What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

Lots of people will tick it without realising what they are cutting out and they will never be in trending. It feels like a very unfair consequence of an ill thought out idea.

MN aren't removing long running threads from Active. They are giving us the option of doing so if we only want very recent threads to appear.
I haven't ticked that box as threads following eg weekly TV programmes can cover months

Shock @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet Our weather threads often span more than 30 days. For instance www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4626193-winter-weather-outlook was started at the beginning of September. They tend to be slow burn threads until weather gets interesting, but now, even if it snows buckets and we all get snowed in, according to your new algorithm it would never be in trending and for some would never be in active. Sad

Unintended consequences and all that.

Hi everyone - thanks again for all your feedback. We're dropping in with a quick update.

The following changes have now been made and released:

  • the Similar Threads box is below the posting box for logged in users
  • only threads created within the last 30 days will appear in Trending
  • there are two new settings in Talk Settings - one to remove the Similar Threads box and a second to prevent threads more than 30 days old from appearing in Active.
We'll continue to monitor results and usage and improve things as we go along.

@JustineMumsnet We'll will also introduce two new setting in Customise
One to turn off seeing Similar Threads at all and one which ensures you only see threads in Active that have been started within the last 30 days. We're aiming to release both of these changes in the next week or so. Thanks for your input and for your patience.

Is that before or after the Edit Function which you said was under development and on its way last year...?

Sorry I think I put this on the worng thread... Yes, some good steps on the readers' side.

But there is still no "opt out" (or opt in) for contributors who didn't know that their long forgotten posts would be pushed at other readers months or even years after the fact.

And also need a good way to manage "the right to be forgotten" for contributors from now on. Mitigation might be to offer a "30 days" option on all new posts or a "30 days after it all goes quiet" option on all new threads. Or a "keep out of the recommender" option, which could be ticked when you start a thread or post a message, or maybe retroactively if the person who started the thread or made the post has second thoughts?

Thank you for the option to remove it. It doesn’t help the crass and insensitive matches it’s throwing up for other people but appreciate the element of choice being added for some users.
