The press are reporting on this story in a very restrained way. I have a feeling something big and nasty is brewing. Meghan should not have prematurely released a self serving statement. If she thought her father was a child abuser to the extent she cut contact, she should, as a member of the royal family, have been asking questions and ensuring an investigation proceeded and the queen/king/palace machine should have been informed. At first I thought this was just more Markle drama but now I’m unsure. This is potentially a scandal that exceeds Andrew.

I agree, the reporting is very restrained. This might be because of the sensitive subject matter and the fact M is, like it or not, a member of the Royal family. It might also be because their lawyers are cautioning them that Thomas Markle Snr is only facing allegations at this stage, which he's denying, and he hasn't been found guilty of anything.

M's statement now makes him seem as guilty as hell. I imagine her lawyers are keen that the Met finds the letter soon, for proof. I'm surprised she didn't ask for a copy.

All the pundits are falling to the new reality now Mail + Amanda Platell

AMANDA PLATELL: Is this the moment we should all feel sorry for Meghan? I have been among her harshest critics... but she may have been harbouring a deeply disturbing secret all along

How devastating for the Sussexes after their return to Blighty.
Meghan is greeted with headlines that her father, Thomas Markle, is being investigated over ‘sickening child sex abuse images’.
Her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jnr, claimed he discovered the stash at his father’s Philippines home and handed it to police.
Is this the moment we should actually feel sorry for Meghan?
Could it be that the ‘devoted’ Dad who raised her after her mother left, had a darker side?
And could this explain why she dropped him and refused to let him see her children? Had she, while being pilloried as a cruel uncaring daughter, been harbouring a deeply disturbing secret – that her father was a paedophile?
Certainly, her statement yesterday implied as much. She said: ‘In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me. It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father.’ She added that this explained her decision not to allow Markle to have any contact with Archie and Lilibet. It was, she said, ‘to protect them’.

Crikey, this extraordinary news raises so many more questions than answers. We know Markle is under investigation in the Philippines and the FBI is considering taking action. We know, too, that he is protesting his innocence.
What an unholy mess, and what an awful moment for the Sussexes as they try to relaunch themselves in Britain.
I have been among their harshest critics and yes, I have accused them – perhaps wrongly with the benefit of hindsight – of abandoning Meghan’s father.
Right now, I feel sorry for them, although given the new family turmoil, none of us should rule out another Netflix series.

Interesting that this has made you feel this way and I suspect that was the very aim of the release of this story and these allegations.

The Sun's deputy editior in her mea culpa about Meghan says a lot worse is going to come out but it's not her place to reveal it, yet.

Your assertion smells true - the regular meetings with her Private Secretary would surely hint and suggest with plenty of Maams what the private office wanted to convey. A lot are ex military and /or FCDO who will want security readouts and general info on what is going on at the Palace and digest it as they feel fit. A raised eyebrow and a hint can do a lot of heavy lifting.

I refer you to my link about how the monarchy works.
It's not a Bond movie. Oh, and Camilla isn't in charge of MI5 or whatever other bonkers claims have been on here. Plus there is no "vigilante movement".
I think imaginations are running riot!

The Private Secretary’s job is to know everything, anticipate every eventuality, and war-game potential scenarios to head off problems before they threaten the monarchy or the institution itself. These are exceptionally senior figures, with a lifetime of experience forged in the military or the Foreign Office. Their job is to know what might happen, what could go wrong, and how best to manage it. Whether they can actually control the outcome is an entirely different matter.

I genuinely thought he’d died, earlier this year. Obviously not!

He passed away in the Berenstein Bears universe that we originated from. As you may already be aware, the Berenstein Bears universe merged with the Berenstain Bears universe, causing some historical events to become altered.

The Mail possibly have questions to answer about how they have given Thomas Markle a voice, money, sat by his side while he whined about being denied access to his grandchildren if the rumours about him were known in 2018.

Who has sad the Mail knew in 2018?

Camilla would probably be quite good if she was in charge of MI5. After all she is very discreet.

Those 3 O'Levels would come in useful against these entrenched Cambridge types.Apologies I got it wrong;

Queen's Gate School, London — she attended this independent girls' school and reportedly left with one O-level, aged 16.

They probably did not know - but they still look like idiots for making such a big deal out her cutting ties with her father. A of which was none of their business and they did deliberately as a way to get at her. Now who has egg on them...

Funny how she's clever enough to run a "vigilante group" with some journalist, eh?

As you say, they were rumours in 2018. Not allegations that warranted an investigation, just rumours. I'm not defending TMS in the slightest but he's being branded the very worst of criminals in the court of public opinion and we only have his dodgy son's word for what was found in those boxes that TMS hadn't had access to for two years.

My point such as it was was to how the machine works in practice and aimed at assertions that ascribing magical powers to the Monarchy is just that. They are not magical but institutional and the incumbents per se doesn’t need to know how they operate just that they are there and they operate to preserve and advance the institution. The grey men in suits as it were.

People in her circles have more important things to think about than 'o' levels. Like catching a rich husband. But I do believe Camilla was the one with the money. She apparently inherited £0.5m in her early twenties. Which was a fair bit of money then. Nice.

Bond St art galleries serve the same purpose - full of posh gels who know the customers that can afford eye watering amounts for art are a good catch.

This is the one time that Meghan needed to stay quiet, instead she's had her PR race off to the media with an "I knew" statement and I have a feeling that this is going to massively backfire on her...

I am, as ever, very far behind events.

Could this be the 'one thing' the Harolds didn't want coming out or is that something to do with Angela Kelly's rumoured book?

It's all so convoluted and tawdry 😶

Yes I agree it's not been handled well she could have said less as a holding statement that would have invited less speculation but she might have been blinded by her half bother in the Sun and felt she had to say something.

when have Met denied the statement? Its not on BBC! Link please.

They have confirmed they are looking for the letter, but they are not and never have investigated Thomas Markle.

A spokesman from the Met has subsequently told GB News: "We are aware of media reports that officers from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in the passing on of a letter in 2018.

"We are undertaking enquiries internally in an effort to confirm this."

GB News understands the Met Police has not and is not currently investigating Thomas Markle Sr.

Agree. If they didn't know what was going on under their nose then they should have known. Either they knew and did nothing or they were grossly incompetent. The Queen got away with a lot. It's only when something happens overseas ( eg Panama Papers and now the Senate release of the Epstein files) that we find out what they are up to. Yet in the UK no one knows anything? Not Royal Protection Officers, not private secretaries, not Parliament? Its not plausible.

You have to laugh at the posters on their forum one minute washed should of said it back in 2018, now its she shoukd of stayed quiet why did she run off the media and make a statement today. Meanwhile also making comments saying how much did she know questions need to be asked 😆 crazy
