Feel like I’m going insane - it’s a dog one sorry

I feel like I am going insane trying to explain why the health of me and DH, and the wellbeing of our children is more important than SIL + her husband bringing their dog along to family events which is essentially just a treat for them.

DH and I are both allergic, our 3yo is also seeming like they are going to be allergic and is frightened of the dog, and I’m pregnant again.

Despite saying very clearly that the dog is not welcome in our home, and that if the dog is present at other family events we will not be attending unless the event is outside and dog is on a lead at all times, we are still being asked to work towards full inclusion of the dog at all times, as if we can just learn to get over our allergies! In hindsight we should have kept the hard line that we just wouldn’t have anything to do with the dog but we were getting pressure from other family members to compromise.

I am being bombarded with messages about it every time it’s someone’s birthday. DH ignores it and tells me to do the same - but they message me BECAUSE he ignores it.

The latest update is that if they have to compromise around their dog’s access to family events then we should have to compromise around our children’s access to family events!

Just don't go if the dog is there, and stick to it.
Once you show you are sticking to it, they will stop asking. If they ask, say 'you already know we won't be there is the dog is' .

Stressymcstress · 20/07/2026 19:54

Are The rest of the family aware of this? Surely grandparents / aunties and uncles value your children over a f*cking dog?

stick to your boundaries, “it’s us or the dog”. If the dog is at an event then tell the host the dog needs to leave/ be kept in a spare room etc, or you will leave with DH and 3yo.

palepeony · 20/07/2026 19:55

We too have allergies in the family. When we know that my DH and children will be exposed to a dog or cat, actually many animals, everyone takes antihistamines. Not ideal but a compromise.

I think we’ll have to. At the moment it hasn’t come to “we’re bringing the dog tough shit” because we have said we won’t go and someone else has got involved so it doesn’t happen. But it’s exhausting having to have the argument first and I quite frankly do not have the energy.

Broken record; we are allergic to the dog. This is not within our control. If the dog attends, we can't. Your choice.
Every. Fucking. Time. How dare they. I'm not surprised you feel like you're going mad. They're either cruel or rather stupid or they just don't care or all of it. So really, awful as it is, they're no real loss.

Firstly I don’t see why we should have to do that every time and secondly they don’t touch the sides. When they first got the dog we attempted an indoor event and I took a quadruple dose. It barely touched the slides and I was wheezing for three days afterwards.

Yes it is well known! I think basically SIL is very bullish so it would be easier for everyone if we gave in and got on with it

You don’t have to go. The choice is yours.

No I know that and we don’t it’s just really disappointing that no one else feels like they can stick up for us

If everyone knows then it’ll not come as a surprise (hopefully) if you start leaving events when the dog is there. You shouldn’t be expected to medicate your child (or yourself) every time you see family either.

The need for dogs to be included in everything is ridiculous.

Win bloody win that these fools aren't around your dc ..

TotallyTangerineGeum · 20/07/2026 20:05

What breed is the dog? Some breeds are hypoallergenic AND don’t shed fur. Miniature schnauzers for one

There’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. It’s not just the fur it’s the skin cells and saliva. Dog saliva literally makes me come out in hives.

But anyway it’s a Labrador which is one of the worst.

Perhaps they all vegans and you called them fussy?

Be more bullish. You are right after all and she's being a selfish dick. Do like your DH says and ignore. So what if they bug you about it? They're idiots. Absolutely no reason you should suck it up and suck it. It's a dog. You are family. 'Us or the dog' on repeat, no grey area.

Balloonhearts · 20/07/2026 20:12

You're allergic! Are they fucking stupid?

There are lots of hypoallergenic breeds which can be around those with allergies. My Schnauzer doesn’t set off my allergic friend and she can cuddle or stroke him and nothing! Not a single strand of fur either!

Okay but I don’t see how that’s relevant as a) this is a Labrador and b) it sounds like my allergies are more severe than your friends. I repeat, there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic breed.

In any case we are both allergic to this dog so it doesn’t matter

OP has explained that it's not just fur! She is correct there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog and any breeder that sells a dog claiming that shouldn't be allowed to breed.

V scientific, I don't think! Your Schnauzer has FA to do with the matter at hand.

Have you ever seen a real serious allergic reaction? Like, anaphylaxis level serious? Because it's terrifying.

Allergies aren't a joke, they're not always mild like hay-fever. they close up your airways and it doesn't stop when the allergen is removed. Anaphylactic shock kills people. Allergies kill people.

Why is a severe allergy dramatic???

if she’s allergic she’s allergic and it’s not worth risking her throat closing up for a dog.

such a shame that the family aren’t supporting you OP. I think that’s really selfish. As others have said - agree on a response and keep repeating and not attending events. What happens if you invite them to you - surely they don’t bring the dog?

They tried once, were mortally offended when we said no. It caused a huge argument. They haven’t tried since but things have taken an uptick in recent months so I don’t think they won’t try it again. We had about a year where they stopped bringing it to stuff and stopped asking and now it seems they have got bored of that and have started again.
