Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Still keep getting this black advert glitch cropping up. Totally random, no way of detailing what I do to make it happen.

Am posting in sound bites as screen keeps refreshing and losing something lengthy that I’ve typed.

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:04

Am hating the way the screen constantly refreshes - shoving you back to the top of the page.

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:03

Still REALLY annoying that, when clicking on notifications, you get taken to the first page of the thread (rather than the last post that you’ve read)

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:18

Cookie consent pop up now gone so clearing cookies seems to have worked after all. Thought it hadn’t as had to log back in after clearing and it still kept appearing but suddenly now I can click on a new page without the pop up popping up!

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:08

And the cookies consent pops up after posting too.

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:07

Still having to consent to cookies on every page despite having cleared all cookies from my browser. So annoying!

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 21/05/2022 21:20

@JustineMumsnet Please don't disappear for days at a time again, or at least have someone else from HQ take over if you do.

HellyR · 21/05/2022 13:36

Yes, deleted threads don't show up in "threads I'm watching" etc so no-one can see deletion messages (unless they have the url of the thread saved, presumably? )
Could this be fixed please otherwise we'll get endless "where did that thread go? " threads.

Johnnysgirl · 21/05/2022 13:02

VestofAbsurdity · 21/05/2022 12:57

When threads are deleted they used to show up in 'Threads I'm On' with the deletion message, that doesn't seem to be the case now, why not MNHQ?

Yes, I noticed that this morning. Seems a bit stupid for it to be by deliberate design.
I'd be pushing for a complete refund at the point, had I invested heavily in this redesign. But I suspect there really wasn't huge investment made, and it shows.

Sorry if I missed this but what's going on with the local talk? Random order of old threads and I can't find a way to see anything recent.

I use the website.

If you use it on your phone, you can't not have noticed the changes.

On a laptop / desktop, I think the site broadly works, but with some annoyances, around ads, extra space, brightness, the issue with PMs, and others.

But huge numbers of users are more than inconvenienced by the upgrade. Poster after poster has described the accessibility issues which cannot have been missed to this extent, if they really did such thorough testing.

Last week the quote function & paragraph spacing stopped working on the app. For most of a week. That affected everyone who used the app, not only some, and made it unusable.

SirChenjins · 21/05/2022 09:25

The first point is what I see on my laptop using Chrome

The issues here are huge - they affect the very functionality of the site, on all platforms, and mean many users can't use it at all.

Except they're not affecting all of us. Seriously, apart from the search issue, I'm having NONE of the issues mentioned by other people using the exact same platforms (android and chrome, and laptop and chrome) that I am.

I really don't understand this at all. I'm not being smug, I'm not saying that other people are lying. I'm simply saying that the site is working for me, and I've has no issues at all since the first day. Which must point to something incredibly odd going on, and I can understand why the people who are running this place must be tearing their hair out. There's no rhyme or reason to some of this stuff.

You’re not seeing a page consisting mainly of empty grey space with a narrow text box limiting the view of the posts to about 3? Or the auto capital issue? Or have to scroll endlessly on your phone to see the posts? Confused

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 08:28

I ended up clearing all cookies from my phone browser (Safari) this morning which does seem to have stopped the endless cookie acceptance messages.

Are you using the app or website?

The app (until the quote function issue), after the initial few days, has worked, bar certain problems which were there before.

The website design is different for every platform. Eg the brightness, the large ad spaces, the functionality of the mobile browser - you might not mind it, but it is different & the functionality has changed

There are then in addition a range of other problems which are platform-dependent and might not affect you.

I use the website.

@JustineMumsnet @JustineMumsnet I've got PM notifications, I think they might be actual PMs but I can't see them. I was waiting on replies from people. On desktop Chrome, laptop. Can't screenshot.

Seeingadistance · 20/05/2022 19:19

I don't know what was the problem with the old set-up! Ok, maybe it looked "old-fashioned" but this new set-up doesn't look much different to me. The huge difference is that the old set-up worked fine, and this new set-up is simply crap! Problems which have been raised time and again since the change are still problems, and loads of good things have been lost and seemingly won't be coming back!

Did you pay for this shitstorm?

EarringsandLipstick · 20/05/2022 19:15

the whole point of beta testing is that you test all the combinations of devices and browsers, and recruit (and pay) people to do so - many people here are involved in software testing at some level, and know how it works. These issues could not all have been missed! They are not minor glitches, but massive errors!

That's it exactly.

Justine is correct that on any new platform there will be some unexpected behaviour. These will be minor issues, if the work has been done correctly.

The issues here are huge - they affect the very functionality of the site, on all platforms, and mean many users can't use it at all.

Not minor and simply not believable that structured, paid, planned testing happened & didn't pick up even some of these major issues.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/05/2022 19:12

Either way, the hundreds of testers obviously missed a shedload of issues, both major and minor. How did that happen? And why wasn’t the legacy site made available to allow you to take down this one and work on it

Excellent point.

JustineMumsnet · 20/05/2022 17:41

We are certainly reading and have changed some things already in response to feedback and will continue to do so. Some issues are not universal however so we need to research them and find out in what instances they're occurring in order to be able to fix.

But most of these accessibility issues are universal, occur on desktop devices, and have been mentioned multiple times since day 1. And you've specifically just asked for ideas about accessibility, when we've already given you many many ideas

We did multiple rounds of beta testing with hundreds of users - which raised lots of things which we adjusted prior to launch. Sadly it's nye on impossible to catch every single scenario in testing because we have millions of users with 100s of different browser and device combinations. This was a rebuild of an entire platform with many, many different features and variations built up over 20 years. Ideally we'd have no issues for anyone of course but in the scheme of it it's not surprising there are some. But we will sort them.

@JustineMumsnet I put a post up shortly after the launch asking if anyone had tested this new site and quite a few people said they hadn’t continued with the testing because it was too involved, or they fed back the same comments that we’re all highlighting now - and iirc the issue of (non) payment for testing was highlighted so some said it wasn’t worth their while.

Either way, the hundreds of testers obviously missed a shedload of issues, both major and minor. How did that happen? And why wasn’t the legacy site made available to allow you to take down this one and work on it Confused
