My mum wants a low effort relationship with me. She always has. She never wanted children but dad did. As a child I was very rejected as she chose to be by herself over being with me. Never ever played with us. My dad was away alot earning.
She's very transactional, won't offer to give you a lift, won't ask for a lift.
She has no interest in doing any favours that inconvenience her such as lending me a blanket for my sofa while I stage my home for sale.
She made it clear she wants no responsibility for grandchildren. She has never looked after my niece's and nephews alone.
She calls 'supporting us' as having a coffee out with us at her own convenience and wants light hearted conversation only.
She never protected us, and ultimately put her needs first. Spending time with her as a teen was a negotiation. She will take you out for coffee as long as you don't bother her the rest of the week.
She's admitted she wasn't a very hands on mum, but blames my dad for being away working and leaving it all on her. She says if she did it over again she would leave my dad and be more hands on.
I am TTC and she is the only family in my city. How much I would love for her to be there to take care of me like my friends mums have when they had babies.
I feel like this is her opportunity to practice what she's been preaching. If she had her time again she will be more hands on.
Of course this isn't going to be the case. But I feel robbed of a mum in childhood and I feel I will need one soon more than ever. She's told me to back off bringing it up and she's pulling away from me as she has no interest in being my servant.
I said I don't want a servant just normal mum support when you have a child. An emergency contact who will be there, even someone who will be there in really tough moments, someone who takes an interest, wants to be involved, wants to know their grandchild.
I know this may seem entitled. How do I let go of this unrealistic expectation? My mum is also healing from a trauma and has been in a bad way mentally for my whole life.
