Why are so many of you against a "like" option?

No it doesn’t stop people seeing your post. You will be lower down as far as I’m aware and I’m a regular user.

The up/downvoting on reddit is used for malicious purposes though. So although it may not stop all conversation, it doesn't make it a very pleasant place to be sometimes.

Nah Reddit isn’t too bad. You don’t make people invisible with dislikes but they are generally lower down but to be honest it’s not too bad and sorting by controversial can be fun. Point is, having an upvote and downvote system doesn’t stop conversation like many on here seem to think. I’ve had some of my best debates on there. And unlike on mumsnet you don’t have to go through the same comments for multiple pages before getting to something new.

Lol. No. Reddit sounds like a nightmare. Can’t you make people invisible by disliking stuff.

Having a like or agreed button would not stop the conversation lol. Have some of you never used other sites? Reddit for example, an upvote and downvote button, plenty of conversation though and many are in depth and well thought out.

Chatting amongst ourselves make the best threads imo .

That's a good point. The 'Like button' people can leave the people that want to have a discussion to it.

I used to be against it but I find myself coming round to the idea.

I don't post much these days. I've always been more of a reader than a poster anyway, and nowadays I find myself using the quote function to agree with someone more and more often. I think the like button serves the same purpose?

Because it's mindless and transactional and it makes people post in order to get 'likes'.

I don’t think it would put people off commenting. I’ve seen enough facebook group sites where posters ‘like’ and still have a go at some one they disagree with

I'm not alone in quoting. and then just agreeing, or disagreeing, with comments.

There are no guidelines saying that it's against the rules. ☺️

And it's irritating enough to see people say, 'what MrsTerry said' when BIWI said it before but was ignored. Well known posters would get likes when other newer posters, or less prolific, said it earlier and better.

I think it's difficult to ignore it if it's there, and it may encourage nastiness by people liking mean comments. MN is for support, not for individual validation.
