we was together for over 8 years, we got married and 6 months later he cheated on me and left me for another woman. This was during Covid and I think this is where it’s gone downhill because since then nothing has been the same, I struggled to be a mum while dealing with the kids emotions on the circumstances as well as my own mental health and emotions of my husband cheating on me.

My daughters dad the typical narcissist, I was vulnerable I met him a year and half after I split up with my husband I was going through a divorce and he latched on to that and bam controlling, manipulating, love bombing you name it he did it, i didn’t even know what a narcissistic was until i met him, I took the morning after pill on a oopsy moment and still fell pregnant. I went for a termination 3 times but just couldn’t do it, it took me 4 months to come to terms with having another child because I didn’t want anymore. I kept her and I don’t regret it. All I regret is who I had her with but life is a massive learning curve. We make mistakes.

Yes you can say my life choices haven’t been good but it is what it is now, I have been single for nearly three years and do not plan on being with anyone else for a long time. Your comment is extremely narrow minded and judgemental and until you know the full extent on someone’s circumstances and how they got to where they are do not comment on it. I didn’t think when I was a young girl I want to have children and become a single mum and do it alone, I wanted what the majority of young girls want a settled life a family marriage etc but unfortunately for me that didn’t happen which has also taken a lot to swallow. My son has been this way for a long time, there is no excuse for this kind of behaviour everyone goes through things in life doesn’t mean you need to be and act this way, you know right from wrong, god if I acted this way because of how my childhood was which by the way wasn't the best I should either be in prison on drugs and swigging back white lightening in the streets but I’m not? The shit I witnessed as kid doesn’t make me act out and be a complete asshole to anyone and everyone because it’s not an excuse to act or treat people like shit.

I have said this to him, I have time limits where my WiFi will automatically go down, I’m getting locks put on my kitchen door tomorrow too because I’m concerned about his weight and his compulsive binge eating. I’ve cancelled his payment for his phone too after last night.

Too many people here speak only from their own limited life experience and project how they feel about their own little darlings who do not behave in this terrible way and then criticise someone who is going through a hell they will never experience.

Ignore them.

I am a retired nurse and social worker. I have worked in community teams dealing with children and adults with learning disabilities, many of whom had extremely challenging behaviour.

My advice is this:

Find out the name of the head of child services in your area and write a letter to them making it very clear that you fear for your own safety, the safety of your other children and for your son’s mental and physical health.

Give examples of his aggression towards you, the theft, the vandalism, the influence on the younger children and the effect on the overall household.

Describe the effect on your health and the health of your younger children.

Describe how he interferes with and undermines your parenting of the younger children and the effect of this on their behaviour.

Specify your complete lack of support and isolation.

Point out that you are being left to deal with a young person who, if in any type of supported care, would be assessed as needing an entire team and quite possibly a 2:1 staffing ratio.

Describe how your son refuses help in the community such as CAHMS leading to them abandoning him and that he refuses to attend school.

Point out that at age 16 he is fast approaching adulthood and you, as a single woman with younger children, are being bullied, threatened, assaulted and effectively held hostage in your own home by this young man.

Tell them that after years of asking for help and getting nowhere they are now personally on notice that this is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Tell them that although you love your son you also fear him and you fear for your younger children and because of this you cannot continue to have your son living in your home.

After finding out other relevant names copy this letter to the chief constable of your area, the head of education, the head of CAHMS, your GP and your MP.

If you can possibly afford it, send all letters by registered post so they have to be signed for.

Also contact your nearest women’s refuge and speak to them about your fears for your safety. You won’t be the first woman to contact them who is frightened of a teenage son and they might be able to add some weight to wake up local services to your situation.

My mother had a breakdown when I was 16. She threw me and my siblings out and my grandparent took me to the council and made me sit in the housing office until they did something. They housed me in a hostel that night. It’s horrific and still to this day I’m recovering from abuse and things I witnessed. Although none of this way my doing, your son seems to be extremely difficult to handle.
if you did take him to the local council with his age he’d be assigned a social worker which may help! Unfortunately social services didn’t see it as their responsibility to home me as I was 16.
good luck op it sounds an awful position for you x

That was your second mistake. Your first was having a kid with such a prince among men. But that's easy to see in hindsight, harder to see beforehand.

Alongside arranging for fostering, get CMS claims started for all your kids. If you're going to walk on eggshells in your own home whilst you raise the kids without any practical help from their sperm donors, at least you can get some money from said sperm donors towards raising their kids.

Have you actually ever dealt with CMS personally?! They're useless. By far the worst people I have ever dealt with and that was WITH the exact address, work and bank details of my sons dad.

Every month they write off thousands of pounds that father's owe and the mothers just have to deal with it. It is not the shining light of help people seem to think it is. At one point I was offered £9.66 a week. Now he lives in America re married there is nothing I can do at all. They allow him to pay nothing despite earning a 6 figure salary because they 'won't intervene abroad'

rainbowstardrops · 03/09/2026 09:41

I have no words of wisdom @Blackwidowsbitebut just wanted to say that I really hope you, your son and your other children get the support that you all clearly need and deserve. It sounds so incredibly difficult Flowers

HollyhocksandPeons · 03/09/2026 09:49

Such a shame the UK does not have government-run military-style boot camps for behavioural correction! It would have done the work of 20 psychologists fawning over mental health.
I keep posting the same thing - but a few years back there was a post of a woman with a foreign mother who, over summer holidays, corrected the behaviour of her sadistically-minded son, once and for all, with very corporal methods. So I shall add what a shame we do not all have grandparents in non-sissy jurisdictions where they use traditional methods for behavioural adjustments.

I have experience of working in youth services and youth supported housing. It's not ideal but it can be done, you just need to advise SS that after a certain date, he can no longer live at home and they will need to house him. Every young person I encountered in these places had issues and I felt very sorry for them and sad but I was younger and child free back then and I had no idea what had led to them going there. One mum came into where I worked with her 16 year old son and said 'I can't cope anymore, I'm kicking him out'. I remember being disgusted and really judging her but she must have been at her wits end.
My almost 14 year old DD is giving me some relatively normal teenage attitude and even that is hard at times, I can't imagine what you're dealing with. I'm sorry.

Have you told SS that your children sre living in s home where DV is taking place? That they are witnessing and experiencing violence?
